Harker Ryan my mother's side came from Ireland and I'm working on my passport to go see Ireland and I am also trying my hardest to properly learn Gaeilge
I know right wish I knew more but I'm learning it now ta cupla focal . An breagan ( a few words , a little ) I have Irish family so they are fairly fluent but I've mainly done it through bite size Gaelic hosted by Siobhan on here various websites and I've got a Pinterest board dedicated to it If you want to check it out I'm under same name there . I'd start with grammar and very basic essential phrases from there depends whether you're happy with standardised version ( i.e. What's taught in schools ) or you're trying to learn one of Irish languages three dialects these by the way are reflected in the gaeltachts you have Ulster , Connaught and the one my ancestors would've used if they spoke Irish the Munster one as they for the most part are based in tiobraid arran ( Tipperary in Irish ) and also have a cork born great granny
I forgot most of what I'd learnt after coming to England in 1968. RUclipsr Clisare inspired me when she did a vid on how to swear in Gaelic. I've been learning since last September 2018 & have picked up a few phrases. ruclips.net/video/jyfx0gUALxk/видео.html
Shannon Keenan is suggest learn Irish with Dane a you tube channel it’s what I’ve been using and I believe duo lingo has a app for it as well plus there’s plenty of websites to learn from as well as bite size Gaelic hosted by Siobhan . Good luck 🍀
I love the sound of the Irish language so much! Honestly, if John comes to the Northeastern U.S. (Like Boston, New York, etc.), and he speaks Irish the whole time, he'll have a line of people forming behind him wherever he goes.😁
harker im so glad to still get to see the facts crew putting out videos i watch every video i see from all of you. btw you have an awesome sense of humor.
Facts., Try, and videos like this make me want to learn Irish. My grandma's grandfather was from Ireland and then moved to the USA. She was super proud of her Irish heritage (and green eyes and auburn hair) that it made me proud to be Irish-ish as well. I think she'd be proud of me for trying to learn Irish.
The Gray it is that beautiful poetic lends itself brilliantly to music and poetry and endearments . I’m learning it right now ; be aware that it does have dialects though which the gaeltachts correspond with . Gaeltachts are areas in Ireland where the language is in daily use including schools where it is spoken with little to no English ( Bearla) is used if you want to learn there’s plenty of websites to do so as well as apps for phone and tablet and on here bitesize Gaelic hosted by Siobhan which has a whole range of phrases and even how to pronounce the Gaelic names !! I have a few cousins who have these mairead ( Margaret ) , Caron , Cian ( these are pronounced with the k sound as the Gaelic alphabet has no k or j in it ) aislinn etc .
I read a historical fiction book called “Red Branch” when I was about 11, and it contained some Irish with grammatical rules to help the reader understand it properly. I actually understood some of what John was saying. Yay my memory is still holding (I’m in my 40’s now). This was an awesome video. Thank you for sharing.
I really, really liked this video! Great idea! Not one I've seen before even with all of the St. Paddy's Day stuff going around. Also, John was the perfect person to get to translate! A+ Harker
Lá Fhéile Pádraig Shona Miss Harker agus John! ☘ Up until last week I always thought my grandma had Dutch in her family but turns out she comes from 100% Irish stock. My grampa's 1/2 Irish 1/2 Welsh and could speak fluent Gaeilge and my mum was Blackfoot/Assiniboine Cree. I can read & write Irish somewhat okay but can't speak it worth shit. Anywho, that's my boring story, party on! 🤘🍻
Rainy Day Growin' up in Canada I learned French alongside English and noticed there are a lot of similarities in the structure of writing between French and Irish, it makes it a bit easier but my knowledge is still at a beginner/intermediate level, I often double check a lot of my grammar with a translator so I don't type something stupid. I don't speak French very well either but I can read & write it far better than Irish.
