This opening cutscene to the fight is so dramatically different from anything else in the whole series. We caught glimpses of it in Y6, but it was something that is just surface level: Kiryu's tired because he's been forced to take a beating. LAD: Gaiden is different. The framing of both Shishido and Kiryu as being beaten, broken, and bloody in the heart of what is effectively a dead kingdom is perfect. They're absolutely exhausted, and around them the liminal space of a throne room is hollow and devoid of purpose. There's nothing left to fight for. Even if Shishido secures his victory, the Omi is still going to be eviscerated with the looming crackdown on organized crime, but if Shishido accepts that then he's just going to fall through the cracks of society, and he knows it. This crumbling throne is all he has left. He simply can't let it be for nothing. Kiryu shattering the heraldry of the Omi with Shishido's bulk is great symbolism. In the same fashion, this is Kiryu cementing his legacy; the inheritor to a cancer that has been the death knell of the Tojo ever since the very first game, and giving a life he's always known a respectful end rather than a violent one is acknowledgement of how that life has been and always will be so important to him. The irony isn't lost on me at all with the reveal that Kiryu has cancer for Y8's story trailer in light of LAD: Gaiden. His word choice is perfect for the scene as well: passing on a learned wisdom to someone else while also acknowledging the dragon ravaged the kingdom to ruin. It ends the only way it should. Two souls in opposition speaking in the only language they know how: their fists. A dragonslayer with a sword to protect a dead kingdom, and the ancient dragon accepting an inevitable fate.
The way the OST changes to "Fleeting Dream" in the last phase is also some amazing symbolism. Much like with Aizawa, Kiryu was slowly pushing Shishido further and further away from the throne room, which also symbolically highlights how Shishido was getting further and further away from his dream, until he was outside and too far away from it. And Fleeting Dream, unlike "Deadly Struggle" or any of the other sad final boss themes (Nishiki and Ryuji's) also sounds sad but not in a "this sucks" way. Instead it perfectly captures a nostalgic kind of sadness, the true end of an era as Kiryu is about to finish off the last remnants of a bygone era. I'm so happy Gaiden exist because it gives us a very important perspective on the dissolution that Ichiban & Co simply could never show us. This might well be one of *the* best final sections in the series, it's just chock full of fanservice and symbolism telling us the end of the old era of Yakuza, and the beginning of a new era.
Not just the heraldy being shattered...just before that, Shishido breaks his sword on that same insignia, as if that's another sign that the Omi are bound to fall sooner or later, even if he wins here. How far would he get anyway, ruling an empty kingdom on a crumbling throne?

His tattoo also has a deeper meaning on this, it's a Shisha (Similar to his name), or lion dog, who in mythos is the protector of dharama (teachings of the buddha), so his tattoo and name make him literally born to protect the yakuza way, even as it crumbles. I'm getting tired of seeing dragons tbh but i'm glad when there's a new tattoo it has meaning and it's not just le funny animal

He had to struggle for everything to get to this stage in his life. The Yakuza is everything to him, he finally had a chance to take it all, and now Kiryu and the others want to take that away from under him? Deadly Struggle is probably one of the most aggressive and violent tracks in the whole of the series, because it represents that a raging, wild animal is going up against an immovable object, and neither one is going to just give up easily. And when you take the battle outside finally, the soundtrack becomes far more sombre. The sun is setting on the afternoon, but it's setting on the Omi Alliance itself. All that's left is to put Shishido down once and for all, in the only way he understands. And the image of Kiryu finally winning by just punching Shishido off of the building with the force of a freight train is one that's going to stick with me for a long time. Kiryu put everything he had into that last punch.
Someone said somewhere else that Kiryu stuck true to the words he said in the fight against the limping Omis. Not once does Kiryu try and directly dodge Shishido's attacks. No matter what, he always counters his attacks with such a full display of force it would literally send someone flying. Before the battles in the sunset, Kiryu tells Daigo that Shishido's old school. Many other yakuza included, they will not give up and accept losing their livelihood without being given everything and giving it their all themselves. So that's what Kiryu does above all else against Shishido. He does not falter. He does not cower. But he will show Shishido that his best won't beat *him.* He *will* show him that the sun is setting on the dream they fought for. And that's just damn poetic. God, what a great ending man.

