- David Marshall “Carbine” Williams' story was made famous in the 1952 film starring James Stewart, but his legend has become somewhat larger than the real story. Still the unlikely story of “Carbine” Williams is history that deserves to be remembered.

I only saw the preview and didn't realise it wasn't a Forgotten Weapons Video, and was surprised to see the History Guy!
Same😂
Looking for Firearms Jesus, found a History Guy
Same, but Ian has already done several videos touching on this topic.
Right? I did the exact same thing😆
@@kevinmalloy6129i thought it was one of those shorts or reels Ian releases to publicize his longer works when i got the notification😆
I have my Dad's M1 carbine he brought home with him from the Navy in 1945. Still shoots fine.
My father was a paratrooper in the 82D ABN stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC during the Korean War. Dad had a particular fondness for the M1 carbine.
11:28 this museum is the Cody Firearms Museum, a part of Buffalo Bill Center of the West. After a remodel not long ago, they brought more of their fantastic collection available for public view and private research (some of which originated in the Winchester and aromory collections). Forgotten Weapons channel has a few videos about the rifle, the W. A. R., and the carbine from David Marshall "Carbine" Williams and the Cody Firearms Museum.
Thank you for the lesson.
The idea for a smaller rifle for support troops came about because the Army did not want to issue pistols to everyone.
It is far easier to train troops to proficiency shooting a carbine than it is a pistol.
Especially a .45 cal pistol with significant recoil.
The M1 Carbine is still in use by a few countries
Israeli police and South Korean National Guards are two such organizations.
I would disagree with that characterization. It is not that they don't want to issue pistols. It is a lack effectiveness. And the submachine gun was not looked at as a better option.
Thank you for all of the content you create. Without you, history as I knew it growing up would be forgotten.
Watched you on the episode of "Unexplained". Great job!
Awesome! Thank you!
Do you know which episode it was? I missed it, and my family and I would love to see it! Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who may answer!
Thank you, Lance. Great story. The way you present your subject matter, along with your distinctive speaking style, makes every video easy to watch and brings a sense of mischief to each subject.
You hit the bullseye with this episode THG.
Great comment !
As a kid growing up as a kid in the 1970’s was my first time seeing the movie, and it instantly became my favorite movie an it still is to this day!! I always thought that it was Jimmy Stewart’s best movie he had ever made. It was a much darker of a movie than he normally made
Carbine Williams is my fav Jimmy Stewart movie.
(I didnt know there was anyone else out there that had also seen it LOL)
I've watched it many times. There's also some interviews with Williams here on RUclips.
Three additional interesting facts are entwined in this story. The M1 designation was applied to just about everything after 1925 until someone caught onto the challenges - imagine getting helmets when you ordered rifles.
The M1 Carbine cartridge was the first sucessful centerfire, intermediate rifle cartridge. While underpowered compared to the Caliber 30, M1 Ball, it is still lethal and quite manageable to fire.
Williams would have become a "prohibited person" upon enaction of the Gun Control Act of 1968. Another person who would have become a "prohibited person" (had he lived after 1968) was photographed by Don Hogan Charles. In that iconic image, Malcolm X is holding an M1 Carbine.
Excellent and unexpected episode.
Perfect timing!.. thanks for another interesting start to the day 😊
I recall a quote from Audie Murphy wherein he said the M1 carbine was his favorite weapon. During WWII the German army was using the bolt action Mauser. Many Wehrmacht soldiers sought to use captured US M1 carbines. Fifty-five years ago I was able to purchase one of these excellent rifles brand new from army surplus. It was manufactured in 1943 and i paid $20.00. According to the serial number it was manufactured by the Saginaw division of GM. What a beautiful rifle and a great piece of history.
I read that the late Bon Scott, legendary lead singer for rock band AC/DC, took up music while in prison. Honing his skills while incarcertated eventually led to Bon Scott being extremely successful after his release. So, a bit like Williams. I wonder what other luminaries mastered their "legit" professional skills in prison?
Merle Haggard comes to mind.
You should do a story about Eugene Stoner. The man that invented the AR-15 AKA the M-16
While Eugene Stoner invented the AR - 10 that the later AR - 15 and M - 16 are based on, he had the help of Bob Fremont and L James Sullivan on "downsizing" the earlier AR - 10 (while Stoner was also specifically working on the 5.56 mm ammunition for it).
My favorite WW2 weapon, thx for the history 👍
Mine too. Playing FPS games, I always ditched my weapon for one when found.
Col. Ligon's name is pronounced with a short i.
The Ligon family is historically a very important, long reaching family in the central and sand hills areas of North Carolina.
Now do Eugene Stoner,,,Firearms inventor, but not for the AR15/M16 platform but his follow on project the STONER 63 platform.
Stoner 63 was an engineering marvel well ahead of it's time.
Another very good one. Thanks!
Liked it! Aviation ones are my favorites.
but its not about aviation
Thanks you.
I had an Iver Johnson civilian model that was great fun, but ammo was expensive for my wages at the time and had to be special ordered through a dealer. Nowadays with the cost of bullets for rifles, primers and powder I've gotten into tatical pump shotguns. Cheap to buy, shoot and if it fits the bore just about anything can be fired in them.
Several prototypes and examples of his carbines are at the Camden Archives and Museum in Camden SC.
Melvin Maynard Johnson.. is another firearms designer who really deserves THG treatment.. he made what are arguably 2 of the greatest guns of WW2 .. According to the Marines who used them .. and his 5.7 MMJ cartridge turned the M-1 into an even better rifle .. A friends dad carried the M-3 with the folding stock in Vietnam
Great job! Good information
It's an interesting redemption story. I wish more prison stories turned out that way.
I’m going to join the Navy purely out of spite.
I’m longing to become a Petty Officer.
Practice your sausage skill.
That's a dad joke. A wonderfully terrible dad joke.
Please tell me you're a dad. If not, as a dad, I shall pilfer this joke, and utilize it ASAP!
😂