Elisabeth Boyd First thing IRISH people are known for there Drinking. ST. PATS DAY is a relious Holiday in IRELAND. IRELAND has funny MYTHS, like when we die we come back as Vampires, Leprechauns are also a Myth. To me IRISH Dancing is the best. Us IRISH are born with Freckels also known as ANGEL KISSES. Its cool ST. PATS DAY is Celebrated all over USA. Some Citys dye there Beer Green on ST. PATS DAY. JAMES PATRICK O'GRADY don't get more IRISH than that. In IRELAND they pronounce JAMES as SHAMUS. ERIN GO BRAGH means IRELAND FOREVER IRELAND has a famous saying KISS ME IM IRISH
That was really great. As an Irish-American, I tried to learn Irish. As Gaeilge has to be one of the hardest languages on the planet. I failed spectacularly.
To truly experience the romance of Tiocfaidh ar la, it's best shouted in either an Orange hall in Belfast, or a Rangers pub in Scotland. The locals will flock to meet you.
My grandparents are Irish immigrants, and they're baffled by 'patty'. Paddy's not a nickname for Patrick over here, is the only guess I've got. (Then again, neither is 'Patty'; that's a nickname for Patricia.) Irish is a lovely language, and I'm always glad to hear it. Happy St. Patrick's Day. :)
I know some Celtic Woman and Riverdance lyrics, but I wish I can speak the language properly because many of my ancestors came to America from Ireland. There's a ton of gingers in my family lol!
For any one who isnt irish john is on a after school hub and home school hub and works for rte (raidio telifis eireann no i did not spell those words wrong its irish) and rte is irelands biggest broadcasting service it absolutely huge and your not irish if you have never watched it 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪❤
FYI - the snakes that St Patrick banished were figurative snakes. He introduced Christianity and dispensed paganism. Paganism is synonymous with sin; snakes represent evil and sin in the good book. So it was the figurative snakes that he banished from Ireland. Interesting Vlog and Happy St Patrick's day!
my bf always says tiocfaidh ar la Erin go bragh (hes from derry city). ive learnt a few irish words from him but not much! no doubt hell try and teach our son that phrase
Paddy was used as an ethnic slur in the US in the 1800s. (That’s where the term “paddy wagon” came from.) Reasonably sure that’s why Americans use Patty’s day instead.
There must be some other reason other than the cold for the lack of snakes in Ireland. I'm from Canada and there's plenty of snakes here. I'll bet it's a lot colder too.
Saturday here, Happy Paddy's day kids! Play safe. I don't know if I could ever learn the Irish language, it is wonderful to listen to though. "our day will come" sounds like a threat AND a promise.
my bf always says tiocfaidh ar la Erin go bragh (hes from derry city). ive learnt a few irish words from him but not much 🙈 no doubt hell try and teach our son that phrase 😂😂
Irish is considered the first language of Ireland but it is not the language most people learn to speak first. It is taught like a first language in schools, which is not ideal. So they teach complex grammar, analyse poems, memorise rules and exceptions etc, instead of just learning to be conversant. A lot of people can't wait to be done with it by the time school is finished, but also a lot of adults regret not being taught it better in school.
The english made all Irish culture and language illegal during its occupation. You could be killed for even engaging in Irish sports or speaking Irish. So it’s very much now a second language.
Well irish is actually the first official language of the state, but in practice english is spoken as the first language by the vast majority of people as the everyday language. Its become very much a ceremonial language
It's because paddy was used as a pejorative in regards to the early irish settlers. Using it has largely been considered racist. You know how much we like to pretend we're not racist.