@@RandomCollection04 think the same happened with y0's twin dragons, there was a little motif of it before the fight. also reminds me of the different intros of penumbra
Same goes for most of the final bosses - in Y0, Y2/Kiwami2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6 - they all have a subtle intro theme for final bosses. before the main final boss theme starts.
When Saejima said Shishido was like a cornered animal it was truly a warning for Majima. When Majimas blade when through Shishido's hand but he still kept going it really put Majima off guard because of his lack of self preservation and Majima would have very well been gravely injured if not for Saejima stopping Shishidos blade. Saejima was even like "what the fuck are you doing Goro". Then this guy holds his own against 2 of the most poweful men in the series and shoves them away just like that. So good. Also really felt a lot of parallels to this fight and Aizawas's battle which was also someone who very well went head to head with the strongest out there.
that violin in enemies and it slowly rises up to deadly struggle OOOHHHHHHHHHHHH man, i don't think any onther game can impress me like this. The violin as the chracters flow, the journey Kiryu- i mean... "Joryu..." has done, the enemies Joryu fought through the years, everyone he lost, everyone is building up to this final true boss fight. The build-up is intense, the battle is intense, everything is on the line, to deliver a worthy battle, of the man who wants a un-matchable amount of power, to reign victoriously, versus the man who erased his name to protect his family and loved ones. This game is amazing. Best game i've ever played on my entire life.
My favourite little detail of this fight is 7:14. When Kiryu grabs the blade, you can see the blood come out of his hand. It's an amazing little detail which adds to the brutality
What gaiden has done in the last chapter is nothing short of masterful. Sure the story is a bit clunky and "nonsensical" but that's the magic of Like a Dragon/Judgement franchise where it knows when to be serious and when to be funny. It lays out a finality and give weights that the days of the Yakuza has ended that Kiryu had known for all his life that LaD7 can't give. And Shishido being one of the best antagonist that RGG has done from him being a old school yakuza in his fallen kingdom and grasping at whatever's left of the omi that is the empty throne and a fun character to fight/fight along with. RGG in a span of 6 months. Has created such a great game, accompanied by amazing soundtracks, the most refined dragon style engine combat for kiryu that pays homage to the history of the franchise and life of kiryu.
I think my favourite part about all of this is how well each part actually EXPRESSES something. Sworn Enemies has a lingering sense of danger, but despite that, you only feel regretful. Kiryu is taking down his past pride here, and he is quite literally looking at a personification of the power Yakuza held in his past. And now, he's playing the role of tearing himself away from his dream for a reason. Deadly Struggle is absolutely brimming with fury. Almost every single section sounds like it's rumbling with a violent intensity, just like Shishido. He wants to kill you, and yet still, the violin from Sworn Enemies is baked into the song. Underneath everything is still the lingering truth both Kiryu and Shishido know: the yakuza are done. Fleeting Dream is the beautiful ending. It's the sunset in the most literal sense possible. Finally, both Shishido and Kiryu are closing in on facing reality, and to support it, the electric guitar plays to invoke this feeling of nostalgia, but also peace. You, the player, get to think back at how many times you've experienced this as Kiryu. How many times you faced an honorable foe head-on, how many times you've watched a life end from Kiryu's eyes. This is now the ending for Kiryu's story of the Yakuza, and Shishido's too. The story comes to a close, even if you didn't want it to.
Shishido’s tattoo is so perfect too, the full wrap over the arms and shoulders in 2020, with the lion on the back, the king of the jungle that takes what it wants because it can, and those under it on the food chain fear it because they know the lion WILL take what it wants. His tattoo also has the claws tinged red, which in that older style of art meant they were freshly wet with blood The lion fights only for his own sake and those in his pride, and relies on his immense strength to do it with extreme efficiency
Deadly Struggle isn't just brimming with Shishido's anger...it's the anger of the Yakuza as a whole, who've endured for decades and don't want to go out quietly. The Omi Alliance is practically gutted and there's nothing left to fight for, but they just hurl themselves against the Yakuza legends facing them, over and over again.
RGG have made the right decision in keeping Shishido alive as a Daidoji captive. This creates an opportunity for him to be reintroduced organically into the RGG timeline. Whereas Murinaga disappeared only to return as Hanawa and Aiwaza has disappeared *completely*.
I love the transition at 7:51 so much. Fleeting Dreams is so beautiful, so representative of the final boss it's genuinely one of my favorite pieces of music from the whole series
One of the few bosses I almost rooted for against kiryu . Kosei deserved to be head of the omi after all he suffered... I believe saejima said it best... this clan is the only proof people like us exist... kiryu wants to be erased. Kosei isn't going quietly what does what he respond with.. what he knows best is to struggle and fight.
The thing about this fight and Kiryu in general that it basically exposes Kiryu for who he really is. This man is really Yakuza to the core. He lowkey enjoyed being back into the Yakuza limelight to throw hands and be the baddest motherfucker around. Its almost an addiction and its the reason why he would help the Tojo Clan for the majority of his saga. Buts not until 5 where it starts to not being a good thing. He can longer feed the addiction he has because now his kids are growing up into young adults. 5 is literally the only game he is forced to come back. 2, 3 (kinda) & 4 he involved himself into Yakuza business. By 6 he is really guilt ridden. He spent the last decades of trying to be a father and his "duties"/honor ties to the Yakuza, he was emotionally finished of putting his loved ones at risk but he makes a stupid decision to become forgotten but its never easy because the life he thought he put behind followed him back into his grave to revive him and Gaiden and Infinite Wealth is set in stone.
He was forced to come back in 4 tbh. 2 was the only game he willingly chose to comeback to atone for the events of 1 and 3 was kinda both force but free choice to get into that whole saga
Shishido is basically Aizawa but better tho, his motives is clear enough to be seen and he would do anything to reach the top and make his own "Yakuza World" Unfortunately he fails at the hand of The Legendary Dragon, who's already too much for him to handle, can't blame him tho, at least he tried...
Shishido is basically Aizawa from Yakuza 5 but actually done right. This dude made Aizawa look like a joke in comparison Props to RGG Studios for doing that.
I wouldn't say "he's Aizawa done right". Aizawa was exactly what he was intended to be. A spoiled child put on the throne by his father fighting to prove himself as anything but that. Not even really knowing why. He was there to be the other side of a coin. He was trying to reject his father, while taking it all. Meanwhile, Haruka embraced hers, giving everything up. Shishido is a cornered animal. A guardian of bygone dreams and ideals. Different from Aizawa, he was a man with purpose. Even if that purpose was meant to be his downfall. And he knew it too. But he couldn't take it laying down.
@@TenienteDraza thats fair. he had a few interesting things going for him but he suffered from a problem a lot of rgg villains have in that he didn’t have a lot of screentime
A struggle indeed: Between the dreams of the Yakuza and the dream of an elite that rose to the to top (0:32 even for a minute) and decided with the other elites to tear it all down because "Those who are struggling just to get through their daily lives....The dreams of the yakuza don't mean a damn thing." (1:49) sounds very childish coming from the near 60+ Kiryu not to elaborate further when they all just witnessed the dissolution. This was also during the time of the anti-Yakuza laws being passed by the then Ryo Aoki. At the time, Shishido couldn't have known that Watase+Daigo was going to form a security company so the former yakuza can find legitimate jobs in Y7, and so it makes the boss music here a bit meaningful. Shishido barely became a family Lieutenant. We know from past games that it takes a lot of blood to rise up the ranks, especially in the Watase Family of all places....
Indeed. But Kiryu just does not give a fuck anymore about the Yakuza and thus he cannot be arsed to give an answer to Shishido. He could have indeed told him the truth that the Japanese government were cracking down on the Yakuza and that the Yakuza laws would enslave the Yakuza no matter who sat on the throne, and that the general public would not care at all. But he gave an insulting answer to Shishido instead of the truth. Why offend Shishido? He wanted to beat the shit out of Shishido himself. He wanted to fight.
I'm pretty sure Shishido did know about the laws on Yakuza, just not the security company part. He would rather be a slave to the government than leave the Yakuza.
I think Kiryu is talking about how the idea of the "Yakuza Dream" is no longer palatable for modern society, given that it crushes everything in its path, especially the innocent. Kiryu has been out of the Yakuza for so long that he knows what is like to struggle against Yakuza that target even the most innocent, considering he keeps getting roped into situations that made him and his friends and family worse off. Hence, this dissolution of the two main Yakuza clans is meant to end the cycle, by fighting against a person that does not see the "catch" of his dream.
No. He knew about what's coming. And he knew about the Yakuza safety net too. Watase mentioned it in front of him. He just couldn't let it go because there was nothing else for him.

