The 870 of your dad's was likely a full choke 30" barrel....best for Geese and Ducks. As a young teen my first 12 gauge (I started as you with a 20 GA Mossberg pump) was a new 870 Wingmaster as your dad's but the 28" modified choke....bought new in about 1970. I went with the modified choke since for all-around it could also shoot buckshot and even slugs for deer. I am not expert, just grew up in an extensive in-depth hunting family.
