Andy Wood was vocalist of Mother Love Bone. He felt like he couldn't be creative and sober simultaneously. He overdosed Heroin in March, 1990. This song - released two years later - is an homage to his perspective.

And for those who dont already know that after Andy's death the band got another singer and became Pearl Jam and they pay homage to Andy with their performance of "Chloe Dancer / Crown of Thorns" ruclips.net/video/svndap60IbY/видео.html

“Don’t yell at Jesus” 😂 you 2 are so funny! This was Tools’ first song back in 93 and they have grown so much since then. 30 years of playing together brought so much more and they are the BEST!

"Hush" was tools first single released, from the album opiate. Sober was from their 2nd album undertow. But yeah you right about the rest homie 👍

Maynard is a good story teller. I feel the song is from both prospective of the user and also the substance.

Sober has actually saved alot of people from the song. I have been going through this myself and been pushing to get better. I've been fighting against demons and music is helping. NF a Rapper recently released a new song called hope. Best rap song of the year for people like me. I'm a fighter and NF and TOOL is helping me alot. Plus a spirit from above.

when he says "Jesus, won't you fucking whistle something but the past and done" he's not talking to Jesus but to someone else (probably himself), like for example if you said to someone "Jesus, would you just shut up?" or something like that. The song is actually inspired by a musician he used to know who couldn't play without being messed up on substances, and apparently he also just went on and on about the past.
Also, this is from their first full length record, so its before they really started to stretch out musically.

The guys from Tool were close to Layne Staley among others who felt like they couldn't be creative unless they were using. This is a beautiful and excruciating dive into the spin addicts profess. A horribly and hauntingly realistic take on what sent so many south. To be creative is to empathize with the pain you ;haven't experienced yet can viscerally imagine. Try imagining it and not being able to shut that spigot off.
Heroin is deadly yet useful, depending on how you look at it.

This song was def more “mainstream” than most, but, imo important along the tool journey. Plus it’s a good song, thx for the review guys. Love how you dig into the lyrics and your interpretations are good.

wouldnt call it more mainstream necessarily. more popular? yes. But still not the type of song that normies would ever listen to. If anything i think some of their less popular songs are actually more mainstream friendly in terms of sound and message.

One of the reasons they’re named Tool is they want fans to use them as a tool-to get what you need out of their music.
Love you caught the POV shift between the addict and the addiction. You catch a lot of shit like this in Tool lyrics as you dig. Like when he calls out Jesus & Mary. I think it’s less anger and more despair-even his faith has abandoned him. Why won’t Jesus help? Fuck it. I’ll drink. Dark stuff.
For a more uplifting song play “Parabol/Parabola” Yes, both is a must. There’s a very popular lyric video that’s great for reactions.
The other reason for the name “Tool” is that they thought it would be hysterical seeing their fans wearing merch that calls them out as tools. 😀

The beauty of this kind of music is the lyrics are often written to be crypticaly enough to fit whatever meaning you need to give them the meaning I always took was both the perspective of both the substance and the junkie

If you value your Christian beliefs then it is definitely worth while diving into Maynard’s lyrics… they are valued from either prospective…..and deeply thoughtful….

It’s a duel perspective from an addict and the drug. The reference of Jesus and Mother Mary is the cry out to God.

start this over. like he doesnt want to continue this life. drink forever. like he wants to drink himself into oblivion forever to get away from his troubles. Sleep forever. like whenever he is awake he is in pain. sounds like alcoholism mixed with a deep depression.

Drinking doesn’t help you restart or take you to a happy place. It makes you not care. Then you drink more when you realize and don’t want to. It just gets worse every day. Then you decide that you’ve fallen so far you can’t get up. So why can’t we just NOT be sober?? Don’t wave your fatty fingers at me.
