- I'm happy to say that, in my opinion, these 10 JRPGs are no longer "hidden gems". More people know about them and probably have played them already. They're not that obscure anymore!

Shadow Hearts is so unique. It's dark, gothic atmosphere plus the amazing soundtrack it features, makes the game such a memorable journey.
Lacrimosa of Dana is just an amazing game. The most fun I had in any game still until this day.
I think that's my least favorite Ys game. I wish I liked it more but I grew bored about halfway through. I might give it another try though.

I'm so happy that YS got popular. Played and finished every single one from 1 to 7, still haven't started 8 but it's been a great journey from the ABS (Adol Bump System) to today's gameplay...
8 and 9 build quite a bit on the systems introduced in SEVEN. So does Memories of Celceta, so if you only played the original versions of 4 (it also merges the stories), that might be worth a look too.
I just wish they'd remake 1+2 with more modern controls, i could never get into the bump system. And i think we're still missing an official western release for 5...

My GF isn't the biggest fan of JRPGs, but I convinced her to play Ys 8 for a few hours and now she's taken over my save!!! That's how good it is
Omg, can we please get a port of Muramasa on modern systems. The definitive version being locked on the Vita is a crying shame!

If you do another one of these, recommend adding Dark Cloud 2. Everybody forgot about it for about 10 years but these days it very regularly makes 'obscure games' lists.
Here's hoping that the spike in popularity of Tactics Ogre will give us remakes of March of the Black Queen, A Person of Lordly Caliber and Knight of Lodis. Also more within that setting. Easily one of my favorite settings in fiction.
I only played folklore last year actually. And it's awesome. It's rare a game can surprise me with a plot twist these days but folklore managed it
I’m so glad Muramasa was on this list; I bought a Wii console just to play that game. Arc Rise Fantasia is another game I would’ve bought a Wii for just to play because that game was amazing.
Fun Fact: The Devil Summoner games on this list are actually the third and fourth games. However due to being the being the first of those titles released outside of Japan and the fact they’re about 80 years before the events of the first two not many were aware of it. The Devil Summoner games got more recognition after the release of the second game’s remake (Soul Hackers on 3DS) however many still don’t know of the first game and even less about the TV show.
I picked up Devil Survivor 2 on the DS last week for $40. I'm currently playing IV for a second time and then jumping into Apocalypse but I plan to get around to them eventually.
@@Xpwnxage Devil Survivor and Devil Summoner are two different series. Devil Survivor had all of its games released. They’re my favorite MegaTen games.
So glad that alliance alive was mentioned I really enjoyed it on the 3ds and switch, I just hope NISA gets the licence rights for radiant historia and publish the game on modern consoles
Shadow Hearts is my jam, had all 3 games on PS2 but recently sold them and I regret it 😭 I just hope they somehow release a collection of the games on current systems. Or even better, do a remake! (I know that's a shot in the dark though)
Level 5 is the master of being obscure at first but having a huge following later

Excellent list of jrpgs!!! I'm proud to say i own every one of these! I'm glad Baten Kaitos and The Devil Summoner Raidou series are getting more recognition and I'm still hoping they will be ported to the Switch someday.
I was introduced to YS with Memories of Celceta for the Vita. As soon as I finished it, I looked for more. I got Ark of Nepishtim on PS2, then Origins on Vita, then I bought Oath, Chronicles 1-2, and Seven on Steam and 8 and 9 on PS4.
I just started Celceta (PC version). It's my first Ys now too! What are your thoughts on the other games?
@@Armateras 8 is the best, 7 is similar to Celceta , if you like 8, then 9 has just as good of gameplay, just a little weaker story. Origins is great, feels kinda old-school. Felgama and Napishtim can be pretty hard and grindy at times, but if you liked some of the others you may like these. Chronicles 1-2 is kind of a wild card. It has a "bump-combat" system that can turn may players (me) off. but the story is fun...a bit basic, but fun. Play 7 or 8 next.

Trying to get Raidou on PS3 is a nightmare, and the reason for Raidou in the SMT3 Nocturne Manix Plus which featured Raidou instead of the DMC2 Dante which was only in SMT3 Manix because a designer from Atlus work on DMC3's Devil Designs
i still have my folkore and jeanne, i was so lucky to play those games in release, btw i got a ps3 just to play folk
I played Ys and Ys II on Steam recently and had a lot of fun with them. The series as a whole seems to have banger music.

Yup, Falcom has top notch soundtracks for all of the Ys and Trails games, and the arranged versions are also awesome.

