In college: study one day, dream about the equations, pass the tests the next day. No dreams, hard to pass. Now at work: dreams help me solve hard technical problems.
n my 30s & 40s there was a recurring dream where i was a section gang foreman on an extremely remote section of railroad. This dream was from many angles such that over years i grew to know the topography. Years later I visited my brother in Oregon and went for a long drive. Never been to Oregon so wanted to see what was about. Suddenly, there was the section exactly as dreamed. Odd the brain latched onto a random, forgotten, unnoticed photo or image i must have viewed in my youth and was able to extrapolate an exact correct reconstruction over years of dreams completewith back story.

Many years ago my family's clothes dryer had quit working. My wife who had no idea how a dryer works dreamt of how to fix it. She woke that morning from the dream and went straight into the laundry room with her little tool bag and fixed it within minutes, based on the instruction in her dream.
The mind is often more strange and fascinating than science can explain.

I have a cat, named Luna (popular name, I know,) that often sleeps on my bed, and many times while she slept, I've observed her paws and jaw twitching extensively, and sometimes she will even emit short, clicking noises almost as if she wants to meow. On one occasion, Luna was sleeping very near the edge of the bed when one of these dream twitching episodes occurred which resulted in my poor kitten suddenly falling off of the bed. It was tragic and hilarious at the same time.

I had recurring dreams of flying as a child and found that when I decided to try hang gliding, it came completely naturally, as I had dreamt of the act so many times I knew I had to build up a little speed before trying to gain altitude. When I made my first flight in a hang glider it was on a training hill and I only did a take-off and and flew a short distance, then landed. But what a feeling of completion -- I finally got to fly. That was March of 1977 and I have since logged a boatload of hours in both hang gliders and parasails, as those are much easier to transport and set up vs your average hang glider at 60+lbs. Some of my dreams became reality.
In 2011, one week before the Osama raid, I had a dream where I was in a room, and I remember telling my dad, that I was in either Afghanistan or Pakistan but if I was in Pakistan, It must have been near a military base of the Pakistani army. Somehow I knew I was near by in my dream, I heard come helicopters and I told my dad, "I heard the Americans, I got up and grabbed my AK, and when the door was busted open, I got shot in the chest and head."
I told my dad I was just playing too many video games. I drew my "home." Maybe the games caused me to have that dream.
By coincidence, the same drawing I made was like Osama's room in the raid, like was described in the Seal's book shortly after, was exactly like my dream.
I dreamt that Osama would be killed before it happened.

Most dreams are frustratingly fleeting, vivid when I wake up but irretrievably in less than five minutes. According to a Disney song "A dream is a wish your heart makes.." That may not apply to nightmares, but it does apply to the abstractions that occur in our dreams. Sometimes a solution to a problem pops up in an abstraction, something that doesn't exist in reality but our imagination creates it. It may be the one thing that separates us from the animals.

I don't dream in normal circumstances. It is almost impossible to describe a combination of things in dreams that I have no true memories about, or a new word. A psychotherapist told me that this is because language usually takes over the thoughts of adults, and they are unable to think in raw images or concepts anymore. Or maybe he said that to ease my concerns about the lost ability of dreaming.

I am surprised you did not include August Kekiule, one of the foremost organic chemists of the 1800s. He attributed two of his major innovations to dreams. One dream gave rise to his theory of organic chemistry structure, i.e. that carbon compounds formed chains that were durable, and whose structure and attachments gave rise to their chemical properties. And in a later dream, he was imagining these chains as snakes, when one of the snakes bit its own tail; this dream gave rise to his explanation of the structure of benzene as 6 carbon atoms linked in a ring. These two insights are the foundation for all organic chemistry.
P.S. There are those who discount the 'dream' claims, but one can also deny that PaulMcCartney's mother was seen in a dream telling him to Let It Be. Of course, Kekule's mind was filled with speculations on how these multicarbon chemicals had the properties they did, and he probably could not escape these concepts even in sleep. But there is no good reason to not think that the freedom of thought in dreams allowed him to consider combinations that the existing paradigms would not have allowed.

