"The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die'. The lyric passages 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit' and 'why have you forsaken me?' are a reference to Jesus' death on the cross, as, according to the Gospels, it was one of the seven things Jesus said while dying."

The song’s original name was “Self-Righteous Suicide” but the label company didn’t like the word “suicide” in the title... so the bad decided to chop the word “suicide” in half (sui) ... hence Chop Suey

Yes!!! I´m a simple man, I see SOAD I click! One of the greatest metal songs in the last decades! Absolute masterpiece! As for the band they are not really religious but they do adress a lot the influence religion had, has and will have in the shaping of our world.
The song was meant to be called " Self-Righteous Suicide" but the recording company was not okay with it, so they made like a word play on it: "Self-right-Chop Suey-cide" and hence the final "Chop Suey". In the album, at the very begining of the track you can actually hear a comment from the record sessions where it says "rolling suicide" before the track starts.
The meaning is a take on how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone dies but sometimes people say they deserved it based on the personal view or knowledge you have on that person. In an interview they gave the example of a drug addict: If someone dies from drug abuse, people might say they deserved it because of the abuse of dangerous drugs. Hence the line, "I cry when angels deserve to die."
Really good stuff, now go for "Toxicity" or their perfect deep meaning and beatifully constructed gem "Aerials". Peace.

He’s talking about Christ’s “ Self-righteous suicide” -there’s an old saying that every time someone committed suicide an angel died.
That’s why he says “ trust in my self-righteous suicide” and then says “ Father why have you forsaken me?” - Christ’s last words on the cross to His Father.

I’m three years late of course, but seeing these two react to BOOM! by SOAD would be incredible! It’s so sadly relevant today, but as mentioned, they’re doing a LOT for their country and even other anti war movements.
‘4000 hungry children leave us per hour from starvation, while millions are spent on bombs, creating death showers.’
So sad. And they show all the faces which makes it so much sadder.

Song basically about we all die the way we deserve to die. At least that’s how people view it. If I were a drug addict and died from an overdose people would say that’s the way I deserved to die. How you would be known after death. “I cry when angels deserve to die”.

The whole song is about the crucifixion, referencing multiple things Christ said on the cross. Things like "self righteous suicide" and "angels deserve to die" also fit that. Beyond that, it's a mirror; you can make it about anything you want.

This is about drug addiction, but it doesn't have the somber tone that many songs about addiction have. The band describes it as "a little quacky." The song can also be interpreted to be about how society views death or about Christ.
Chop Suey is a Chinese stew made with meat or fish, plus bamboo sprouts, onions, rice and water chestnuts. They used it for the name of the song because it describes their musical style, with lots of stuff thrown together. The title is not in the lyrics. >>
The original name of the song was "Suicide," but Columbia Records made them change it to make it radio friendly. In the beginning of the song, you hear Serj say "we're rolling suicide." The title is a bit of a play on words - "Suey-cide

System of a down is a band of Armenian descent and made their songs about the Armenian genocide that happened in 1915 when the Turks slaughtered over 1.5 million people. No one really talks about it because World War I was happening, and the media didn't focus on that. All the songs are all about getting recognition. It is an important ambition for them, the Armenian population, and the diaspora to gain world recognition, especially in the United States because its a super power.
"Wake up, Grab a brush and put a little makeup" is referring to the turkish government and how their crimes are so obvious, yet they're trying to cover it up, hence the reference to the makeup. System of a down is also making a reference to them being young girls and running away from their problems, not facing the truth of what they did.
"Why'd you leave the keys up on the table" is referring to the Armenian people not being able to have what is theirs, the homeland. Eastern Turkey is Western Armenia. The "key" was left in the house not letting them inside. All their churches lay in ruin to this day. Its Armenia's belongings.
"Here you go create another fable" is once again in reference to the Turkish Government making up stories about the genocide. They say that Armenians killed their people. Yet they also said no such genocide occurred. System of a Down is basically saying "Wake Up" and realize what your doing and saying.
"In my, self righteous suicide" does not literally mean that they think suicide is justifiable, but that the turks make it seem like the Armenians killed themselves and their own people for attention. They say "I cry when angels deserve to die" because how could the Armenians, a nation that did nothing wrong (the angels), be killed in such an awful way for no reason? Essentially, this line is sarcasm for the Ottoman Empire's foolish actions.
"Father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me" Although this line is an allusion to Jesus before he died, this line is speaking for the Armenian people as a whole. During the time of the genocide many Armenians lost their faith in God. They thought to themselves, if God was with us, he wouldn't let something so tragic happen to our people. So they're asking "why have you abandoned us father?"
Now tell me, doesn't this song make a lot more sense now?

Some late... but here is my comment. The song is about how society unfairly judges those who die from suicide or a drug overdose. "I cry when angels deserve to die" is basically saying I cry when good people die from bad habits. In the verse "grab a brush and put a little make up" is pointing out that people with depression put on a 'mask' and hide it because of how they will be judged. "Why'd you leave the keys up on the table" is inferring that if you're going to commit suicide you won't need the keys to get back in.... finally, those final words "father in oru hands I commend my spirit..." are the same that Jesus christ says in the cross before die... great reaction!!
