I had to replace my timing chain at 120K miles or after 10 years on my X5 35d engine. Living in Los Angeles, it was difficult to find a mechanic to replace the timing chain. Most BMW shops in the area didn’t work on BMW diesel engines. The dealership was charging 14K for the replacement with a disclosure that the service was more than the value of the vehicle. I was able to find a shop in Monrovia, European Motor Works, that specializes in BMW diesel engines, to do the service. The service recommended replacing other components like the oil pump, gaskets, sealers, etc. that likely would be breaking due to the mileage of the vehicle. My car purrs like a young feline. The service was costly but I get to continue riding my vehicle for another 100K miles. Now I am to replace my engine oil every 5K miles not what the computer read out says on the dashboard. BMW dealerships provide a 3 year oil service under 200 dollars but with the computer reading of 10k miles….not worth it….since that could contributed to having a loose timing chain of my vehicle. That’s something that needs to be addressed with BMW mechanics on preventive measures and not relying on what the dealerships of BMW offers and recommends.😢
I’m have a question
My chain doesn’t do any movement but if you move chain guide that visible from oil cap it moves from side to side with the chain…
… is it normal?
guides should have some wiggle room when cold but if its moving like 1/4 an inch that's definitely snapped guides. just replaced my timing chain at 150k miles and had no visible signs and my chain was tight. i didnt think about it until i got the engine oil pressure too low warning and found out my guides completely fell off and my engine could have exploded
What's the labor cost on this? If you supply your own parts at a local shop not the BMW stealership.

Are you able to tell me what the seal puller is? I can’t seem to find it anywhere
Damnn how much is this job

will this new chain stretch again and damage? for how long?
Yes overtime just like the OEM one prob 80-120k miles
@@acidynamix so, what i understand is that , the original design of the timing chain stretched early but this one the redesigned last longer?
Why bother with the labor intensive replacement of old plastic parts with new plastic parts. Why not upgrade and replace plastic with metal followers and tensioners.
I think mine slipped on my BMW x3 28i, it’s been sitting in my driveway for 3 years now. Not sure what to do with it. How can I tell if the engine is still good? Should I try to turn it over by hand or take apart enough to see timing chain?
Would you all recommend upgrading the plastic oil pan on a RWD N26 to an aluminum one while doing this job? Is that upgrade worth it?
@@evdorn preference doesn’t hurt to upgrade!
i just got a 2013 528i (an awd one) with the n20 with a broken guide. the finger that loops over the chain at the exhaust gear was completly broken off as seen through oil fill and chain super loose
I have a 2011 328i. How much would this repair cost me for that vehicle.
5k

I got a 2014 328I with 55k miles with N20. If there are no issues does it make sense to change the timing chain guides as a preventive measure?
Only if you plan on keeping your 328 for another 100K, otherwise I'd trade it in for a newer 2018 and up model. Been there.
Where are you guys located and how much will it be to replace the chain and the oil pump?

Great video!
Question......
Is it possible to replace JUST the upper guide (between the cams) without going through all this? And, after replacing that guide, how long till the guide turns from white to brown. (Long story). Thanks
I would recommend doing them all if you go in there
And I no longer want this vehicle
@@SAVageGaMinGLime311RClips you’ll be alright haha
Can you please tell me what causes the chain guides to fail/brake? Has the timing chain tensioner failed at that point and the chain is not that "tight" anymore and hits the guides which consequently get damaged and brake?
Thank you!
I looked into it and the problem seems to be the timing chain guides themselves since they’re made of plastic they wear out faster. At least from what I’ve read online
just a cheap plastic
how much was it to get this service?
Contact office.acidynamix@gmail.com. Say you came from RUclips for a discount!
What does a job like that cost my wife has a 2014 328i
$5k
Do you use the flywheel locating pin and flywheel lock tool for loosening and torquing the crank bolt?
Yes
@@acidynamix Thank you. I found your video very helpful and enjoyable too. It's a shame I don't live closer.
@@r.weaver3769 thank you!! We appreciate you watching!
Nice
If you do a visual check and the guide is not orange but white does this means maybe it’s been replaced already ?
White guides usually indicate replacement yes!
😎💪
Can the timing chain cause engine misfire in the high RPM range?
It could but more likely related to spark plugs or a coil pack. Very common on those cars.
@@acidynamix I already changed coils, plugs, injectors, maf sensor...
@@3xcelsi0r10you ever figure out the problem just got a 328 dealing with the crazy idle safe mode
@@IsaacYtacc yoop got an entire new engine
After performing this service, this engine has some problems here in the summary?
In another roughly 120k miles. Its just wear over time
@@acidynamix Does this engine have any other problems?
@@giorgigujabidze3436 not on this one
@@acidynamix thanks bro💪💪
Imagine paying all that money for a bmw, only to have plastic timing guides, valve cover and plastic oil pan(not sure which model has the plastic oil pans).smh
Agreed
Every brand has everything plastic now a days
@@ralphismaximum7 I find that the more expensive brands are using more plastic.
plastic is not about saving money. It's about saving weight
@@andyandy7968 it's about saving money and making money..these parts usually fails outside the factory warranty.thatsbone of the reason people sell them before the warranty is up
Could you maybe have found a slightly more aggravating background drum beat? I couldn't finish the video as I didn't want to turn the sound off in case I missed a comment but it wasn't worth the aggravation of listening to the music with that terrible beat.
How much did you guy’s charge for this boss
