Josh said this song is about his first experience with LSD at his friend's house (I'm guessing is named Paul)… right as his friend's parents and sister came home
Yep... good lyric indeed. I also like "you've got a hole in you I never saw". Such a crazy song, both musically and lyrically. A favorite queens tune for sure. Btw... nice profile image. I recognized it immediately. Pelican is a great band and I love that artwork.
“Monsters In The Parasol” was released as the third single off of Rated R. The song describes, in odd details, frontman Josh Homme’s first LSD trip as a teenager. The song was originally a Green Monarchs song (originally entitled “Monster In The Parasol”) that appeared on the Desert Sessions Volume 4.
It looks like she's running a protection racket for all the business owners. One of the paid-up owners had their puppy stolen. When she walked up she recognised the puppy. The lame guy along for the ride is one that gets beaten up for the puppy as the others are more street savvy. Shoe shop owner ends up booting up the woman, just like any 1920s gangster visiting a business for both protection and service. The woman who's pet is the beagle receives the puppy back. Some 1920s gangsters described themselves as community workers so we're partial to a good deed here and there even though they enforced the protection racket ruthlessly.
Brilliant video. Subtle hints of what is going on throughout it. A few of the more subtle ones are when the bar tender pays, he checks his watch. Also, when she walks past the wedding shop you can see a SLIGHT smile when the video cuts back. When the kids are running down the alley and she beats the shit out of them they're looking back where they came from, and there is a pet store sign in that direction. She/he's a benevolent figure throughout the entire video. Fun video to analyze.
the video seems a travestite who kinda rules the mafia neighboor, ive seen an analysis pointing the dog is given to a chinese lady, and some chinese eat dogs. The band probably comented the clip in interviews
I remember watching this at the age of 19 and being confused as to the plot. Now 39, with all those years in between… I still don’t understand the video, at all. I shall continue to chalk it up to the MTV style of video that has nothing to do with the lyrics. But I love the band, especially that album. I even know the drum parts by muscle memory for each song nearly wearing the CD out.
Every single time i ride in my work van. I play this song. Just imagine all the stuff you see day in and day out on the route. Youll notice anything different quickly
In an interview he talks about how this song is about an acid trip he had with his friend Paul . "Paul's dad is warped and bubbling" describes the effects clearly
The guitar riffs in this song are tasty as hell. Also the video is hilarious. I'm horrible for laughing at the part when he beats the crap out out the kid and takes the dog.
I can't believe I never noticed the whispering in the song!!! Makes it that much more crazy!!! Nevermind that it's about what they are experiencing on LSD!
Listen to the Desert Sessions version of this track, which pre-dates the Rated R release. The voice in the background speaks instead of whispering like it does here.
I saw this video years ago when I was in elementary school. I forgot what channel it was, but it was an American TV station. I knew it was QOTSA. Finally. Good song. No wonder I remembered it til this day.
I think the most insightful thing i could offer up, is I think he/she is like a female version of a Sopranos-style gangster. She takes protection money from the locals, and shows favour for some of them (giving the lady the dog) so many of them love her. But like any gangster, there is unsavoury stuff going on behind the scenes, i.e. she takes what she wants using violence (beating up the guy for the dog).
I feel like I'm living in another era lol Like. Being able to watch this on TV, DVD, VHS. Then it getting ported to RUclips in such a poor quality. Like this shit is like 20+ years old. Where were we when we first heard this song?
QOTSA is just the last great band in rock history. Among the greatest. I would love your input on our last video from our first album. It got the attention of one of my heroes Joe Bouchard (ex bass player founding members of BÖC) who is following us on Soundcloud but returns from people who likes same music is always the best. If you have just 3 minutes to listen and a bit more to comment, that would mean the world to me. Keep rockin' ruclips.net/video/i1fVRW6z3n4/видео.html and Happy new year
Nhaars and you wonder why we constantly kick your ass? [sorry... sorry... i hate the english.. and i'm one of em. nobody, and i DO MEAN NOBODY hates the english as much as the english... just like nobody hates the french as much as french women!]
+Nhaars Is there actually something like "the best song from the album"? Because i've never thought of something like that regarding any band i've listened to. Just saying.
this video begs 4 a great, fun or at least reflexing ending that never comes very stressfull hope it doesn't make me dislike da song cause rated r it0s a very nice album
best part is when Nick is hit by the car and Josh just laughs and runs away
That's the funniest shit! His face is all "OH FUCK!" before he books it. lmfao
How did you know?
True dat lmao
my ears were waiting for nick to yell "i dont even know what, im doing here" at the end of the video.
APAL880 and "I'll cut your pretty face" lol
YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAHH
same thats an instinct at this point
Lol
Nick getting hit by the car, and Josh proceeding to laugh is the best! And then running off in fear is hysterical!
"I seen some things I thought I never saw
Covered in hair"
Man... that's such a good lyric... can be taken so many ways. Beautiful.
It's about Paul's sister turning bf into a werewolf
Josh said this song is about his first experience with LSD at his friend's house (I'm guessing is named Paul)… right as his friend's parents and sister came home
Genuine Question: Why do you think the hair lyric is so beautiful? In which ways can it be taken? lol.
Yep... good lyric indeed. I also like "you've got a hole in you I never saw". Such a crazy song, both musically and lyrically. A favorite queens tune for sure.
Btw... nice profile image. I recognized it immediately. Pelican is a great band and I love that artwork.
I'm pretty sure its about vaginas in general.

My History Teacher showed me this Band. and now i love Queen's Of the Stone Age
Cool teacher I think.
And the rest was history.
And how's now?
Great memories watching this song past midnight on MTV while I was in college.

The beagle pup was such a touch

True fans start singing.. 'yeah yeah yeah yeah'.. right as this song ends

The part when he sees the dress like "oow that's pretty" then shifts back to action mode kills me
😂
this is THAT music video that you image of yourself in the street when u are listening music with the earphones
Oro puro, amo este disco!
you 've got a monster in your parasooooooool
That is ME while walking on the street listening to an awesome song like THIS!!!
I don't know about you guys, but QOTSA rocks harder and better than 95%, or more, of all shit out there
That Atwater is gone. Nice to see it again - so many old stores and familiar faces. A tune, a caper, and a Verve parody too. Wonderful!
what's the verve parody part
@@maxbouvattei think the bittersweet symphony music video

Seen these guys last night in Detroit. Played this tune and killed it. Still doin it after all these years. Josh was the same as usual!
this video is super relatable

Curious, how did you come across this song?
This is real music. QOTSA rock!!!
This looks like the same set from Pulp Fiction where Butch is introduced. Zed is dead baby.
"does he look like a bitch" well actually yeah
It looks like the same street from Reservoir Dogs where Mr Pink was being chased by cops.
Zed is still dead.
