- ***This is a re upload of my video, since youtube gave the copyright to someone else and would not give it to me, even after I disputed it. I deleted the other video and have put this one up now.
**Note - I will be doing a follow up on how my pool is now - 2 years later.
This video is of my project of compLetely resurfacing and retiling my pool. I had been quoted $15,000 by two different companies to resurface the pool. I decided to do it myself. After researching about pool resurfacing for many weeks and weighing my options of epoxy paint or plaster. I chose plaster. Epoxy paint can and will peel after time. I wanted it done where it would last.
I found a material and company Sider Crete. www.sider-crete..., though at that time they were Sider Oxydro.
I tried to hire people over and over again to help me. I even advertised on Craigslist and called many people. But it seemed no one wanted to help me no matter what as it was too difficult a job. So... I ended up doing it myself. The only two things I did not do myself was grind down the old tile (though I had started using an impact drill to get it out totally), and putting the tiles on.
Other than that, I grouted the tiles and resurfaced it myself. It is actually a three person job.
There were many many steps to redoing the pool and it took me one and half months to finish it. I spent 12+ hours a day in the pool. Also the person who put the tiles in, made a mess and spilled mortar all over the pool surface. It took me one week just to clean the mess out of the pool that he had created.
I had to grind down the mortar besides grind down under the tiles due to excess mortar under them.
But the whole cost was approximately $3500 compared to the $15000 I was quoted.
My pool needed to be retiled and refinished badly.
I did this project in September to October 2011.
I have done many projects around my home, including laying wood floors myself, plumbing, electrical, laying tile and redoing bathrooms just to name a few projects.
I learned how to do it from researching on the internet and reading about it all.
It shows a woman CAN DO what needs to be done herself! We CAN accomplish what we put our minds to!
Hope you enjoy the video. I will put more of my before and after projects on youtube.
Fun little tidbit - 8/9/13 -
A production company contacted me and will be using it in a movie "Wish I were Here" with Zach Braff and Kate Hudson. Zach Braff will be sitting at a table by his pool watching my video on an IPad through youtube, as he wants to resurface his pool himself in the movie. He will be watching how I did it. They will show a portion of the video in the movie. No, I am not getting paid anything for it, but it is fun anyway.
I just wanted to share that fun little tidbit. The movie comes out next year, September 2014.
You freaking ROCK! I am also a woman who has a pool and there are lazy people who own companies who never even show up for an estimate. I stumbled on your video to research how hard this would be to do it as a DIY. It looks like it is hard but not impossible! Thanks for the encouraging video!
I have been in contracting for over 25 years and I am now I the process of doing the exact job you did. I have to say I'm very impressed. All of the work alone is no easy task. You should be very proud of yourself. Great Job.

What a great job you did! I am a 74 year old Viet Nam Vet. My wife and I are in the process of our own pool restoration. We have an older Marcite liner on our pool. None of the pool companies will repair ours as it was made with asbestos. So we are doing it ourselves. Wish us luck.
Good luck!
Hi! Wow - I am so so Impressed! I am also of the breed where I just say - to hell with it & it can't be that bad! Then there is a long period of "what did I get myself into!" & then the "MY GOD!" - I DID IT! :) We are out there!!!! :)
Great job Sherrie. My wife and I do all of our own projects for two reasons- we like the work and the sense of accomplishment and we like to save the money in labor. You have encouraged me to now convince her to do our pool ourselves.
Sherrie… Absolutely fantastic! I was focusing on the pool repair itself. I didn’t realize it was a woman doing this job until the end. Thank you for the graceful and powerful display of equality. Conversely, this guy (below) who rambles on about his theories of issues and his negative commentary has only benefited us with yet another example. That being, man or woman, there will always be some little mind with a big ego. Thankfully, as can be seen in the many positive commentaries, he is a small representation of ignorance in our wonderful “do-it-yourself communities”.
Sherrie, you are a star. Looks like a thorough job, with careful prep. Thanks for sharing some of your "lessons", as well.
I am soooooo impressed. I found this on Pinterest and assumed it was a guy the whole time. The more I watched, the more I thought “there’s no way i could do this by myself”, and then.......ta-daaaa! Of course I can. Love it
Sherrie! Kudos to you for the can-do attitude AND for doing it! It's fantastic! Thank you for showing me that I CAN attempt this job myself.
nothing a woman can't do when she puts her mind to it ...great job! your pool looks absolutely great and refreshing!...I like your panache and spirit you go girl.
You are such a motivation Sherrie. Yes women can do things for ourselves. Great Job!!!
