I just culled an ISA Brown due to an infection that got fly strike and when I opened her up I found large deposits of old yokes inside her body, the size size of a baseball times two. I found this informative.

I’m sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, this happens quite frequently to production layers. They don’t have great longevity.

With EYP, e. coli likes to cultivate in the yolk. There's a pretty good study I came across which used activated charcoal to "suck up" the e. coli as well as dry up some of the fluid (more in terms of diarrhea rather than ascites.) Its not a guarantee, but it does seem to have a good effect on expelling some of the bacteria. Just throwing this out there for other chicken keepers who may be looking for help. I was administering this at night only, to ensure she had time throughout the day to ingest her food and anti-inflammatory. I was also treating with oregano and cinnamon additive in a poultry vitamin pack with the food, which I got from the farm store, as well as epsom-salt hot soaks (20 mins and blow-dry completely) and setting her on a hot water bottle (the old school kind.) Right now, doing better and passing yolk, but still in care.
Nothing is a sure-shot, but I didn't want to start loading her with a bunch of random things and also did not want to puncture her; in my chicken's case, she was otherwise rather perky, still eating and drinking on her own. If you have a poultry vet in your area, they have many more tools available but as you know, its not always accessible to get chickens treated.

Thank you for sharing. How did you administer the activated charcoal--mixed with water in a dropper or mix in food?

    • @circuit-maker7971
      @circuit-maker7971 Год назад +2

@@Kelly_Grey I mixed a small amount with some hydrated food and administered with syringe (no needle, obviously), basically just something with a bigger spout so the food could come out. Could probably do with a dropper by iteself with water. A little goes a long way!
I think all this kept her more comfortable, but she did ultimately pass in her sleep one night. :(

@circuit-maker I am sorry to hear that, thank you for sharing. My favorite hen has a firm mass in her abdomen for a few days, but still pooping, laying eggs, eating without problems. No water retention. We noticed her straining and that's how we found the mass. Not 100% sure what it is yet, but she's not egg bound and still energetic. Less than 1 yr old. Keeping a close eye on her, giving her Epsom salt soaks, gave her some activated charcoal mixed in water and food. Hoping for the best.

Water belly is due instead to heart congestion, I believe. Egg yolk peritonitis is different I understand. It is an ovulation problem.

I think this is my hen's problem. She looks fatter, is starting to wheeze a tiny bit, isn't eating much, has a soft squishy bottom and her poop the other day was yellow liquid like egg yolk. I will do the antiobiotic and attempt at draining liquid.

  • @sonofhibbs4425

Water belly, or ascities, is not the same thing as egg yolk peritonitis. Ascities is a liver issue. You can drain, but it will be reoccurring and eventually the chicken will die from it. When you drain, don’t aim to take it all out at ounce because it can cause shock. Aim to do it slowly. It will feel like a water ballon and when you put the syringe in, you should very easily be able to get liquid out. If you can’t- it’s not ascities.
Egg yolk peritonitis will cause a hard belly. It won’t feel like a water ballon. The hen will often have difficulty breathing or walking because the eggs are internally laid (they never came out) and it builds up to the point it presses on the hen’s major organs and nerves. They often will not eat very much, but drink more water. You might also notice the hen getting heavier and fatter in the lower abdomen, but her keel will feel prominent and even her face might look emaciated. As far as I know, there is not much that can be done for the hen except surgery from a vet. Even that is a 50/50 because chickens are prey animals- pain and fear can cause a quick response of death immediately after. (This is what occurred in two of my hens I took in for surgery). EYP too will eventually cause death. Sadly, it’s very common. If you opt for the surgery and you have a hen that still lays, you’ll have to get an implant to stop laying (basically birth control). An older hen might not lay so much or at all so that it doesn’t become a problem.

Whoops, I forgot to mention that ascities can happen alongside EYP. My main point was to explain they can be two different issues with different treatments.

Can this semi-hard yellow be softened, broken up or disolved?
I have a little hen and she has this hard mass in her abdomen.
She passed a lash egg a few weeks back, but this is like a hard chalky like substance which can be squeezed and smashed.
I injected some coconut oil into it last night 09*-08-2021, and she passed two little rocks.
I took her to the vet and he gave her a steroid, and antibotic, but she seems to be weakening very fast.
I have prayed and prayed for them.
I just lost one a few days ago and have lost many wyandottes to fluid in the abdomen which caused them to drown.
Please answer and help me if you can,
    Harlan

@@carolineshomestead2560 She got some and a steroid shot.
I let her sleep on my arm 09-10-2021 and when I got up she raised her head.
I picked my little love up and she threw her head back and died in my arms.
      My heart is shattered.
      Thanks for the reply.

It’s hard to say. Pooping yellow is egg yolk. If you give her antibiotics it will prolong her life most likely but her abdomen might not ever go back to normal.

So wait, I'm confused 😂does this hen in this video have egg yolk peritonitis or water belly? Is waterbelly (ascites) due to congestive heart failure and egg yolk peritonitis is due to an egg breaking or just the hen not making a shell? They are two different things but you treat the same way, but with EYP you also give abx after draining? I have a sick hen and I think she has one or the other but just making sure they are different but treatment is the same?

I believe I may have a hen that has this going on. Either this or salphingitis is what I am assuming.
I started her on fishmox yesterday. I also gave her a injection of LA-200. (I believe doing this saved a hen a few years ago that had a egg rupture inside. She was in VERY bad shape!) I don't normally give both antibiotics BUT I needed a kick start on something ASAP!
What dose of fishmox would you recommend?

Google penicillin and chicken dosage . It’s based off on lbs. However, it might be hard to find now with the FDA requiring a prescription for livestock.
