And I would venture to say that most of this crowd weren't even born when Freddie died. But then, we Brits are born knowing these lyrics. It's in the blood.

True. As a 66 yr old British metal head, not singing along to Boh Rap is impossible. :)

I would go as far as to say that most of the crowd’s parents were still in diapers when the song was released.

Before the band came on stage they played a recording of Bohemian Rhapsody (maybe just the backing track) to entertain the crowd and the entire crowd started singing it. And incredibly, they sang the whole thing, from beginning to end. Freddie will never die as long as people are singing his songs. Freddie was once asked what instrument he played, and he replied "the crowd, darling, the crowd." And he still does it, without even being there.

As far as I read, the song Bohemian Rhapsody was playing as background music while the band was getting ready to perform. The crowd then started singing along.
It must be an incredible experience to be a part of something like that.

Aah Freddie! Who else could get a huge crowd to respond like this without even being there?!

  • @susangardner3519

It's the law in the UK.
If Bohemian Rhapsody comes on you have to sing along doing all the parts both singing and instrumental breaks. 😂

They're in harmony. Thats insane. That means they ALL knew the song so well, they could randomly harmonized.

They were playing music before the concert started. When the crowd started singing, the band waited until the song ended to come onto the stage.

From my understanding, the band hadn't been on stage yet and the venue started playing Bohemian Rhapsody (music only) and the crowd joined in.

Before shows many band just have music playing in the background. This was one of them that played over the loudspeakers well before the show

I don't know of any other band that can take this kind of attention without even being there. This song came out when I was 12. Most of this crowd is probably about my daughter's age and younger, and they all know the entire song word for word, even working together to get all the parts right. I'm pretty sure that it's slowly infiltrating our DNA at this point. It just goes to show how relevant Queen still is, and always will be.

Can confirm. This song came out well before I was born. I have no recollection of how I even learned the lyrics, it's like it's just part of growing up in Britain.
I go to a lot of anime and videogame conventions, and guaranteed despite what the convention is about BoRhap ends up being played at some point, and even the pre-teens sing along. We don't have any cues or lyrics to follow it just happens. It's always a bit of a surreal experience.

Green Day do this at every gig - 10 minutes before they come on they play Bohemian Rhapsody and then follow it with Blitzkrieg Bop before the band come out - they're big Queen fans, apparently. I was one of the 65,000 at Hyde Park...you can probably see me waving?

When I started going to concerts waaay back in the day that would be one thing we'd pay attention to - what music the band would play before they came out. B/c that's the music THEY were into!

“Love of my life in Rio, Brazil. This is a Queen son. When the music started the people in the concert started singing. They know the lyrics, but they don’t speak English. there were more than 250,000 people singing . Freddie Mercury though they aren’t understanding what he was singing, but they know the lyrics of the songs. Rio, Brazil 1985.

Whenever I watch this amazing video, I can't help wondering what the Green Day band members backstage were thinking when they heard their own crowd singing this. I reckon they must have been absolutely blown away as much as I was when I first saw it. Just incredible. 🙋‍♂

I think these lyrics are just ingrained into the collective consciousness of people in the UK and Ireland. Our school choir did a version of Bohemian Rhapsody when I was 15, Freddie had already been dead for maybe 9 years at that point but almost everyone already knew the lyrics.

No no, dont do that. Most of the rest of the world loves it, too. Use it to draw _out_ the enemy, as soon as the third act guitars kick in most of them will start jumping (you'll all have to wear ear plugs, though)

I honestly can't think of another song that would get this kind of total synergy from 65,000 people completely spontaneously. I'm a big fan of The Beatles (who I think were the next best live performers next to Queen, considering neither had autotune or monitors/ear pieces) but even The Beatles don't have a song that could engender this kind of reaction. Queen were unique - Freddie was unique - and he's still so missed. The average age of the Green Day crowd was, apparently less than the number of years Freddie's been dead. Make of that what you will!

You need to understand something about British culture, from a very young age we are conditioned to sing in groups.. it starts in morning assemblies in schools from a young age where we group sang hymns!
And Freddie was beloved in Britain.. we ALL know the lyrics to his songs, especially this! If this is played we SING!!
I can guarantee everyone in Britain can sing this song, but ask them to sing just one verse of our national anthem and most won’t be able to!!
    God bless you Freddie..