World War Wisdom dropped a video about the M-1 Thompson at the same time. Which to watch first? THG of course.
My father was a marksman in the US Marines in WWII. He hated the carbine, he called it a "pea shooter".
IIRC there was a movie about Marsh that starred Jimmy Stewart.
He said that already.
Oh God history guy is gonna start asking me for 32 French Long here soon.
You should do a collaboration with Ian from Forgotten Weapons on John Moses Browning.
Heard a deputy tell an M1 carbine story. He was coming back from the range, where he had shot his department issued M1 carbine. He came across an older man stopped with a broken down vehicle. The man accepted an offer of a ride from the deputy. As the man was getting in, the deputy asked if the rifle bother him. The man replied that they don't bother him - he added that he carried one just like it across Europe.
I was a deputy sheriff for many years. I always had my M1 .30cal. carbine in the trunk of my vehicle. Never shot it, but had it out on numerous occasions. Purchased it war surplus through the department 55 years ago. I still own it. I love that rifle and the history it represents.....
Good morning! 👋🏽😊
My most favorite weapon in the 60s when I was in the navy 🦑
Currently stuck at home with powerful diarrhea due to a yeast infection that has spread to my colon.
These history videos are keeping me distracted from the waves of cramping and trips to the bathroom. 😢
Glad to be of service.
Actually, the carbine lacked the stopping power of the Garand or the Browning. The Marines didn't like it because they didn't take down enemy soldiers with one shot.

what a hellion this Williams guy was.....Typical "mad " inventor type...Can u imagine a prison allowing a convict to " make daggers and guns ".......
God Damn! Was they all insane back then? Lettin a convicted murderer build guns WHILE HE'S IN PRISON!!! wtf????!!!
Felons were not prohibited from owning firearms until 1968
I know!
He was a punk who killed a deputy.