The one thing I've learned is the best motivator to do it yourself is to get estimates from other people.
no joke!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible job Sherrie! I admire your determination. You are an inspiration for any do-it-yourselfer
Great job...i know completely how you feel and why you do it yourself. I have been in the same situation many times. No one seems to want to work or work very hard. That is why I have installed a metal roof on my home, removed tile and re-riled my home and re-did our kitchen. I am now re-doing the pool Great video!
Just finished watching ur video. You did a great job!!!! I recently drain my pool and looking to replaster it. I will definitely checking sider-crete products. Thank you for sharing. You inspire me. I’m also a woman, mother of 4 and a grandmother of 6. Thank you!
Thank you for posting this!!! my husband and I purchased an older home with an older pool and hate to spend the big bucks on something we know we can tackle. This was so helpful. Beautiful pool!!!
Nicely done. Nothing better than challenging yourself to something that other people want too much money to do, or either just don't want to do for what you're offering.
WOW! That’s one hell of an undertaking. Congratulations on a superb job. Your pool looks amazing. Well done. We are in the final phase of our pool remodel (water chemistry balancing and brushing), so I know what a huge job it was with three different teams of subcontractors. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. ❤️
Ambitious and a beautiful job !!! You must be proud of yourself !!!!
I am there with you sister! Hard headed and determined with a head full of commonsense aaaaaand youtube!
WOW just WOW that is so admirable being a woman that is very independent i like to take on things that most would not this was a huge project and it came out beautifully done i wish i had means to do it myself great job!
Hey Sherrie, excellent job. Thank-you. I have emptied our pool and cleaned it as the water has been pumped out. Thank you for mentioning the diamond grinder. I've been using a drill and a steel wire brush, but it's kind of slow and go. I was starting to think, I would simply put mortar over the rough stuff and save the entire step of trowling the mortar before putting on the tiles. :) Wow 10X with the power washer??? Our pool looks ok, I may save the resurfacing step and just re-do the tile. Last time 13 years ago, I had it re-plastered and tiled for $7,500. That's why now, Ima doit myselfer again!!
Wow! I'm very impressed. You should feel very proud of what you've accomplished. I have my resurfacing budgeted in for a company to do it but after seeing your video, I'm going to have to seriously consider tackling the job myself. Thank you for posting your video!
Wow! Excellent work. I know the feeling of having big projects and your "buddies" not coming over to help. I'm looking to do my pool resurface myself as well. Thanks for the video!
Okay, Sherrie, we're five years later. How did the Sider-crete hold up? Thanks and great job.
Curious...did it hold up?
Any update ?
Update please!
Please let us know, id love to do this
Update please!
Very nice!!!! Getting ready to do the same to ours!!!! I'm researching now... oh boy! what a task!!
dude. fck that shit. you just inspired me to not fill my pool but fix it. i had 9 contractors to come and quote. still waiting. thanks for the motivation man. you are the best
Amazing video. I am doing my pool myself as well.. I am 1 week in and I have tile demoed out and about to install.. I am just going to paint over. My plaster is in great shape..I got lucky. I gotta say... After a few beers and some hours of work you do get tired if you're alone.
You go girl!!! Im about to do mine!!! Thanks for sharing.
Great job Sherrie! Something to be proud of for sure.
In new concrete pool construction a polished pool surface is considered the premiere finish. In an old pool if the plaster is sold and does not need patching then it is relatively straight forward and can be done in a day by two men on an average pool and give you an incredible finish.
Thank you for the tip about Sider-Crete (I'm about to dive into this myself and was looking for good pool plasters) - and congrats on a great job!
Looks good brother. I already know how hard it is to take on big projects like that by yourself. That's been the story of my life since I bought my house. Hey but your pool looks like the pros did it. Hey if you pulled this off there ain't nothing you can't really do. Again awesome job. Enjoy
Great job!!! I have the same mindset you have. If I can't get someone to help me...I do it myself although you have really done a lot more than I thought I could. You encourage me. I do all my own wall prepping, wallpapering, tiling, painting and some minor carpentry and electrical. Thank you for sharing. Our pool needs resurfacing badly, too. You inspire me....:)
good for you , well done! we women can do it ourselves, I've been cleaning and painting my gunite pool for years by myself. my pool looks a lot like yours, except it hasn't been replastered, your pool looks beautiful!
Great job! I had no idea until the end that you were a woman. I assumed the whole time this was a man in the video. I love that you were able to do this yourself! I wish I had the know how to perform renovations like this on my own home.
Thank you for posting this. I am getting ready to apply Sider Crete this weekend and am pleased to see how nice it looks. My preparation was similar to yours, although I had to remove urethane paint. Nicely done!
I am super impressed!! We are needing to do ours, was told anywhere from 10,000. to resurface....yikes!!! We only paid 18k to have it built in 2004, so was checking to see how hard to diy. So this was rolled on? For some reason I thought it would be like regular plaster, a put on by trowel? You did a fantastic job lady, and one you can be proud to say you diy!!
