Okay Dusty, have you ever heard the old saying “a watched pot will never boil?” Watching you wait for 8 minutes was entertaining!! I’m so glad the water all tested okay, that will put your mind some relief. I also love watching the bison tearing into that roll of hay. They’re like little children at Christmas time!!

@@georgedavidson1221 Is that a question? Of course the test strips do not test for bacteria. That would be done with a culture and I would imagine the culture results would be off the charts since the bison have been pooping in the pond since day one.

Lets go back 100 years ago and think of how hard it was for framers/ranchers to pull a fence without all the modern tools. We put the spool of wire on a stick my brother held one the side and I the other while, dad nailed it to a tree or wood post. Now you have pole hole shovels or augers to dig fence posts holes and wire com-a-longs to stretch the wire and 4x4's instead of horses. There were tractors 100 years ago, but with all the attachments we have today wow! There are times I'm glad I was born mid-century (1951 ) it showed me what hard work was and what a payoff you got. Other times it is nice to have all the wonderful things that make life easier today. When I was real young we still had an outhouse, well pumped water but from outside in a pump house to bring water in for home use and watering the animals outside. Of course we were pleased to have these things they were new for us and better then the old. The worst part for water was Minnesota winters and chipping and melting ice. Not just for us but the animals also. I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the picture. I am glad we had to do things the hard way. We still did not work as hard as my Grandparents had to and theirs before them. Farming chores are now are still hard labor, but, I bet in 40-50 years from now you will be telling your Grandchildren how lucky they are to be farming now because when you where a young farmer you did not have................etc.......etc......... Thanks for listenibg to me rembering the good old times!

Enjoyed your post. Yes, some innovations today are helpful others not so much. One important thing you learned was to love people and use things. Unfortunately too many of the newer generations have it backwards.
Another thing we all learned and Dusty, Cole, and Wes put into action is the more helping hands the faster and happier the job gets done, and the more fun you have while doing it. Glad to see Dusty's family and friends pitch in to help. God bless!

i have several lakes and i place a large barley straw bale in each one, it helps keep planktic algae down... sometimes if it gets a lot i break up a bae or two and scatter the straw around the edge, along with a large fountain head in the middle to aerate the water but not too much as that will kill the fish.

    1. Your always going to have one who will test the gates. If they even move a little they will always check it.
    2. With a footer attached the gates when properly closed will never move. Also over time with ppl climbing over the gates your hinges will never sag. Here if u don't get it

In the midwest your water will be high in carbonate since almost all the native rock is limestone (calcium carbonate). Once it is dissolved in the water, drought will concentrate it. Carbonates usually make up the white crusty stuff that sometimes forms on the perimeters of drying bodies of water. At the best of times you will probably be high normal for carbonates.

Carbonates are a chemical ending to "salts" ie., chemicals created by acid base reactions. Sodium bicarbonate which is baking soda is a chemical used in baking to provide lift in baking and as a home remedy for upset stomachs. Also part of the basic structure of limestone, made primarily of calcium and manganese carbonates. College chemical 45 yrs ago.

Growing up and farming/ranching in west Texas, I understand how just a little rain can cause things to green up. Drought is really hard on livestock and ranchers. There are so many things to go wrong. We always had to move cattle around based on our water situation. The greatest day was when we finally got a place with irrigation.

There is nothing like rain from the heavens. You all have been so busy trying to get things in shape after the death of one. Thankful for the rain . Love to watch them attack a haybale. Great testing the water is a plus. It seems to me that what lacks in ponds is more rain to keep it fresh, but in a drought what does one do? Since you have several ponds, after you get all the areas fenced you can keep rotating them to not only pastures, but ponds too.

Blue/green algae test - heat sounds like the test used sodium hydroxide. Also works to clean animal skulls up for European mounts.

There was a show on WI public radio years ago where they recommended the "handshake of death" to killing specific plants. If you're worried about overspray, etc., just use a glove that you spray anfpd then grab the plant. This puts the herbicide directly on your targeted plant only.

Wondering about the spray leeching into the ground/pond water ?

    • @mikegray-ehnert3238
      @mikegray-ehnert3238 2 года назад

If worried about spray leeching, the "handshake of death" can eliminate that by its purely topical application to the individual plant. Application to 'glove' would need to be kept from ground so zero seepage.

Hey Dusty, Great video today. Glad you tested the water on your property. I have a question for you. Have you thought about collecting the bison manure and selling it? I know it fertilizes your pastures. But with no rain does that not make more flies to bother the bison? Also, I have a recipe for homemade weed killer that is nontoxic and words really good. I use this because I have animals and don't want to harm them.
For a healthy supply of this man-made concoction, mix a gallon of white vinegar, one cup of salt, and one tablespoon of dish soap. Make sure it is properly stirred, mainly the salt has dissolved, then put the mixture in a spray bottle for easy use. You can stash the bottle in your house for repeated use. You can double or triple this depending on the size of your sprayer.
It is best to apply the weed killer during the sunniest part of the day, as the sun and heat help dry out and kill the weeds. Spray the weeds from close range, making sure they are entirely soaked, leaves and all. Remember that the solution makes no distinction between weeds and desired plants, so be sure to spray it only on what you’ll be happy to see killed. (This might kill them blackberry brambles.) Worth a try.
    Blessings!

My wife has brought that up to use on her flowers as well. Would be great fertilizer! We have not seen an uptick in flies yet, however that is something to keep in mind to be on the look out for. I may give that homemade weed killer a try while managing the Johnson grass the next couple of months as we rotate pastures. Thank you for the info!

Carbonates have to do with the water's hardness. If you had a pond that was the home to fish, you wouldn't want it to be that hard. The fact that your nitrates and nitrites are ok is because the nitrogen cycle in the pond between bacteria and plant life is working. It's all a balance. Animal waste, plant matter and such get in the water and decay. That creates ammonia. Then, the natural bacteria in the water breaks the ammonia down into nitrites and then nitrates which then feed the plants/algae.

Carbonate is alkaline acidity ph test. The higher alkaline means good ph balance not hard water. That is good in farming low acidity in soil.

Prairie lakes tend to be shallow and dry summers result in a lot of evaporation. As a result there is an increase chance for blue-green algae and cyanobacteria growth. Both are toxic. Our provincial Environment department tests local lakes and the the Health department will close beaches etc to the public for this reason.
