  • We should probably explain why we were rushing through these beautiful countries to get to Tanzania. We had to leave Africa unexpectedly for a family matter, the time we spent away from the continent left us with little time to get up to Dar Es Salaam. We were meeting my brother Charlie and best mate Phil in Dar Es Salaam, they were coming out to meet us and spend a month on the road with us.
    This is the story of the mammoth journey across 4 countries to hopefully reach the Dar airport to surprise the boys as they arrive. (We had told them we were going to be 2 days late)
    We hope you enjoy this video!
    Harry & Chloe.
    **P.S. This video was filmed in December 2023!
    You also may be wondering why Harry says that we haven't camped in a month, well we had to make an emergency visit back to the U.K. for reasons we will keep private. Hope you guys understand our wishes.

    Not sure on this occasion but they do put the router off in order for cash payment- so they can skim- also to get you into a town for an ATM where people will be ‘expecting you’ - so remember to take care too 🙏

      Cash most definitely is king!! We have learnt that the hard way a few times now, you’d think we would have learnt that by now 😂
      It was all worth it in the end and was a reward to visit Zanzibar with the guys 🙌☺️

      @@TheLandyExpedition It is even more important for East African checkpoints in case there is "fine you can pay at the checkpoint." My tip would be to have two wallets in the car; one for checkpoints with a small value (circa $20-50) and one for everything else well hidden.

    Just finished a similar distance road trip in 5 days on mostly interstate highways, without border crossing drama. I can’t imagine doing it on mostly dirt and potholed 2 lanes, with all the corrupt road blocks, and border crossings.😩
    You guys are animals!
    (and young) lol

    Impressive mileage. We found that our 300Tdi would go forever, but it tended to be the clutch master and slave cylinders that would go more often than anything else. Always worth picking up a spare.

      Interesting, we’ve had the same clutch for 5+ years now. Probably time to change it out soon:.

      I remember a particularly feisty policeman a few years ago, jumping in front of my car on the road to Iringa, brandishing a bizarre handheld "radar" made of styrofoam and cardbox, with a peculiar looking "dial" stuck at 66 mph, accusing me of speeding. I gravely made him aware that the road was riddled with potholes and that I was in no way feeling suicidal, God beware!
      May be his batteries were flat, as I did not see any lights blinking on his "display" to confirm the shot he had just made of me? Could this be the reason for his dial to be stuck at such high speed? Would he like me to fix his radar and tare it as I was an IT-engineer?
      He sent me empty handed with a huff on my way .@@TheLandyExpedition

    I would find it interesting if "the needed documents" could be named once! Insurance and Carne De Passage (Trip-ticket) being only one of them I suppose

    • @TheLandyExpedition
      @TheLandyExpedition  6 месяцев назад

      Varies in each country but most of the time it’s passport, carnet, tax, insurance.
      Some counties still make us purchase a TIP even though we have a carnet.

  • @Abraracourix
    @Abraracourix 6 месяцев назад +1

    Well, I hope you have a Carnet with the 25 pages and even that might run out in 12 months with so many border crossings back and forth 😀 I know you guys entered and exited Zimbabwe twice and now Mozambique too. Are you guys backtracking to Zimbabwe or going to continue East Africa?
    Those Carnet pages are going to run out soon before 12 months lol
    Can you do a TIP in some of those countries when you re-enter? I know Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia and Botswana will do TIP for land crossings and even Tanzania. Malawi and Kenya used to require Carnet but they could have changed by now and issue TIP.

    • @TheLandyExpedition
      @TheLandyExpedition  6 месяцев назад +1

      We have actually exited and entered Zimbabwe 3 times now. As we explained in the description of this video, we had to make an unexpected trip back to the UK for family reasons. Left our Landy in Harare and then had to rush up to Tanzania in time for Charlie and Phil’s arrival.
      On our return back to the UK we ordered a new carnet, not because the pages were going to run out but because our carnet was due to expire and we have to renew it for our continued travel in 2024.
      We hope you enjoyed the video ☺️

      @@TheLandyExpedition Yeah, I knew before it started that you were not going to do it in 3 days lol 6 is not bad with 4 border crossing. I thought you left your car in Zimbabwe when you went to UK?
      I figured you for tea drinkers more than coffee drinkers lol Try the Tanzanian Peaberry and Kenya AA. Both are excellent coffee beans. Ethiopia has some great Arabica beans as well.

      Carrying any kind of a weapon is a big no no and not required. This is not the dog-eat-dog culture of the US.
      Rural Africa is generally very safe (unless you are stupid enough to travel in a conflict zone). You are seen as a guest and treated as such. All campsites have a guard and if wild camping, if you seek out the permission of the local chief/village elder, you will have no issues. Bigger issues in cities where petty theft and personal safety is more of a concern as is the case anywhere in the world.

    • @TheLandyExpedition
      @TheLandyExpedition  6 месяцев назад +1

      We’ve never felt the need to carry any weapon for protection. We’ve never felt unsafe.