@@buddhawasright Trails, sure, but the Ys games are pretty fantastic, particularly boss battles. Gotta play on nightmare or whatever the hardest difficulty is though.
I just bought a used copy of Folklore (with booklet) off ebay, $40! I have a fat ps3 Ive been meaning to get repaired so I figured Id have a unique game to look forward to
Not going to lie, your videos got me into a lot of series. And particularly for the Trails series, that was perfect for me.Tthe fact that I have to wait for summer for a US port of Reverie drives me batty.. lol
I hope one day Terranigma will no longer considered to be a hidden gem
Best thing i remember about Folklore was its character designs for old English/Scottish/Irish folklore demons and creatures, uniquely Japanese.
I love Ys, I remember back when I had a blackberry phone in the army, I had a hudsonsoft Ys game on it and would play it all the time when I was on shitty details. Napishtim and Lacrimosa were probably my favorites outside of book 1&2, and I’ll eventually get to Celceta & Monstrum when I get some time in the near future.
Seems to me that Muramasa and Odin Sphere would be in their rightful home on the Switch.

Yes, Folklore. I once owned this game but never played more than half an hour. Sold it and now it's expensive... So I wish I wouldn't have sold it.
I think Tactics Ogre Reborn is just a primer for the eventual Final Fantasy Tactics 2nd remake. Once that comes out its gonna blow up and be everywhere.
I loved Atelier Iris - one of my favourite Atelier games. Never played the rest of the trilogy as I don't believe it was released in the UK. But the later ones before Ryza were a disappointment to me because of the strict time constraints. Iris was a true JRPG format with the alchemy enhancing it. Ryza though brought back the old feelings of adventure with alchemy support. I did try the Ys games based on your recommendations. So far only played 8 and 9 on the switch but enjoyed them so thanks Erick :)
Atelier Sophie did not have a time constraint though.

I learned of Jean d'Arc (the game) when I researched the historical figure's presence in modern media. Seriously though, more games oughta be made based on historical characters to make history less boring to those of us who don't like reading thick books.
One of the first games I got on my PSP. I really enjoyed it being a fan of Jeanne before hearing about the game. I will say though she was a better tactician in the game compared to her IRL counterpart who likes to charge in full force.
Maybe if they did the history justice, last thing this world needs is more ignorant people giving their uneducated opinions on history.

I learned about tactics ogre from playing final fantasy tactics and ogre battle in the 90s. Wasn't able to play it until I got it on my psp though.
Mytran Wars is still a hidden gem yet to be discovered. Great TRPG for PSP.
Jeanne D'Ark game was my most favorite PSP game back then. Absolutely loved it!
I'm loving Trails from Zero. So much in fact that I decided to get the Trails from Cold Steel series before they disappear physically.
I've never played Ys until this year, but I have all the games, except Ys V and IX, on Steam and have started to slowly play through them.
I'd really love a remaster of Eternal Sonata. No one talks about it anymore. :(
I can't believe I'm still collecting NIS America published games on PS3, 28 games and still going ! They were a beast !!
Yea, would love to see Folklore get a remaster to fix its loading issues, and maybe something to revamp the story so it's not as repetitive, though I wouldn't quite know how that could be done outside of maybe shortening segments for certain characters. Would also be cool to have some new content, at least one new boss, like that monster that appears in a cutscene and beaten in it. That was so bizarre after all the hype made around it.
I disagree about the devil summoner one but the rest of the list looks about right
I loved Folklore and it's too bad it hasn't gotten the love I think it deserves.
I honestly clicked on this video because I thought he was gonna mention that Folklore got or was going to get a re-release/remaster/whatever but no.
Shame cause Folklore was pretty fun.

Basically the whole trails series. Sky-Ao was not popular until recently. I play trails from sky in 2008 and have been loving the game. the storytelling is just great. And oh, the hype that late many years, and my first jrpg i ever play that almost no one talk about until recently, Suikoden series lol.

