I have a 2012 BMW 328i sedan with the N20 engine. I have 74,000 miles on it and after seeing this video and the one Kies Motorsports did, I decided to have my timing chain replaced. If y’all wanna avoid significant damage on your N20 engine (or keeping it from blowing up due to the timing chain) just change the timing chain once you reach 70k miles. I’ve seen multiple cases (friends and family members that owned N20s) that around the 70k-75k mile mark, you’ll notice the timing chain making a weird noise and/or the car not driving as smoothly as it should. At that time you should replace it and also changing your oil every 4K miles as well, some people don’t even change their oil until they reach 10k miles or more. Just keep maintenance a high priority and you’ll see your car will perform great but unfortunately changing the timing chain is unavoidable since it is a problem for the N20s.
Just avoid the engine all together, if a engine needs a timing chain replacement every 70k miles it's worth it. Update as of 4/22/2022. My claim for settlement was returned with a request for additional documentation which I provided on 11/2021. I am still waiting for the refund.
Took 1 year and 9 months, but I finally got my refund which was 75% of the total repair cost due to my cars mileage. @@The_KING24 0 issues as of yet and I’ve had it from August 2019 with 16,500 miles. Am at 38k now with the only purchases being new grilles and 2-3 oil changes. Last oil change I was told the oil pan had a tiny drip. A gasket is nothing to bitch about on this car! Also I’ve been using 5W-30 (European Synthetic Formula) instead of 0W-20 that BMW “recommends” under the hood. The engine is capable of running multiple viscosity’s, I suggest going with one to suit your style of driving to help prolong parts life. Good luck with the process and enjoy the F30 platform. Considering on a 340i F30 down the line eventually, it’s such a great car
According to bmw any n20 with production date after 02/2015 has updated timing chain guides . They extended the warranty to 7 years and 70k for vehicles made 02/2015 and under.
Well, once again, we're screwed. 2013 X3 Over 100K miles and moreover the vehicle was owned by the store we bought it from from nearly 5 years. If I had known this issue back in May of 2020 I would advised my other half to not get this thing. Now we're out alot of money and it stopped cold! Wont start, and is now throwing a Variable Valve error. So I guess we have a very expensive brick.
I think it's the fuel in the US with all the ethanol requirements causing the the timing chain guide to fail. I replaced my vapor canister purge solenoid twice already. Once under warranty and the 2nd time 40k later. Stuck open and no check engine light. You have to run the diagnostic tool to detect. I did an oil change an it smell of gasoline. This is just my theory. I drive an x1 2014 n20 e84 bmw 28i. So the solution to this issue is do more oil change. I'm due for a timing chain replacement soon also. Will be doing diy. Car not longer worth is kbb value vs repair cost.
I have a 2015 328i sedan with a March build date. I think that was the cutoff for when they apparently switched to the different timing chain. Seen a few marks on the chain when inspected from the oil cap area. High rpm whine but sounds fine with the accessory/serpentine belt off, so I believe it is the AC bearing. Had me pooping bricks before I tested it as such. In Canada so ZERO info for us ...
What's your milage. I just bought a March 2015 production date 328i with 40k I really hope they did change the guides after Feb. 2015 . According to the bmw extended warranty is only for cars up to 02. 2015 so I'm hoping we are in the clear
@@Technofiera that’s my thoughts. IF you want to know how your engine sounds on startup, idle and revving, remove your serpentine belt. You can run it for a few minutes in a garage. The AC pulley makes a lot of unpleasant noises which I thought was the engine!
If you're in Canada this doesn't apply and BMW will still deny the problem. The extended warranty that covers this problem also does not apply in Canada. Btw "BMW North America" means US only.
I have a 2012 328i with the N20. It has 117,000 miles. My Oil chain guide exploded first. That’s what the indy shop told me. So I have the car in the shop now to get a new timing chain and oil chain installed with the updated parts and all new guides. It’s costing me $3,000. Dealer wanted over 5k plus diagnoses fee. It’s stupid that bmw is using plastic components inside the engine. Valve cover is plastic, oil pan is plastic, guide rails are plastic. Planned obsolescence is in effect more than ever. Remember the plastic impellers on the old water pumps lol WHY BMW!? You used to make good engines!
I believe this only affected the 12/13 model years. The N20 engine doesnt do it for me, it is a power house for it being such a small engine but its not refined and its noisy. I have one of the late years of the N52 and it is SO much more silky smooth and refined than the N20. Just with the N52 had the ZF 8 speed to match.
So far so good 🙏🏼 I’ve read that more frequent oil changes can help deter the problem. Also feel that it’s completely random like you said! You never know with cars sometimes lol
I think 50% of all BMW problems down the road could have been prevented by having a much shorter oil change interval. They stretched that when they say 7500 or 10k. Knowing most people go 15 to 20 percent beyond the interval before changing.
I have a 2013 with 112k and BMW said to me to replace the engine was 12K. I didn't pay and bought the parts and tools to perform the replacement myself. It cost me $1500 and about a week of my life. The pictures from the timing chain explosion was crazy. I have owned several BMWs. I will never purchase another BMW.
N20/26 oil change every 5k miles ! Use 5w40 LL01!Dont use 0w20 Or 0w30! If you want to be safe you must update the timing chain around 70k ! I replaced on mine 2012 328i at 73k miles it was on half way out!!! All services was by bmw dealer with they’re 9k oil change interval 0w30! Don’t trust them! They want to sell new cars , parts and super expensive labor!!!
My claim was approved however they have not refunded me yet what I spent doing the engine replacement directly at a BMW service department. One month ago I got an email from the case claim administrator saying they mailed out to me a refund check three months ago and they said USPS sent back to them the envelope marked as “undeliverable”; I guess these folks didn’t put my address correctly and that’s why it was mailed back to them. I did provide them another address as they requested me in order to resend me that check but after one month since I did provide the new address no check has arrived yet and nobody has had the courtesy of replying my follow up emails asking for an update about ETA to receive said check and the amount that it will be refunded to me. Has some of you guys had issues to get the refund for the money spent on those repairs?…
Hey thic i realized that when I had the same issue you had with the car wanting to takeoff 24/7 it only happened when it sport or sport+ but comfort was pretty balanced. You should try it out and see if your satisifed
Doesn’t matter what mode I’m in. The tune has throttle closing issues all over the place. Take my word for it, I’ve done the research so you don’t have to and we’ve tested it thoroughly. Should I replace the timing chain and the likely to fail parts at my own expense now instead of risking an engine swap bill?
What model year? If it’s 2015 and up especially the 4 series that use the N20, you’re in the clear. I have 77k on my N20, 428i, and the timing chain feels brand new, like it’s cemented into the engine. I use AMSOIL Euro Formula Full SAPS oil, 5W-40 or 0W-40 depends on the season I’m in.
I got a 2012 328i and I am hearing a whining noise from the car whenever it’s cold but goes away after it’s warmed up. I have 74,500 miles on it and I am keeping the car for a very long time. I keep checking on the chain and there are times where there is some slack on the chain but like 95% of the time, the chain is rock solid. I’m just indecisive if I should replace it now and have piece of mind or wait till there is a major sign of it going bad.

