The newspaper image in the video is from when he received the medal, and the woman who gave it to him was the daughter of the late Thorleif Haug who was the previous bronze winner. In the same olympics Thorleif won two gold medals in cross country skiing and one in nordic combined, so it seems his family was ok with giving back a bronze medal.
the other was Thorleif Haug ... who also won two Olympic Gold Medals at the same winter Olympics So he probably wasn't put out to lose a Bronze, and had died in 1934
The guy who got the bronze originally had died. His widow gave the medal to Haugen. No one made her do it, he didn’t ask for it, she just felt it was the right thing to do.
Nah I hate it but the other medallists get to keep the medal and memories and all the glory In fact I think they should ramp up the drug cheating deterrant by fixing this: Keep all the drug test results secret until the day of the closing ceremony, then get ALL the medallists to line up before they enter the closing ceremony, and every now and then, someone says “nup, not you, this way sir” and they can’t get to go. And they’re carrying their medal so have to get stripped of it. Or they don’t even turn up in fear, and that outs them
I finished in 12th position in the first Manx Loaghtan Loaded 24 Hour Endurance Mountain Biking Event here on The Isle Of Man. 56.23 miles total, I think, from memory, I completed 17 laps of the forestry MTBike course, and even drove home to listen to the rock show on the radio and drove in the next day for a, 8am ish start, though, technically, it was a non stop ish, 24 hour event. There were only nineteen teams and solo riders. You're a better teller and relayer of stories than I am, though. 😮
The oldest is probably one of the nonsense sports like sitting on a boat or sitting on a horse. Imagine the youngest is in gymnastics, especially as China has been accused of lying about how old they are.

Great context, thanks!
Hannah Fry could read me the telephone book (if we still have these) and I would still find her immensely charming.
Right!?? 💯
Eel what a slippery experience. Never forget to finish what you started Fry.. We are waiting.
"Look at my medal!"
"I wouldn't go jumping to any conclusions, buddy."
Your are one of a kind. Keep on

I think he was dead too so yeah probably not too bothered 😅
Interesting fact, thanks! Ps I love the shiny red lips brooch :-)
The most mindblowing part for me, is that there are people who trawl over sports data from decades ago, looking for errors.
Ty Cobb had the Major League Baseball record with 4,191 base hits. Except one game was counted twice, and he only had 4,189.
Hi Hannah-good to see You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The daughter of the Norwegian jumper presented Haugen the actual bronze 🥉 medal that Thorleif Haug had received in error in 1924.
The last thing Hannah says isn't quite true. Torleif Haug, who lost his bronze medal (post mortem), won three gold medals in 1924.
Facts should never get in the way of a good story. It’s now 2024, we gave up facts long ago

We want your medal back

More of that insidious bubble-popping by mathematicians.
Are you certain that _favorite_ is the word you want to use?
I'd imagine she'd use 'favourite', to be fair
Anders Haugen? Obviously he is Norwegian..
Yep, born in Telemark
Maths fail lol
I wonder how old the oldest ever medal winner actually was? And the youngest?

@@drunkenhobo5039 You've never been horse riding, I take it? Because it's a hell of a lot more than just sitting on a horse