At some point, I discovered they were pieces i was writing in my sleep, and the challenge became waking myself up to write it down because no matter how much i told myself "I'll remember this one!" it was always gone in the morning.
When I took Mandarin in college I had two small kids and time was limited, so I gave myself 5 minutes before bedtime to review my notes/flash cards for new characters. I have vivid dreams, especially since I've gotten older, and some I'm remembering more often. But can dreams be clairvoyant, or give a moment of esp? Crazy question to ask, right? I had a very real feeling dream of me working at the trade I retired from, which is common. I was the only one in the room when I heard this huge boom and felt the concussive force on my face from the explosion, which you would think would wake me up, but didn't. Glass blew in and debris was everywhere. I walked to the front of the building, looked out and saw a car bent in half, with a hole that looked like a rocket hit it. When I finally got up and sat down for breakfast, I saw on the news that overnight a terrorist general was taken out by a rocket while sitting in his car. My jaw dropped. Now, I'm not going to say I had a vision of it, but it was one helluva coincidence.

Those aren't dreams.... They are visions and precognitions. More real. Then real. I got shot once.

Chemist August Kekulé envisioned the benzene ring as snakes biting each other’s tails while having a fever- induced dream. Many solutions to problems have been revealed to me in dreams. I believe that the “unconscious” is allowed to peacefully focus where the “conscious” mind is overloaded with daily concerns representing too much background noise.

Almost every morning I can remember some dream I had from the previous night's sleep. But I've never had anything I would call a nightmare, unless it had to do with people I know... and most specifically 2 ex-girlfriends. Ive described dreams to people before and they've thought it sounded nightmarish, but those don't bother me a bit. (One comes to mind... being in the cavalry at Custer's last stand and taking an arrow in the eye. I turn to see a native warrior rushing at me with a tomahawk and pull the arrow out with our loud, sloppy *POP*. The warrior drops to his knees vomiting at the site of the arrow in my hand with the eyeball on it.)

There was a famous song by the Turtles called 'EARTH ANTHEM' that was foretold in a dream.
William E. Martin (October 8, 1945 - January 27, 2016), also credited as Bill E. Martin and Bill Martin, was an American musician, screenwriter, songwriter and voice actor. (Check out his Wikipedia page for his long list of movie, television and video game credits.)
Bill had a dream one night where he saw a group of young people sitting and singing both the lyrics and music for the strange Earth Anthem song. When he awoke, he wrote everything down immediately and then gave it to The Turtles , who famously recorded it.
Check out the song on RUclips sometime. It was entirely created by figments of the imagination who were in excellent voice one night...and too good not to be remembered.

In general I'm dubious of any useful "meaning" in dreams, although there are times when there is clearly great meaning in them. That said, I've always been fascinated by them and used to keep a dream journal just to keep a record. However, last week I had a realization about dreaming and what dreams mean...
I dreamt my uncle's former home outside of Portland OR was part of a stripmall. There were multi-colored Chinese paper lanterns hanging from the second floor balcony.
It was only a brief flash in the dream as I passed by. It played no part in the "plot" of the dream. However... it MUST have some meaning. Out of everything else going on in the dream all the other buildings which seem to have been randomly/procedurally generated, this one specific house was selected from my memory to appear.
I don't suspect some deep meaning... and certainly not some supernatural portent, but I can't help but think there was a reason my brain tossed it in the mix.
    Fascinating stuff THG! Thank you!!!

In university if I had a particularly difficult problem set in differential equations or mathematical Physics I would read over the problem set and go to sleep with paper and pencil beside my bed. i would wake up in the morning with the solution or the correct approach to a solution. I wondered why it worked that way. Some years later I had moved for work and bought my first house. I had a vivid dream that I was riding on a particularly exciting roller coaster. The dream seemed to last forever. The ride was bouncing and twisting and the light fixture down the hall was rattling ... and that woke me up. a second or 3 later and the earthquake stopped. My hypothesis is that while we are asleep our brains are no no longer processing all that external information and works at a higher speed.

For myself I know I am very rare as I can recall most of my dreams even months or years later.
However I've had some dreams where I can actually smell and have sensory tactile feelings.
One such dream I was walking on the sidewalk on the busy turnpike highway at night. As I walk by one of these modernized electronic TV billboards I could actually feel the infrared heat from it from about 12 feet away.
So instead of its being a mere dream, maybe it was my spirit walking as my body was home in bed sleeping.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention Joseph (from Genesis) and how his dreams were prophetic and provided a way for his family to survive the famine ravaging the middle east.
My husband was one of those who would go to bed with a problem and awake with the solution. His sub-conscience was stronger than his waking mind and he had a history of sleepwalking as well (walked off a ship in the navy while asleep!) He couldn't tell me what he was dreaming about while walking around, other than just a normal day. Over the years I was able to tell when he was asleep - a comment or two just wouldn't make sense.

There's a word for "knowledge" gained effortlessly via revelations, dreams, meditation, or prayer: mysticism. Mysticism might inspire art, but it has nothing to do with science, which requires work.
