Rap is always so much better when the 'singer' isn't tone-deaf. Mendez can clearly sing and has a great tone.

You have to realise that people from countries where English isn't the native language are very used to listening to music in a language we don't understand. When we where kids and didn't understand English we still listened to English and American music. It is more about what the lyrics sound like than what they actually mean. Personally I kinda hate rap. But in Spanish it can sound really good. If is something about how Spanish sounds. I don't understand it but it sounds good.

Plus att refrängen är på engelska och språk som spanska, italienska och portugisiska låter bra för örat och förknippas med semester, sol och party.

I don’t think most people knew spanish no, but I mean sometimes songs in other languages just hit anyway. Like Gagnam Style or Despacito.
DJ Mendez must’ve been one of the first artists I ever saw live, I was a child and he had been in Mello with Adrenaline. I don’t know where we were but me and my sister got a poster signed (with her name spelled wrong) that hung on our wall growing up.

Europeans usually have no problem listening to music in other languages. It would be quite limiting to just listen to music in Swedish or English. Much of my favourite music is in German, I like a lot of music in French and my three favourite Eurovision songs of all time are in Ukrainian, Romanian and Serbian.

Oh, I forgot Finnish. I love a lot of Finnish music. I'm half Finnish, but I understand pretty much nothing of the lyrics, but it speaks to me on some deeper level.

It amazes me that after so many years in Sweden and listening to so much Swedish music you still don’t get that we don’t care about the lyrics that much. The singing is just another instrument and the sounds the lyrics make are more important than the meaning of them.

It's not that the lyrics don't matter, it's rather that, if we don't understand the lyrics, other things takes precedence, like melody, rhythm or general atmosphere, but if the lyrics are good then that takes precedence. I mean the lyrics to "Mors Lilla Olle" is appreciated by everyone in Sweden. Just flows so well! (that was a joke, at least almost a joke cause I kind of mean it as well "läpparna små utav bär äro blå" is just genious lyrics).

Lyrics are very important to many people here. Some songs are all about the lyrics. Like visor with poetic lyrics for an example. But in the 90’s a lot of songs that were hits and played as dance-music had quite bad english, which is not the case today, and people didnt really pay attention to the lyrics when it came to that music. A lot of music that was released back then would never have been let through today with those lyrics.. The standards are much higher now.

Okay, it's not easy for you who moved here and it doesn't get easier when you jump between styles and years. But Sweden worked like this during the years I was a deejay that the music styles were replaced one after another, every 3-4 years or so. Rock (like Elvis), prog, hard rock, disco, punk, modern rockabilly music, synth, folk rock, reggae, Irish, pop, Latino, Europop and now it's rap and Epa-dunk. These came one after the other and I've probably missed a lot in the list, but as in this song, it was the Latino thing, not that he rapped that people liked.
Latino music was played everywhere in all languages and people didn't care what language they sang in. As long as they could party and dance! This song was played at every beach hotel, beach disco, summer veranda and nightclub. That and 100s of other Spanish and Latino songs.
Today, however, it's more mixed and the style of music is completely different between different parts of the country, clubs and who you hang out with. And Sweden, which is a country in Europe and not the 51st state of the USA as some seem to believe, we have always listened to music from all over the world before. Why do you think we produce such good music here? Well, because we take from other cultures, shake things up and the result is a product that is Swedish.

First of all I wanna say I really do care about lyrics. And for any song you can just look for a translation to the lyrics. A good song is a good song. I listen to music from all over the world.
I like well written lyrics and some substance but I do not need to understand the language. I also listen to silly and fun etc songs.
Some artists I love watching interviews with but I need subtitles but me not understanding their language doesn't make them or what they have to say any less interesting, deep, funny etc.
I think it's really strange that you think Swedes need to be good at Spanish to appreciate the song.
Many songs I've heard that I like, I liked a lot before checking the lyrics.
But for me it's important to check lyrics so I'm not listening to something where I don't like what they're saying.
Same with movies, drama series etc, if you just watch movies etc. in languages you know you are really missing out. There is always english subtitles that you can find.

Älskar den här låten, har den på CD-singel. En bra låt är en bra låt. Lyrics is secondary. Jag lyssnar sällan på texter, glömmer liksom bort. Ibland sägs det att det är därför vi lyckas så bra inom musik, att melodi och sound kommer först.
