I had my start as a kid through the local old timers/hunters and a little later ex servicemen all for free because few listened to them then so they were happy to pass on knowledge if you showed an interest. So I had some early instruction, the initial direction and just being shown the possibilities was invaluable. Inevitably you are going to have to do things on your own or with people who know about the same as you so you have to get your knowledge from somewhere. There's a few good British and continental European instructors you didn't mention but for these purposes I'll mention only one, Paul Kirtley. He was from Ray Mears school and has his own successful school these days. He has tonnes of YT videos done over nearly a decade and all free to watch. A great little resource for all of us.

Sorry I'm just not familiar with people across the pond. However I have heard of Ray before and just never checked out his videos but I will tonight.

I really enjoy your contributions on here. You seem to be very practical and grounded...characteristics which I admire. If I missed the answer in this video...have you attended 1 or more bushcraft schools? I suspect I know the answer, but I would just like confirmation.

To answer your question flat out, no I have not attended a school for survival training or bushcraft. However whether someone attends a survival school big or small isn't really a strong point in my mind. You can attend all the schools you want. But if you don't go home and practice (self educate) on your own, you will lose those skills or become very rusty.
The only difference between a self taught student and an instructor taught student is what I called "the golden nuggets" but even then I believe the average person is intelligent and can modify a skill to suit their own needs and desires.
To further elaborate. The intended goal of the video was to give some food for thought for those on the fence and to give a solution or confidence that they really don't need to attend a survival school to be successful at bushcraft. All I really care about is helping people learn to survive and make it out of an emergency situation. And if its self education from videos and books that help them or going to a school so be it.
Now devil's advocate here I would like to attend a school for the experience? Hell yes I would and I'm guessing you all know what instructors I would love to learn from. Learning from someone live in person through the EDI system is superior especially if you have questions or are struggling with something and need to be shown a different way for the same end goal. I'm not arrogant enough to believe that one can truly stop learning on a subject especially something dynamic as survival.
To end this ill wrap it up like this. For my personal situation I do plan on going to the pathfinder school later this year one way or another. Why? Because I think it would be a blast to do such. However personal time is limited. My wife and I work full time. We homeschool our six children and run a small farm. On top of all that we're both continuing our professional educations right now. So time off is a little tricky but can be done. Many people are in the same boat as us limited funding, time constraints, and at least for me a little hesitation to travel. This brings in the importance of self education. Either way thanks for watching and commenting.

@@loneoaksurvival That answer confirms what I suspected. When you go to the Pathfinder school, I hope you take away valuable new knowledge. But, please don't become compressed and limited by a discipline imposed on you by others. I like to remind myself that there are many paths, all leading to the same destination...and an individual's mind is their greatest tool. Independent thought and ingenuity serve well in the absence of schooling and training. In any event, keep posting videos, I think you have a good talent for that. Best of luck to you...

I've gone back and forth in attending a school or not. Personally unless it's a specialized school I'm not gonna go. A lot of this info can be found online for free
