  • Jody Gerut played 574 MLB games for five franchises (Cleveland, Chicago (NL), Pittsburgh, San Diego and Milwaukee) during his 6-year career.
While his career was majorly effected by injuries and roster crunches, Gerut managed to amass 7.2 WAR during his MLB tenure; Gerut finished his career with a lifetime .262 average, 59 HRs, 226 RBI, 30 SB and a statistically above average OPS of .758.
In Cleveland, Gerut was named Sporting News' Rookie of the Year after the 2003 campaign, finishing his rookie season with 22 HRs, 33 2Bs and a .279 average.
With the emergence of outfielders Grady Sizemore and Coco Crisp, and Gerut recovering from a significant knee injury, Cleveland decided to ship Gerut to Cubs in July of 2005. In a strange twist of fate, Gerut was traded by Chicago to the Pittsburgh Pirates just 13 days later, in exchange for former Cleveland teammate, Matt Lawton.
After just 18 plate appearances in Pittsburgh, Gerut's time with the Pirates came to an end after re-aggravating his knee injury.
Jody Gerut finally returned to professional baseball in 2008 - more than 2 years since his last game with Pittsburgh, and showed he was still a legitimate MLB batter when healthy. After raking in AAA Portland, Gerut had a tremendous 2008 season with the big league Padres, hitting .296 with 14 HRs and 43 RBIs in just 356 games.
However, despite this production the then-31 year old Gerut was not in the young, rebuilding Padres' plans. Gerut opened the 2009 season with San Diego, but ultimately was traded to Milwaukee later that year. On a strong Brewers team, Gerut mainly served as the team's pinch hitter in mid-to-late innings.
Gerut finished the 2009 campaign strong, hitting .271 (126 PAs) with 5 HR, 18 RBI and 11 BBs to 15 strikeouts in the final two months of the season.
Gerut's final season would take place in 2010, which was largely a struggle outside of his magical 4-hit in Arizona which resulted in Gerut's first career cycle.
