@@brettsenzer5902 I mean, in the studio you should be hitting your cymbals very lightly pretty much no matter what, so it's less about knowing how to hit them hard without breaking them and more about directing your power to the kick and snare.
I really enjoy seeing the instruments being playing in sync with the studio recording of the song. It just shows how extremely intricate Dream Theater songs are.
Mike always takes command of his kits like it’s a part of his own body. So comfortable, so familiar and just owning it. Like he could just close his eyes most of the time because he knows every drum and cymbal so well. He makes it look so easy when in reality it’s crazy difficult
Thousands of notes n strokes over this nearly 9 minutes piece and while him play all of them realizing that if he repeated a second run thru it he would pretty much perfectly accurately repeat all those thousands of moves. Amazing.
In my opinion, there's not been a "bad album" from them. So whatever year an album comes out from them, I can already say it's probably the album of the year, at least to me... My favorite band, I want to be like that someday... I just gotta find the right people to take with me. Not saying I am as good as them, but like with anyone, it takes years and years to get that good.
@@elpulento7205 el gordo hoglan es bueno pero es incomparable a Mike portnoy, es unos de los 3 mejores del mundo, por lejos. Pondría en el mismo podio a Neil pert y John bonham

Mike portnoy from me is the amazing drummer, only he for the metal progresivo, he's times in order, only he and aaron kitcher is my Best drummer Whit my likes
1:11 at .50x speed hits damn hard Also, if you watch that fill at 2:30 in slow mo you can see that he hits the second rack tom in the video when in the audio he hits the snare. Each of those triplet runs starts and ends with a snare hit, but in the video he's only hitting the snare at the end of each run. I don't think he's playing the toms at al in the audio recording right there.
In that sense you can call everything a piece of bullshit. Not like the financial / business world isn't made of politics and bullcrap stories. Portnoy is a kickass drummer.
im not too sure about what you mean by the cymbal he's riding on the first part of the intro but i can tell u what hihats are hihats are those 2 cymbals mounted on top of each other, one facing downwards, the other facing upwards. You can control the open/close of the pair by a foot pedal. It's the thingy u have on the left side of the main snare (or the right side of the snare for left-sided setups...lol)
What happened to the video of the full band performing this in studio? Not the two minute clip that's interrupted by petrucci talking from the documentary, there used to be a whole ass live in studio video...
I tried to cover this, with my own kit. and I though, hmm, Maybe I should give it a try. Since It looked so easy, and I am so stupid, to think it's so bloody hard to learn this, when you first give it a try. :P Mike Portnoy forever!
I love Portnoy, unbelievable drummer, the only people that beat him on drums from the top of my head is Chris Pennie and Tony Royster Jr. (best drummer in the world, even if he is Jay Z's drummer).
i think it's coz every album they release is in someway meant to be different to the previuos, that's how they are. It's good coz they get to experiment with different things, some heavier, some more virtuous
Came back for this... never disappointed.
This is one of their hardest songs for drums, guitar, and bass. Why isn't it more popular?
Cause people cant tell a masterpiece when they hear it \m/
@@Longdogsilva True.
because it's written on paper. Composed. That's not rock n roll.
@@nothadnotbad Indeed. Thank God it isn't.
And also the groove is catchy as fuck
I love how his body language shows how much fun he is having while playing! It makes the song even more exciting
one of the Greatest Heavy Metal Drummers Period!!!
Mike Portnoy and Chris Adler are my favorites c:
Dave Lombardo too
Mike is a God. Dave and Adler.... sorry
He showed a TON of love for Neil Peart when he passed away . They must have been real bros.
Facts
Beside Dave Lombardo, Joey Jordison and the one and only
*Lars Ulrich*
1:10 I love how he looks over and gave the “what do you think of that?” Look
The best drummer of all times. Ok?.
I never realized he was ghosting on the snare at 3:40

MP is back in the battery my friends, in this year of our lord 2023.
I'm still impressed that with all this power he didn't destroy the equipment!

Hit your cymbals correctly and they won’t crack
Mangini uses heavier sticks and his cymbals last years

Mike Portnoy is the best drummer in the world.... he is damn good!!!!!1
He is having fun playing stuff that is hard af
Mike always takes command of his kits like it’s a part of his own body. So comfortable, so familiar and just owning it. Like he could just close his eyes most of the time because he knows every drum and cymbal so well. He makes it look so easy when in reality it’s crazy difficult
Dad showed me this about 8 years ago come back to watch it every few years, mikes the goat
He has so much energy in prog drumming, it hard. It's easier to have that musicality in funk and stuff, but Portnoy has a lot of feeling.
He makes all his drum work look effortless. Almost like it's too east for him! Still the best!
Alright one more time ..mike is the uncontested heavy weight champion in heavy metal drumming ...takes the gold
I love when he fit the beat with the main riff. Mike has definitely moved the drums from the 'kitchen" to the "living room".
I thought it would be, I mean, he is one of the greatest drummers in history, next to Neil Peart. I would hope he can play this whole song perfectly.
Don’t forget about Dave Weckl and Virgil Donati
love the power at 4:00
the conga sound at the beginning followed by that keyboard riff makes the whole part have a sinister and evil vibe to it
Conga? You don't know shit about congas.
Sounds more like a vibraslap than a conga.
Amazing, stunning...love watching Mike play. Truly awesome!
Love this album. Parts of it are like a B movie horror flick.
Thousands of notes n strokes over this nearly 9 minutes piece and while him play all of them realizing that if he repeated a second run thru it he would pretty much perfectly accurately repeat all those thousands of moves. Amazing.
Mike portnoy is the best drummer of all times
MP nails this so perfect - it is just great. And when You look LunaPark dvd, MM is far away...:)
it's portnoy's song, duh
his style is so great. as if he is conducting a classical music concert and his kit is the band.
The best drummer of dream theater ever

Fuck these sessions were legendary. Always have to click back on when they pop up. Makes me want to play!!!
If there ever was a technically master of his instrument as well as with the greatest "feeling"
currently pinching a log enjoying this gem
there doing what they want to and their enjoying it. if you dont like it dont listen to it
There used to be a version of this that had video of all the band members, but it seems to have disappeared. Does anyone know what happened?
theres anyone equal....

Mikey is god on drums ..best drummer ever ...the,guy is blessed
mike portnoy is a damn good drummer.
Sooooo much better than the drum machine on loop that they have now ... mangini makes sound ....Portnoy makes MUSIC
Oh please, fuck you too man

Wow. Couldn't have said it any better. I'm stealing that one brah.
yea I agree, Portnoy has way more feel and groove in his playing

the song is soooooooooooooo cool an mike portnoy is a god
His movements are so uniform, every hit or strike looks almost the same, which makes him look so damn good when he plays. lol
Tanto tiempo que salió el Systematic Chaos? como pasa el tiempo! sin dudas The Dark Eternal Night tiene el sello del gran Portnoy.
It’s the mixing of styles for me
Mike is magic.
Most Important and best drummer 3-DVD set set I own
of course is was put together from different clips, thats the studio record, an studio records are always in different parts...