I thought they settled out of court and they really only covered up to 100k miles on a sliding scale. They will not cover all those that failed later. BMW screwed its customers who were over 100k miles. Additionally, they have not changed the replacement guides.
@@ronm7781 The reimbursement program provides between 40% and 100% reimbursement for vehicle repairs depending on the mileage of the vehicle at the time of service. After that your on your own and you should look into an extended warrenty. Pretty cheezy. BMW should own up and just fix their dumb design. This is major surgery and comes with a huge risk if not done correctly. Putting a new chain in but being 180 out of time can destory the engine. Update as of 4/22/2022. My claim for settlement was returned with a request for additional documentation which I provided on 11/2021. I am still waiting for the refund.
Took 1 year and 9 months, but I finally got my refund which was 75% of the total repair cost due to my cars mileage. I followed up with the class action administrators about 3-4 times by email and certified mail to check the status, not sure if that helped but thought I would share for others seeking reimbursement. Best of luck to anyone who is still waiting on a claim.
I have a 11/2015 N20 so thank god I managed to avoid those early engines, you originally guided my purchase of my LCI 328i over a year ago! Appreciate all the content!!!
Dude I'm thinking of pulling the plug for the 328i but am scared of the timing chain lmao. Is it true that they fixed it with the 2015 models & up??
Cheers mate 🍻
@@The_KING24 I believe all cars manufactured 07/2015 and later had the revised timing chain guides
@@lowk3ychris484 if that's the case I'm going to buy next week then 🤪. Btw u had any issues arise on your one mate? 🍻
Yep, for the letter as well. 4/2014 built 428i, 6MT, 47K miles. No issues thus far. Thanks for putting out the video.
Mine is a 2/15 build lol. Guess I'll send it.
what color are the chain guides ? are they still white or did they become orange from the oil stain ? if white, then that's the new parts for sure...
2013 bmw 328i msport manual has 128k miles running strong !
If you're in Canada this doesn't apply and BMW will still deny the problem. The extended warranty that covers this problem also does not apply in Canada.
Btw "BMW North America" means US only.
I just got this letter yesterday, you are the man
I have a 2012 328i with the N20.
I pay 900€ for that repair in the netherlands
I believe this only affected the 12/13 model years. The N20 engine doesnt do it for me, it is a power house for it being such a small engine but its not refined and its noisy. I have one of the late years of the N52 and it is SO much more silky smooth and refined than the N20. Just with the N52 had the ZF 8 speed to match.
My 2015 X3 went through a nightmare this year. I will be filling this form out and submitting it for reimbursal.
@@CarsWithKeav agreed!
Paid nearly 5k to get mine replaced.... Really was a gut punch once I heard that whining high RPM sound 🤦🏾♂️
Why so expensive? Here in the netherlands Its only 900€
I have a 2013 with 112k and BMW said to me to replace the engine was 12K. I didn't pay and bought the parts and tools to perform the replacement myself. It cost me $1500 and about a week of my life. The pictures from the timing chain explosion was crazy. I have owned several BMWs. I will never purchase another BMW.
Listening to this video in my car gave me several heart attacks with those gong sounds😩😩😩
2013 X3, 68k miles, guides failed Feb 12th, 2021. Dealer wanted $4700. Took it to Indy shop $3500.
Here in the netherlands i only pay €900 for that.
What the heck? What's my claimant ID#??? My VIN# doesn't work. HELP
I got a letter during thanksgiving time from a lawyer in Jersey. I thought it was a joke. I'll be calling him today. Mine is for f10 water pump