if only we yankees still had a buncha real story tellers making cowboys seem as amazing as the stories in these games or even more better somehow\ but dam this cutscene dug and slapped so hard without the talking and the just subtitles and the music banging in your face on a homer theater setup
I would much rather separate the two parts of Sworn Enemies + Deadly Struggle and Fleeting Dreams into two separate videos cause I just want to listen to the former on repeat (As I am doing now.)
Did anyone else have any music mixing problems with Gaiden? I ended up having to lower every other type of sound and raising the master to get a good mix on the music. I hear this has been a problem with a couple other DE games like 6.
I've seen a number of comments comparing this to the Aizawa fight and honestly I don't see it. For one thing, Shishido gets twice as much characterization as Aizawa ever did, in a game that's half the length; Aizawa even lampshades it at the end of Y5, admitting he has no idea why he's even there when you confront him in Tojo HQ (not that I think that was the intent per se, but that's how it reads to me).
I don’t think they’re comparing the characters to each other, it’s more about the fight itself they’re comparing. Aizawa wanted to prove himself, and Shishido wanted to latch onto the yakuza and fight to keep it kicking, the yakuza was his everything. The way Aizawa and Shishido fight Kiryu through the building until they eventually make it outside is similar though, and I think that’s what people mean when they compare them.
If you ask me, it feels like Shishido and Ebina were RGGs attempts to do what they were going for with Aizawa and Iwami, and I think they did both shishido and ebina very well but shishido especially

