It is a fun fishery, you never know what the next cast is going to bring. I rarely come up with nothing, if only a couple of reddies or a carp. Always something fun going on, with the chance of the odd bigger Yellowbelly and Cod showing up to play, along with jumbo Reddies. The fish Ben and I caught this day were great fun, fit and full of fight.
We got a couple of nice carp that afternoon also. Was a great session. Right in the heart of the National Capital, surrounded by all the monuments, it is a fantastic place to fish. One of the most consistent redfin spots on the lake also. I spend a lot of time at this location.
It is a great way to spend time with your kids. The young lad in this video is a close friend's kid, I fished with her (his mum) 30 years ago, now I fish with him and his dad a fair bit. My kids get out with me a bit, but are a bit older and doing their own thing often now. Many happy memories taking them out, and it got them into nature away from the TV and computers for a while. If you have any questions, drop me a line. I will help as I can.
Most days on the lake are a good day. It is a wonderful place and many just take it for granted. Amazing how many tell me, 'You won't catch a fish in there!"
Cheers mate. These are our Aussie native Perch so a fair bit different to the European and American perches. Great fish, good eating and solid fighters.
Thanks, Yellow Belly are one of my favourite targets. Will be busy checking out your channel later, will let you know when I swing by. I think it was Kohl, or maybe Yank yesterday, who sent me along.
Hey, thanks.Just saw this comment. Sorry for the late reply. Yeah. I do a bit of yebbly fishing, but don't post a lot of the videos because the locations are a bit iffy to publicise. I could become very unpopular very fast with a few of the locals. I tend therefore to stick to carp and redfin video with the natives only in generic locations or unidentified locations.
Perch is a bit of a misnomer with these fish. They are not actually related to the Perch (Perca) family of fish, like your yellow perch. These are a native fish, which got the name perch because our settlers were not very imaginative. Locally we call them Yellowbelly, in South Australia they are known as Callop. Golden Perch is accepted all over. They are from the Macquaria family which also contains the Macquarie Perch, Estuary perch and Australian BASS, which of course, are not a bass. And the Silver Perch is actually not part of this family, they are Bidyanus bidyanus and are actually related to the grunters. If I have not confused you enough, the iconic Murray Cod is not a cod...Then we come to the Perca, which Redfin Perch (Perca fluviatilis) are the only represented species in Australia, imported from Europe and known locally as Reddies, Redfin, English Perch or European Perch, interchangeably. The Yellow Perch is Perca flavescens, related and similar to the Redfin but not reaching the same size. White Perch are not perch... You get the idea.
Hi, great to see you here mate. You are quite right, it is an awesome fishery. Provides me and the others plenty of fun and a heap of variety. 2 large carp were also part of our total Sunday afternoon.
These are not bad samples but the Goldens do get a lot bigger - I think around 15 kilo, not many that size around anymore except in aquaculture facilities. Would love to hook one, what a beast that would be! Biggest I have caught was 6.8 kilo. The Murray Cod, they get big, 100 kilo is not unheard of. Those things are beasts of fish. Ben, the young fella in the thumbnail, gets a few nice ones, he got an 18 kilo jobby last season. He had not caught a fish before last January when his mum asked me if I could take him out. Just a few tips and now he gets great fish every trip. He put in the work and has come up trumps.
They are great fun. One of my favourite targets. They get a little big for pan fish, at about 30 pound for a big girl. Most are a bit smaller, legal ones are 30 cm. These were good sized ones, but not huge.

It was a fantastic afternoon. Lovely weather and my favourite fish. And good company. Could you ask for more? A couple of carp, one each for me and Ben rounded the afternoon out nicely.
LOL, not as bad as the gill spike. The first one got me good when she flipped out of my hand. my finger bled the rest of the afternoon. The teeth are not so bad as I don't try and lift the fish, just hold them by the mouth. Cod are much worse. Them I might even wrap my hand before lipping them.
@@AndrewFishman there used to be needle nose style pliers with thick rubber cushioning at the teeth specifically for catch and release... haven't seen them for a few years.... but still better then your fingers! Lol
There are specialised lip grips now available. I have a set, but never remember to have them on hand when I actually catch a fish, lol. I have used them once in three or four years since I got them. After dealing with barracuda, mackerel, shark, tailer and flathead, the little needles of the yellow belly are really not scary :) Wouldn't be lipping any of those others!!! :O
The hooks actually came off the lure. I felt bad up until Ben looked down and said, "Wait, the hooks are gone!". Some things are beyond my control. She was certainly one of the better goldens I have seen from the lake.
THey are great fun. They hit like a truck, but fight like a brick lol. After the first few headshakes are over, it is pretty much a formality, but those first moments are intense.