She never make resurfacing with diamond Brite and never used de onecoat primer,,was a cleaning and painting with epoxy paint and is possible stay good por 8 or 10 years
you did a great job! Amazing! If u need it, will sponsor a pool light! Girls help girls!
I just love the color of the water in a white pool! I saw the movie and congrats on the job. My daughter and I are going to be doing this this spring. Ours however is a hybrid pool with fiberglass surround and concrete bottom. We painted 3 years ago and it peeled around the water edge(above water.) We hired someone and ended up finishing it ourselves as you said, no one wants to work on redo's unless they are making a killing.
I'm redoing my pool now. I've done it several times in the last 10 years but that's because my pool had been painted originally and so I just keep on doing that. But I have all the steps down. Drain it, pressure wash it. Use my grinder to go over the entire pool. Acid wash the pool. Rinse the pool go over a few places generally with the grinder. One more pressure wash. Let it dry, Mask it off and spray it. But I can say that this is the last time I'll be doing it. I'm having pebble tec put on before the next job. Right now the guys are about 18 months out believe it or not. I did wonder about something. Every place I've looked to see how they replaster a pool they always chip the old pool with numatic tools. That's a huge job. You didn't have any photos at all of how you applied the new surface. I wondered how you did it. Also, now that it's been a long time I wonder how it held up. Oh, lastly I can relate to your grout issue. This time the first thing that I did was to use my grinder and remove the old grout from the tile. Then I regrouted, half the pool. Waited until the next day and used 120 grit paper to sand it off. Wow. What a job. It took me several hours to get it off. I'm glad that was the shallow end. Live and learn. Today I'll go ahead and grout the last half, but this time, I'm going to sponge it off as I go. Lesson learned.
Great job.that inspired me, same kind of pool, same issues.
Wow Sherrie!! I am so impressed and so proud of you!!! That is an amazing job, well done. You are an inspiration. We've been staring at a pool we weren't permitted to fill because of the drought. It's time. Thank you for posting this. I feel like it's doable now.
You go girl. Pool looks amazing.
If we compare auto body repair, walls repairs, wood repair etc. Almost the same. But pool repairs are totally different because there is 1: water 2: chemicals 3: pressure. If you remove old plaster you will be able to see crack or oxidation on the gunite frame bars etc. When just paint over the old material plaster is not good idea... good luck!
Brilliant job, well done !
What an amazing woman ! Bravo
Great job! Amazing that you did most of it alone. Two thumbs up! Watching your video has given me confidence to do my own.
You did a fantastic job. You should be very proud of your hard work. I'm curious how things have held up over the years and if there was anything in hindsight or now that you would do differently. Peace
I can't believe you tackled that on your own. Fantastic job!!!
Nice work!!! I think this is my fall project....
looks great. I think i used the same glass tile too. After the winter much of it had fallen off and was a mess. uggg I live in new england so assume waterline came up and froze right on the tile. Wondering if I kept water line down would have helped.
You did a fantastic job
Of course women can do things and more than fix a hole pool.
I don't know you but I'm so proud of you.
🙏🙌🙏🙌🙏🙌🙏💪💪💪💪💪
I wish you can see mine. It's exactly like your and I'm having the same problem of leak. They said it was the skimmer, other said it's the main drain. I decide to do what you did. Repair it by my own. I'm dealing with that right now.
A little bit of help may be good 😁😁😁😁
I would like to send you photos so you can see it.
32 X 16 /// 7' deep and is exactly like yours. Hoping to hear about you soon, before I start to repair my pool to hear a little advice from you.
The plaster failed after only 7 months. I think the article said something about unaliving herself
Wow that was an awesome job. I love your tenacity to get things done...
Nice video. I'm about to attempt it myself. I am confused as to how long I can let the plaster sit before refilling. Most say fill it right away.
great project bud, I have a smaller pool that I want to completely tile block construction, laid on there sides, 9" thick walls then rendered, need to waterproof it, the tile with glass looks like I will have to do it myself also
Wow you did an amazing job congratulating 👏👏👏👍
Awesome job Sherrie. Thank's for sharing .
Well done Sherrie. Great video. Shame no action shots of you working. I hope you and your family get many years out of the pool
That is an amazing job! I am sure you can build a house from scratch, Congratulations
Resurfacing normally includes chipping the old plaster out and replacing it with new plaster. This was more like a paint job.
Hey Sherrie. Thanks for your video. Nice work! My old roommate was
named Sherrie. You Sherrie's are very resourceful people. :-) I'm
working on a pool at the moment. Your video was very insightful.