It came up in my recommended after watching another JRPG RUclipsr, hikarisilver. They were covering sales only for JRPGS.
Great choice for a video Erick this really needed to be done by someone! I'm honestly going to puke if i see another "hidden gems" video that includes games like Folklore,Shadow Hearts,Drakengard and many of the other games that were in this video.
What's worse is that a lot of people who recommend and show these games at their collections have never played them and they don't intent to do so (they'd rather play the next blockbuster on their PS5/SeriesX or the next overhyped indie). They only buy and show those "hidden gems" because they think it gives them more "credit" as collectors. However when they start talking about them they can only say a few general crap that they have read from wikipedia or heard from other RUclipsrs. It's sad really.
Those kind of collectors remind me of people who takes picture of food to instagram/tiktok then proceed to not even eating the food.
GameSack introduced me to Ys, specifically Ys Origins. They said there was good music, and that was enough for me. I played it, I was blown away...then I played 8 when it released, and that was far beyond anything I thought the series could achieve. What a game! I'm so happy the whole series is getting the recognition it deserves now.
Yeah, they've definitely done a lot to bring more attention to Ys. My friends and I have a joke about the Sack Canon, which are basically the games/franchises that pop up in some form or another every few videos. Ys, Outrun, Columns, Space Harrier, etc.
Do I have to play most Ys games to understand what's going on on Ys 8?
@@eduardogaxiola3907 Nope! Ys games are fairly standalone adventures, you can definitely dive into 8 without having played any of the others. The only thing they have in common are certain characters that are in a lot of them, but none of the stories really connect to each other except for Ys 1, 2, and Origin.
I played folklore many years ago (maybe 06 or 07) via renting it at block busters and it was both an interesting and unique experience. I just wish I got around to finishing it.
I got Jeanne d arc when it came out, I thought the box art was cool 😆 wonderful game, I've recommended it for a long time.
Its an easy game but that's aight.
I just want the missing content of Minstrel Song that we never got for the ps2, not being able to see what became of Monica in Albert's scenario will forever be a splinter in my soul.

My biggest hope in all this would be that they release a sequel to Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics and take it more seriously (though, the GBA Tactics Ogre was actually really good).
Yes! Jeanne D’arc! My favorite game on the PSP. I went on a search for this game when it came out, as I am a huge fan of the real character Joan of Arc. And this game was absolutely fantastic to play.
This was a great video. It's good to see YS getting the recognition it deserves.
As for Shadow Hearts, the spiritual successor that's in development as well as those hidden gem videos on RUclips probably helped it. Still great though.

Muramasa rebirth is one of best remastered game of all time. I'd go so far as to say that it's like the Bloodborne of psvita. The best game ever made for the console, but stuck there forever.
Knew Folklore would be a classic since before it came out.
I was in love with the Iris Trilogy!
Bought Vita just becouse of Muramasa, Odin's Sphere and Dragons Crown and ofcourse the Ys-es ....masterpieces
i dont have my vita anymore and most of game im sold...but muramasa rebirth is the only vita game i still kept in my treasure box.

I remember that not even that long ago you could buy Jeanne D'arc online for like 15 USD i remmeber that i saw a sealed copy on a store for like 10 but, the game has become so well known and sought after that only the UMD is like 40 USD+ and complete copies arre like 70 USD, this game is going to get super expensive in a really small amount of time, so get it know befoee it becomes a 150 USD game
I would say Demi Kids is still widely forgotten when it comes to Shin Megami.

Tactics Ogre was a grindfest. Final Fantasy Tactics perfected what Tactics Ogre started.
I have played both and will NEVER play Tactics Ogre again. I have played through FF Tactics at least 5 times through the years.
As for Ogre games...
I have played through Ogre Battle at least 3 times. Ogre Battle should be more well known.
Baten Kaitos (origins?) has an amazing soundtrack.
You could put Fire Emblem on this list. Before Awakening, Fire Emblem was a very niche market.

Folklore is technically a hidden gem when comes to not being on the playstation store would it should have been a long time ago.

Something has to be wrong with me, I just can't stand Trails In The Sky while eveyrone else loves it to death. What about Digital Devil from SMT nobody remenbers those. I would love if ATLUS did a just huge SMT franchise release on Steam or PS Store or both since Persona has moved to steamed.

There's a digital version on the nintendo 3ds shop, I would also recommend radient historia on the 3ds as well if you haven't played it yet.
If you can get alliance alive on the modern systems I would suggest that as the 3ds camera system isnt as good compared to the remakes but both very enjoyable

I've always wanted to play Baten Kaitos just for its strange name, but then I learned of a scene where the MC callous and nonchalantly loots the bodies of his new girl companion's dead friends and even offers to share. She refuses to accept loot from her own friends and says it is wrong in so many ways, but he just says something alike "well they aren't gonna need it it anymore, and they also aren't your friends anymore". Excuse me but how cold and disrespectful can you be?? Ain't no way I wanna lead an asshole like that to victory.
To be fair the not your friends anymore line is to far, however that is what you did in this situation because someone was gonna do it wouldn't you rather it be you cause you knew them.
If only Zetta Hero Project was as known.

I don't mind Atelier Ryza popularizing the Atelier series. It was my first Atelier game, but it's definitely not gonna be my last. I kinda like to call it "a crafting system disguised as a JRPG", because of how well-made the alchemy system feels in Atelier Ryza. Definitely worth checking out that one, if it ever goes on sale.