Not just me, multiple people running the same tune on this platform. If you don’t have a Supra however, none of this applies to you.

Got my timing chain replaced yesterday by bmw. It cost me $137 and bmw paid the rest.
How were you able to get them to do that? Was there an issue with the chain already or was it fine and just wanted to be replaced?
@@steven90m So I went into BMW for a regular oil change. Mind you I was having no issues related to the timing chain or anything in the car really. It has been running great since the day I got it. So when I went into BMW she pulled up my info and said your car is out of Warranty for the 7 year 70k timing chain replacement. She said through some program I would only have to pay 5% of the cost and BMW would pay 95%. So I said go ahead since I know timing chain can be an issue in N26 after like 80k miles. So I think overall cost was like 3k but I ended up having to pay only 5%.

im buying a 2014 428i n20 should i be worried about the timing chain?
My BMW is 108K miles and never had a timing chain problem. But the important question this video has not answered is : HOW LIKELY WILL MY ENGINE BLOW UP DUE TO A BAD TIMING CHAIN IN THE FUTURE? Should I replace the timing chain and the likely to fail parts at my own expense now instead of risking an engine swap bill?
What model year? If it’s 2015 and up especially the 4 series that use the N20, you’re in the clear. I have 77k on my N20, 428i, and the timing chain feels brand new, like it’s cemented into the engine. I use AMSOIL Euro Formula Full SAPS oil, 5W-40 or 0W-40 depends on the season I’m in.
If it definitely earlier n20’s? I have a 6-2016 built n20.
The slapping sound is the timing chain huh
I got a 2012 328i and I am hearing a whining noise from the car whenever it’s cold but goes away after it’s warmed up. I have 74,500 miles on it and I am keeping the car for a very long time. I keep checking on the chain and there are times where there is some slack on the chain but like 95% of the time, the chain is rock solid. I’m just indecisive if I should replace it now and have piece of mind or wait till there is a major sign of it going bad.
The whining noise is probably just the direct fuel injection, I have a 2014 328i that needs to warm up a little as well.
@@lanaakila you know if having modifications void the settlement? I have chargepipes, intake, inlet pipe, and it’s on stage 1 right now but I’m gonna go stage 2 after downpipe and intercooler later.

Yo. I had a 2009 Mini Clubman JCW and the timing chain failed twice! BMW covered it both times, but it was a fight! Now I have a 2015 328 GT and thankfully I haven’t had any issues. I received the letter last week, and I filled it out anyway and mailed it. 🤷🏾♂️
I have BMW X3. I start morning. After 5 mins its stop. I towed to bmw. They ask change timing belt. Pay 8000$ It’s mileage 145000km
I haven’t had that issue yet but I did have to replace the valve cover gasket and the oil pan gasket (I think that’s what they were called) and that bill ended up being around $6,000 😂
I know a shop valve cover 150 , 250$ pan gasket
In Canada
to date, has there been a recall on the Guide? My 2013 528xi has 104000 now and took a "dirt nap" after picking it up from the mechanic, who was doing an oil change-turns out to be this timing belt/guard.....only got a mile from the shop...
What an awesome video! Thanks so much for this!
I thought they settled out of court and they really only covered up to 100k miles
on a sliding scale. They will not cover all those that failed later. BMW screwed its customers who were over 100k miles.
Additionally, they have not changed the replacement guides.
70 000 miles not 100
@@ronm7781 The reimbursement program provides between 40% and 100% reimbursement for vehicle repairs depending on the mileage of the vehicle at the time of service. After that your on your own and you should look into an extended warrenty.
Pretty cheezy.
BMW should own up and just fix their dumb design. This is major surgery and comes with a huge risk if not done correctly. Putting a new chain in but being 180 out of time can destory the engine.
It's such a dumb idea to make this assembly, the chain guide, completely out of plastic only. Having access to the belt tensioner is also another issue.
I am curious, did they redesign the guide or are they just replacing it with the same faulty, in stock, design?