The beast shook the double hook off the back of the lure. I felt bad until Ben said "Oh, the hook is gone!". Some things are beyond me to control, his lure, his bad... but i thought we had her. She was a lovely fish. Oh, well. It would have been photos and back into the water for her any way:) Love Yellowbelly? Oh yeah! Smashing lures and fighting hard. The 2 carp we got that afternoon were good fish also. Just thought I would put up the 3 perch together. They were certainly 3 quality fish, all fit, in great condition, healthy and well fed up.
Great video buddy if I can use some footage I might use it slightly out of context for the fun aspect but it will be done with a lot of respect and love and will give a shout out and link in the description

Depends what you are chasing. So, I will give a bit of a run down. WORMS - Golden perch, redfin, cod, carp. Worms are a great all around bait, but you do tend to pick up a lot of carp and rat reddies, especially in the East Basin and along the Carillon shoreline. As you move down Central Basin and into the Black Mountain Peninsular area, you will start to pick up more natives and bigger redfin. Down the Scrivener arm, from either the Lady Denman side or the Governor Generals foreshore across Scriviner you pick up some nice cod. Western Park hold some really nice carp, and moving around past the Yacht club are some nice native holes. YABBIES - live: Yellow belly, Redfin and Cod dead or tails: Carp Yebblies Reddies Cod. Yabbies can be caught from the lake, using drop nets in areas clear of rocks or a large aquarium or hand bait net and a sting and meat bait line in rockier areas. SHRIMP - Redfin Yellowbelly Carp Cod 2 types of shrimp are common locally. Small glass shrimp and the larger long claw macrobacium. Both will be caught as bycatch if targeting yabbies with a drop net. Possibly the best yellowbelly bait in the Bidgee and local lakes. A smallish hook (No2) and a running sinker or float rig is deadly with a couple of long claws fished down between the old rowing club and Black Mountain Peninsular under the willows along the rock walls. CHEESE - Fished from Commonwealth avenue through to the Dam, this will pick up nice cod. Other species will take it, but cod seem most common on it. Likewise, used in other areas, it will pick up fish, but the Western part of the lake and Molongolo arm seem to have a greater proportion of natives. BREAD - My go to Carp bait, it will also pick up other species. I have caught Cod, Yebblies, trout, Redfin on bread, not that there are any trout in the lake any more. I usually throw out a bread bait and fish a lure, or throw out a bread bait and another bait, but there is usually a bread bait out there. The method I use with bread is explained in this video - ruclips.net/video/eJ7SPmKcw54/видео.html CORN - Also very effective for carp, and the others will be occasional by catches. Other baits such as mudeyes, powerbait and crickets are very good, but harder to come by or more expensive. Fin fish and forgs are not allowed to be used for bait. My preferred baits for species - Yellowbelly - Shrimp, Yabby, Worms Redfin - Worms, shrimp, yabby Cod - Yabby SCRUB worms shrimp Carp - Bread, Corn, Worms Hope this gives you an idea of what to use and where. I am happy to answer any questions you have. If you can tell me where you are fishing, and what you hope to target, I can be more specific about rigs and methods. Trout, carp and redfin, although trout are not considered so, and their number dropped dramatically in a drought we had a few years back. 10 years with very little rain and very hot temperatures. dead or tails: Carp Yebblies Reddies Cod. Yabbies can be caught from the lake, using drop nets in areas clear of rocks or a large aquarium or hand bait net and a sting and meat bait line in rockier areas.
SHRIMP - Redfin Yellowbelly Carp Cod
2 types of shrimp are common locally.
The method I use with bread is explained in this video - ruclips.net/video/eJ7SPmKcw54/видео.html
CORN - Also very effective for carp, and the others will be occasional by catches.
Other baits such as mudeyes, powerbait and crickets are very good, but harder to come by or more expensive. Fin fish and forgs are not allowed to be used for bait.
My preferred baits for species -
Yellowbelly - Shrimp, Yabby, Worms
Redfin - Worms, shrimp, yabby
Cod - Yabby SCRUB worms shrimp
Carp - Bread, Corn, Worms
Hope this gives you an idea of what to use and where. I am happy to answer any questions you have. I’ve las Redfin up to 2.3lbs or 1.04 kilo but then buys must be getting on for three!!
Yeah a couple of kilo redfin are reasonably common, my biggest just under 3 kilo. They like the warmer water we have all year around. No freeze, no real slow down on their feeding or growth. Winter they school in big numbers of large fish. Good fun if you can find a school.
This video is another local angler on my local lake, this is a fairly typical session if you find them. ruclips.net/video/1Dp218K3Tko/видео.html
