I've got to be honest here, I've been bashing my head for a last couple of weeks understanding AD, you analogy and simple explanation has finally led me to a peaceful sleep.
I looked into this video 10 days ago and today I attended a L3 Job role for windows administration and when I explained the LDAP syntax on a paper in the same way as is.. they didnt even ask another question further on AD. :) Thanks much for the video #itfreetraining.
better than any other training videos on youtube, or other training videos on sale. number 1 sign is, I don't get sleepy which is very essential in watching training videos. if you're awake, you can absorb everything the speaker says. especially if the speaker is as good as this.
i cant think of a better way to explain how hard it was for me to understand what ldap was. people like you give us a reason to give back to the internet when we can. thank yu
Thanks very much. Good to hear you like the training. We have started releasing Windows Server 2012. You can find them on the web site under free course. We will get the rest done as soon as possible.
The 70-640 exam does count toward some of the MCITP. You need to check which certification that you want to do to see if you will credit for completing the 70-640 exam.
I see. When you add Active Directory Domain Services and promote the server to a Domain Controller this configures Ldap on the server. Ldap is the protocol that Active Directory uses to communicate, so you will not see a role in particular that is called Ldap.
How are you determining that LDAP in not working? If you have a look in DNS you should be able to find the LDAP service records. One should be created for each Domain Controller.
@trismarck 1. c:\windows\NTDS tds.dit. 2. Each domain has it's own database or seperate NTDS.dit file which is replicated between all domain controllers in that domain. 3. Global catalog contains information about all objects in the forest. It is repliated to all global catalog servers in the forest. See are video on the global catalog for more info. 4. What is that?
VPN is a way for encyption traffic between two points so that a 3rd party can not read it. If you have a look at the following video this goes into how to set up WIndows 2008 for remote access. Configure Remote Access on Windows Server 2008 R2
Thank you for making the information you present clear and easy to follow. However, what hands-on training recommendations could you provide that takes your knowledge and puts it into experience?
Gage Putman Thanks very much. It is are pleasure to make the videos for you. If you have the time and the hardware, I suggest that you create your only virtual environment. This is a good way to learn. You can see how we set up our home lab in our home lab series. itfreetraining.com/lab
That explains, so the LDAP role on SMC basically is extra for admin to edit /view, or to have more control? I wonder why so many videos I watched, and none of them talked about that role not being installed and protocol is still there. Anyway, thanks for your help.. that solves one of the mystery in LDAP in my head.
These videos are brilliant reading a windows server 2012 book which is so confusing but these videos are explained so well it makes it a lot simpler. Are you nearing a release for windows server 2012 course? sorry to ask but they are just so good can not find anything near the standard ! Thank you so much for making these videos
Thanks for video, however, in my company I don't see ldap protocol installed on any dc,servers,. I wonder how come? Do you have any idea why AD still works?
When I use nslookup -type srv _ldap._tcp.DOMAINNAME to locate the ldap, I see the servers shown (with ip adderss and all info), but when I go to server manager, and role - add role, the LDAP role was not added. So, i am just wondering how it finds the server and yet not showing in the server management role!? Any idea?

How much of this is still relevant in Modern Windows?
The basic concepts for Active Directory have remained the same. However, there is more a focus to moving to the cloud nowadays.
