Thank you for this video I'm actually removing my timing cover on a XR8 ute because I changed the water pump and a bolt decided it's new home is permanent. So I need to remove this to get timing cover off. Thank you mate straight to the point and we'll filmed. Cheers
i actually just done the timing cover on my ute , same issue with 2 top bolts being seized, unfortunately i didnt have time to make a vid. i managed to save the bolts by cutting the water pump off around the seized bolts and heated the timing cover and bolt with gas torch and slowly rocked the bolt back and forward until they finally came out. i also replaced the timing chain as it was pretty sloppy..
You mate, are a top bloke. 100s of people would’ve changed xr8 harmonic balancers. But you’re the only to video it. Helped me out a tonne. Hope you’re still using this account cause I’ve got a couple questions about the balancer
What weight balancer did you use? Have a 1998 au 2 fairmont with the 302 Windsor, noticed there were a couple different weight ones online. What do you recommend?
@@ontherark6569 if your running the standard au flywheel then it would be 50oz balancer to mach the au flywheel , Part No: HB1463N. from memory it was the earlier windsor v8s that used the 28oz balancer
Thks man. Great video, very informative and you covered everything perfectly. Well done. I am now making plans to fit mine as the vibration is worsening. About $250 for a Powerbond brand which is the cheapest I would suggest. No point using cheap chinese forge in essential parts like this. Not that I use chinese anything if I can avoid it, but thats another story.
job well done, just curious though, what was the symptom that caused you to change the balancer for a new one? mines currently vibrating at ~1100rpm just started this morning so im thinking bout throwing a balancer at it but i dont wanna waste any money hey
i had a vibration through the car at idle up to around 1500 to 2000rpm, it became more apparent when i had the drivers door open at idle or around 1000rpm, i could see the door would oscillate up and down slightly, and on visual inspection i could see the counterweight on the balancer was not running true
@@backyardmechanical thanks mate, good memory you got there haha 👍 im hoping my problem is only the balancer and not the crankshaft, like you describe mine also sorta smooths out up in the higher rev range and it seems similiar enough that i think its gonna be the same issue, i inspected my balancer and couldnt really see any wobbling maybe ive just caught it early enough for it to not get too bad
@@backyardmechanical yea i pulled all the leads one at a time and they all made a difference, bought the part today so im just gonna eat the loss if im wrong, but i dont think i am 👍
it was shaking and vibrating through the car from idle to around 2000 rpm, on visual inspection the counterweight had started to become dislodged from the rubber dampener
Automotive Enterprises Australia I've had mine since 50,000k's, it's always had a shake at around 900 rpm, recently that has extended to 1500 rpm, its now done 210,000, found number 4 lead is damaged so gonna try changing the leads 1st

Love the music 🤣 great lil vid
I have a EB fairlane and it looks like something is hanging off the back of the crank pulley and the motors shaking like mad what could that be
That’s the harmonic balancer. It bolts to the crank pulley. Have to remove to replace.
What indicated to you that you needed to replace the harmonic balancer?

Do you happen to know anything about a supercharger kit for a 1998 or so v8 falcon?