Best game i've ever played on my entire life.
p.s: this was not written with ChatGPT, since im literally banned off it lol
Yakuza 5s ending walked so this ending could run
My favourite little detail of this fight is 7:14. When Kiryu grabs the blade, you can see the blood come out of his hand. It's an amazing little detail which adds to the brutality
I'm glad RGG Studio didn't screw up the final boss and ending for Kiryu's saga. And everything about Shishido's fight is perfection.
Shishido’s VA did such an unbelievable job
"In this town we have guys that could beat an entire army if the need"
Ryuji said that right?
@@charliemcmillan4561 Tanimura

His tattoo also has the claws tinged red, which in that older style of art meant they were freshly wet with blood
The lion fights only for his own sake and those in his pride, and relies on his immense strength to do it with extreme efficiency
I think they’ve been regretting killing off all their fan favorites like ryuji, hence the constant references to him

Unfortunately he fails at the hand of The Legendary Dragon, who's already too much for him to handle, can't blame him tho, at least he tried...
God the symbolism in this fight.
Shishido is basically Aizawa from Yakuza 5 but actually done right. This dude made Aizawa look like a joke in comparison
Props to RGG Studios for doing that.
Preach bro

I wholeheartedly agree. I can't stop listening to this tune.
From 5:42 and forward - absolutely divine.
"Maybe I'll go visit those kids in Okinawa"
Kiryu: "L + Didn't ask + you're ugly"
I love his unshaken response. “You dont go any further than this. Say what you want, that outcome isnt changing”
As a straight man I can confirm that the Yakuza universe has some of the most attractive men

Did anyone else have any music mixing problems with Gaiden? I ended up having to lower every other type of sound and raising the master to get a good mix on the music. I hear this has been a problem with a couple other DE games like 6.
For me music was quieter than everything else, so thank goodness they started to split each audio into its own setting
I had this issue too, probably why the yakuza style theme sounds so much better on youtube than in-game, at least for me
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR DAMMIT!
