*UPDATE:* Inkscape released version 1.0 earlier this year, and it changed the way stroke-to-path works. Be sure to check out an update video I made for the workaround: ruclips.net/video/Sy0nUkUt9CA/видео.html

Hey Nick, great tutorial, thanks for sharing.
I'm just a total newbee and it's helping a lot.
Regarding the mentioned breaking change in v1.0, I have already trouble with the "break apart" to get rid of the hexagons lower corners (at 02m30s) after the difference of the hexagon and the circle.
Instead of breaking the the diff-object into the 6 corner objects, I'm now getting again the original 2 objects (full circle and full hexagon).
Am I doing something supidly wrong or is that another change in the software (and how do I work around this)?
      Thanks in advance, cheers

    2:26 many people fail here
i think it need to explained that the hexagon vertical sides must be 90 degrees precisely perpendicular. Because when it is not, the circle won't take it right because we got the wrong width (from the not perpendicular upright hexagon), and the circle becoming too big (or too small) for the hexagon.

      Hello Nick - Great Tutorial
I'm pretty new at Inkscape (which is a bit embarrasing since it was introduced slightly to me years ago at University, but I didn't really give it a chance back then - probably due to graphics not being a major element of the education, but probable also a lack of decent tutorials online :) ), so I am trying to follow along here.
At the point 5:06 when you're making the first outline of the shape you say that you're just holding shift and clicking the colour red to give the shape a thin outline - Nothing happens when i do the exact same thing... I guess I have a never version of Inkscape now, since we're in 2020, but still - it seems like something that should work about the same way :)

I recently went looking for Illustrator alternatives.
Damn dude, when I first tried Inkscape on my own I was so confused. It was almost frustrating, but then you realize its just like learning Illustrator (or any other software) for the first time.
I'd hate to rely on Adobe and its shortcuts as a crutch.
Great vid. I'm picking this up little by little, and when I can make graphics with non-Adobe products, I'll feel less restricted as an artist.

Great tutorial! Thank you! I took a slightly different take at the end by subtracting certain geometries (all the white objects) and placing an image underneath, selecting the image and logo (one object at this point) then going to clip ->Set to apply the image to the logo. Then I took the logo i had duplicated before and set it on top and changed the opacity to about 25% to give it a bit of contrast. Thanks again!

So i had a problem with the stroke being invisible even though the opacity is at 100% and many other people are having the same problem. How i fixed it was that in the bottom left where it shows your color for your shape and stroke, now what to look out for is when the stroke color is only filling up half the bar that means your stroke color is "invisible" to fix this just click on the bar and in the color selection find the A (stands for alpha) and increase that to 100%. Hope this helped yall!

I think I know why you got the artifacts with the circle and polygon; if you use difference on the circle and polygon without changing them to a path first the artifacts show up, but changing them to path first it keeps the nodes to a minimum without artifacts.

I've followed your steps in this tutorial in creating my own badges a few times without incident. However, today I started making a circle badge. When I to text -> put on path, it flips all the letters vertically. They're in the correct order, but letters are flipped. I've opened two other new files and tried adding the text to a circle without incident. Then I go back to my project and it jacks it all up. Flipping vertically or horizontally jacks it up further.

    • @_IronLion_

I had a similar problem and it drove me crazy. Probably an Inkscape bug. I solved it by putting the text and the path on a different layer to the other objects.

  • @drutgat2
    @drutgat2 6 лет назад

Hi Nick. Thanks very much for this.
I have to say that I found some of the steps unnecessarily complicated.
For example, when I made the initial shape which you made by choosing a polygon and a circle, and then performing various operations on them, I simply created two rectangles, rounded the corners of one, shrunk the other a little and put it over one set of the rounded corners of the original rectange, used the bezier tool to draw a triangle which I put on 'top' of image, and then used 'Union' to group them. I was going to use Group.
That just seemed simpler to me than the way you went about it. Had I carried on, I had other ideas, although I really like the way you created an outline around the object. The way I was thinking about doing it was more complicated.
So, I have a question - are there reasons you went about this the way you did - smaller file size, or something like that - or is it simply a case of one person might go about something a little differently than another person? Is there something inherently better about the way that you created the original shape than the way I did it? Many thanks again.

In all your videos you do everything's from scratch and I'm doing good but half way through I always mess something up. My question is , if I find editable vectors like logos how can I adjust and change the text? Let's say I find a vector logo and I just need to change the text and maybe color scheme. I know this question is very broad bit any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Nick from NJ. Thank you and congratulations for the tutorial. I followed the tutorial, however at the end I can't get transparency on the logo. The part where it is supposed to be transparent, is filled by white color. Your video ends just after you make those parts on white color. May you tell how can I get the transparency done. Thank you

Hi nick. How did you made the boarders see through like the one in your thumbnail? Did you trace bitmap again after you exported it? Thanks.

Hey Nick, Thanks for the video - I'm having difficulties with the break apart step at 2:45 (as mentioned by someone else below). I use the Path > Difference / Path > Break Apart but I only get two sections of the shape rather than all six of the corners like you get. Any ideas?

I know it's a long shot but did you ever fix this issue and make it like the video.

How do you invert the black / white areas to make it white on a transparent background? This logo doesn't show the image background through the white areas like your reference image does.

Hey bro if I sent the inkscape file to a logo I created could you make it where it would better translate as a logo? Like the words is what I mean If its scaled down it's not very legible. By the way love the videos looking forward to learning more.

Hi Nick, great videos!! I am also having the same issue as boedhaspeaks at 2:45, the only way to break apart the individual pieces is to make the duplicate circle larger than the original otherwise it does not work or only breaks it into two halves. Any thoughts? Thanks

How do you make this a file that can be cut as seen on the screen? All the layers, even when grouped and saved as an SVG, show up and my cutting program reads them as separate layers

Thanks for the Video! Learning slowly but still kind of understanding it. But had a question how do you get it from the black/ white logo to the white being transparent? only the black part of the logo showing on a flyer?