Awwww.... it's Johnny BS with Harker !!!!
Love y'all guys! Keep up the great work! Happy St. Paddy's from Texas! Have fun!
so glad to see this pop up in feed irish wifey. great way to start my day.
Hang on, John speaks fluent Irish and has never done so on his Irish "kids" channel? Lad! 😱
Peter Borland I think he's a teacher in his day job so fluency in Irish is mandatory.
Pretty sure when he went to the park with Donal and Rufus there was a segment where he spoke with some kids in Irish.
Peter Borland he works for rte I think (irish tv)
"Say it to your loved one!"
My boyfriend is English soooooo I'mma just hold off on that xD xD This was brilliant though! :D
I really, really liked this video! Great idea! Not one I've seen before even with all of the St. Paddy's Day stuff going around. Also, John was the perfect person to get to translate! A+ Harker

"mumbles in Irish"
Other than English my heritage is Irish and German, I've already got the German down and this makes me want to learn the Irish.
I am so used to Irish people speaking English....so much that I kind of forget that that the Irish language exist. Love to learn about this language.
No.1 absolutely cracked me up. Did not see that coming.
Fantastic video. It was a delight to listen to the Irish. Go raibh maith agat!

Two of my favorite people on a Harker video, love from America! No Guinness to celebrate the day ! for shame !
Everybody be sure to click the advertisements when they pop up. It helps RUclipsr's make money.... At least I'm not getting manscaping ads anymore. ☺
I honestly would take an Irish History class if John taught it in Irish...even though I don't know any Irish! ((he could teach that too))

I am new to your videos, but they are great. However, the Galway Girl sung by Sharon Shannon was written by an American - Steve Earle.
Great video guys. Very entertaining, informative and fun!
Absolutely loved seeing you two together and was totally ready to see you come to blows over number one. lol
This is an awesome video... Irish sounds so cool..
That was really great. As an Irish-American, I tried to learn Irish. As Gaeilge has to be one of the hardest languages on the planet. I failed spectacularly.

I first saw you on Diane’s channel so I decided to subscribe to yours.
I know some Celtic Woman and Riverdance lyrics, but I wish I can speak the language properly because many of my ancestors came to America from Ireland. There's a ton of gingers in my family lol!
Now teach us all the fight songs to sing in the bars!!!
There are hundreds of them in both English and the Irish language. GOOGLE-"Come Out ye Black and Tans" by the Wolfe Tones for a start.
Irish language is beautiful! I need to learn it. 🙂
Harker looked scared when John mentioned the I.R.A.
Its like "no one expects the Spanish Inquisition"-Irish version
@@GFSLombardo No one expects the ar la inquisition!
This is super cool!
Sooooo I don't speak Irish or anything, but at 2:02 to me it sounded like a move in Street Fighter like the Hadouken move.
Hey Harker, do you know what 'splitched' means? Leatherjacketguy says it a lot and I tried to look it up on Irish slang sites but couldn't find it.
For any one who isnt irish john is on a after school hub and home school hub and works for rte (raidio telifis eireann no i did not spell those words wrong its irish) and rte is irelands biggest broadcasting service it absolutely huge and your not irish if you have never watched it 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪❤
Your Irish is getting much better! John being fluent doesn't surprise me, though.

That was Badass!
I laughed when you got John to say Tiocfaidh ár lá 😂
I really liked this one. Not finished with my Kaya but I think it is time for me to stop bothering you.
Awesome, keep up the great videos
Paddy was used as an ethnic slur in the US in the 1800s. (That’s where the term “paddy wagon” came from.) Reasonably sure that’s why Americans use Patty’s day instead.
I was not expecting the JackSepticEye reference. I should definitely avoid drinking water during a Harker video in the future.
There must be some other reason other than the cold for the lack of snakes in Ireland. I'm from Canada and there's plenty of snakes here. I'll bet it's a lot colder too.
no SNAKES in IRELAND??? I am so moving there! Hope you have a place for me to stay!
That was cool !!!!!
When you are supposed to go to work but you want to keep binge watching Harker.
Saturday here, Happy Paddy's day kids!
Play safe.
I don't know if I could ever learn the Irish language, it is wonderful to listen to though.
"our day will come" sounds like a threat AND a promise.

Fantastic vid. You are so awesome. 💗
Hello. Is Irish language taught as a first or second language? Is English the primary language now? Just a bit confused. Thank you.
Shad Smith first. That's why most people can't speak it. If it was taught the same way as French/German/Polish/whatever it would be more successful.
Irish is considered the first language of Ireland but it is not the language most people learn to speak first. It is taught like a first language in schools, which is not ideal. So they teach complex grammar, analyse poems, memorise rules and exceptions etc, instead of just learning to be conversant. We got snakes here in Norway, we can bring some on the next raid err i mean next trip down there
I've heard the snakes were metaphorical, because it truly meant the druids from Ireland.
Yay #yes squad as gaeilge ☘☘☘
I only know the "Our Day Will Come" song from back in the day.
I loved this video. It was very humorous and very interesting. I really don't get to hear Irish spoken.
“A romantic notion” - priceless.
It's because paddy was used as a pejorative in regards to the early irish settlers. Using it has largely been considered racist. You know how much we like to pretend we're not racist.
I think those were more useful facts, rather than phrases. However the video was still great and you should do more like that!