Fantastic job. I will also be doing this by myself. How much did the kit cost, and when you tiled, did you caulk between tile top and decking? My pool also lowers water every couple days, but I will see where it's leaking from when I empty pool. I have tiles falling off and a gap between tile tops and decking , so I will be doing it all. How has the roll plaster lasted so far?
Sweet nice job. Screw people that don't wanna help
I cannot believe you re-plastered your pool by yourself and without expert help. How far down did you go on the chipping of the old plaster? What plaster mix did you use? What did you mix it with?
I'm curious to know how the product is holding up so far. I'm considering using this product but there is not much info on the internet to do a research. Thanks!
I am retiling my pool and you mentioned an acrylic mix for the grout and tile moretar (adhesive) can you please tell me the brand you used? for each? Thank you. AMAZING job very impressive.
Amazing job and power to you for taking it on yourself
nice job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 tough work 😫😫😫😳😳😳 but the BIG saving and getting it done was well worth every saved $ €£¥ i bet?! Greetings from Bavaria were we have the challenge of very cold and snowy winters, my pool is a BIG challenge too
Great job! I'm wondering how the SiderCrete has held up after all of these years. Any issues? Is it time to redo it again?
Hi - I know it’s been some time, but do you remember how many buckets of the Sider Crete kit you used? As well as if you know how many gallons of water your pool has?
Thanks in adv
Good job.. 15,000 bucks those people are robbers.. looks beautiful.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 great job!
Sherrie great job!! So when you acid wash the pool does that take the old concrete out?
Looks beautiful! Hummm I'm in the process of getting quotes for our pool.
I would say for any one else considering this project- dont use the same tile she did. The more grout surface you have the more places you have green and yellow alge to grow and it even if you dont get it, cleaning that much grout with a brush wont be fun. Your pool guy will thank you!
Looks like you pressure washed the deck too , good job , did you replace the pump and filter also ?....
Great job on this, no small feat.
wow amazing. Im in process of planning my steps. I need tile redone and plastering or Aqua Guard!!!
Thank for video.
i do exactly this stuff all day.. Awesome job!!!!
Your lucky the pool didn't rise up on you for being empty so long, you run a big risk of that happening, but you did a great job!
Great job..!
I plan to do this next spring...
Can you update how this is holding up??
Color me impressed 👏🏻👏🏻
Great JOB Sherrie!!
Hi. Just saw your video. Great job. How is the plaster holding up?
OMG that's beautiful. Great job. You just increased the property value alot.
hey u really worked ur tuckas off good job ... it came out beatiful ... i truly believe this what youtube is all about ... awesome vid ....
I feel!!! 9k - 13k to replaster! Oh my... 1k to drain and wash!? Out of being such a cheapskate, I rented a poll water pump and did the draining and washing. Saved a grand. Literally in the parking lot of Home Depot right now running pump. Came across your video while searching for RUclips videos on plastering a pool! After getting the quotes I'm thinking of doing it myself.
Question, how did you find the leak. I too, have a small leak that goes down about an inch or two before the tile. I'm wondering how I can find that?
Excellent, well done.
Great job! I want to do this myself, but don't think I can. Great stuff!
Wonderful job
Hi Sherrie. I love what you did. I wanted to use the sider cret on my pool (interestly I found out it is made just a few miles from my house, but I just found out about it). Is yours holding up well? I just want to make my pool great again. Thanks for any info you can give me. I think it's great you can do all this on your own.
Great job woman!
Hi, really nice job. I am getting ready to do my pool and was wondering how this material (sider crete) has held up. I have read conflicting reviews on the material. How long has it been in your pool and how well is it holding up? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and again, really nice job! Thanks for posting this.
Where do I start
quick question, wouldn't it be more effective to use an electric paint sprayer to apply the coatings? so that even it's one person, you're faster than 3 persons?
I'm needing my pool tiled and with a quote for $1,800, I just can't afford to hire out (unless I can get someone cheaper). Thus, I'm looking to learn to do it myself (well with my teenage son). I guess I'll continue looking.
Hey; I’m thinking about doing this too, but instead of using plaster I’m thinking of going with tile. It’s supposed to last a lifetime
I noticed many people asked for you to give an update on how the pool held up after 1 year, 2 years and 3 years and you have not replied to any of them. I can only assume your hard work did NOT pay off in the long run. I will keep putting money away for mine to be professionally done....AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!!!!!! Well, I don't.
She hasn't updated any of her videos for two-plus years. It's a shame that you're going to hire someone. If you do it right, it's not hard to do but it takes time and will last for a few years until your plaster really needs to be redone. The company has been around for 80 years, so I would assume the opposite - that it DID pay off in the end.

@Don Forum Best comment,,she never used Diamond Brite,,look like paint,, epoxy paint,,paint can stay for 8 years
