So from what I understand, the final is basically the end of the Jinx / Vi story, but they have many other stories to be told. I don't know if they will be "Arcane" or if they will have a different name, but it isn't the END end.

In terms of the economics, there's a lot of mention of miners. Vander was a miner, the gauntlets are for mining, Silco monologues about the dense air in the mines. It seems pretty clear when you read between the lines that Zaun was used as cheap labour to mine valuable resources for Piltover. Most Zaunites who worked in the mines probably suffer from serious health issues as a result. I think as of now a lot of the oppression is due to the lack of political representation of Zaunites meaning that they never received adequate healthcare or reparations for their labour.
Then I think Vander/Silco's violent uprising would've been the result of peaceful protests being met with violent brutality from enforcers so they realized that peaceful protest wasn't an option.

As far as the economics of the world goes and as someone that never played the games it always looked like Zaun was mining the fissures and Piltover was exporting whatever they mined to other nations.

I feel like it isn't fair to say a character "shrunk" just because they had character *growth* that you didn't like. By that logic, if a character isn't one you like conceptually, it's bad. Shrink is a very negative term, invalidating the writing and direction and themes because they chose something different from what you wanted.

to the point of "picking favorites" when it came to character arcs - it really is, and was intended to be, a story centered on Vi and Jinx. They ARE the core of the story, and the rest of the character arcs don't stand in a vacuum; they are reactions to the actions taken by Vi and Jinx.
Ekko doesn't become a freedom fighter without what happened in episode 3, caused by Jinx.
Jayce in particular doesn't go through his arc without what happened with Jinx attacking Piltover - otherwise he's just a genius inventor that makes a useful technology.
Viktor's arc is slightly more complicated - his worldview is directly affected by his disease and upbringing in the oppressed undercity. But him moving away from Jayce, and his growing desperation, is directly related to the increased turmoil, and the threat of hextech being used as weaponry, which in turn are reactions to Jinx's actions. But there are things we know from the game's lore that Arcane hasn't gotten to yet, so I'll leave it there.
Heimerdinger doesn't get expelled from the council without the bombing of the Piltover, and in turn then doesn't meet Ekko/see for himself just how dire the situation is in the undercity.
Caitlyn goes from naive rich girl to dissident enforcer because of what Vi shows her in the undercity, as well as the chaos that Jinx causes. Which is also intertwined with her personal relationship with Vi. And that's not even talking about the end of season 9 and the affect that will have on her going forward.
And speaking of Vi and Jinx, the core question (with no real answer) that the entire season 1 is about is "is it possible to forgive a monster?" Jinx in the end forgives Silco, despite him arguably being the reason she is who she is. Vi starts to realize that maybe she can't forgive Jinx after everything that she did, further complicated by the relationship with Caitlyn. Jinx felt betrayed by Vi leaving her, and conflicted because of Silco, and ultimately has to reconcile that Vi needs Powder, and Jinx can't be that girl anymore, and in doing so, loses any hope of reconciling with Vi.

    • @snoopraptor
      @snoopraptor 22 дня назад +7

Also on the whole "Vi is just going to become a bad cop" sentiment that's floating around - that was her original lore in the game from like, 10 years ago. Now that Riot has confirmed that Arcane is now canon (which is a pretty big deal), they have a lot of license to change/shift that original lore. They're not idiots, they understand the optics around it. And it's also pretty obvious, even from the trailer, that the main reason that Vi joins the enforcers (or at least, Caitlyn's squad) is out of a sense of duty to right the wrongs of Jinx's actions. You can see it in her face in the trailer - she does not look happy to be in uniform, given her parents were killed by enforcers. She feels directly responsible for what Jinx did, which imo is a very interesting moral dilemma. There is no hint in the slightest that Vi wants to/is happy to oppress her fellow people - she wants to erase what Jinx and Silco did, and she's willing to go to extreme measures to do so.

S1’s ending works perfectly all on its own. The entire narrative is a modern greek tragedy about the choices we make, the perspectives that lead us to them and the inevitable consequences of those choices. The attack could have been avoided so many times if characters had just done things slightly different, but because we so thoroughly understand who these characters are we as an audience know they could not make any choice other than what they did. Thats one of the many reasons the finale was called The Monster You Created, the monster is the tragedy of that final moment itself: death born of all the choices, actions and inactions of all the players involved.
Also Caits entire point is shes not just a boring cop, shes the lone example of a good person in a sea of corruption. Empathy, compassion and a drive to be of service are core to her character and S2 is set up to brutally challenge those aspects of who she is.

imo, in medarda's's mom line "your council is dead" she means 'council' more of as in "the institution" type of way, not as much as confirming the people in it passing, in the case of the show/piltover the council was/is the form of government in the city, she meant that after the attack the institution is effectively abolished and thus she prepares for war in their place.

Also Zaun's value is that the fissures are mines. The people of Zaun mines and Piltover handles and sells the goods of the mines. Think of old American mining towns where the miners are all owned and oppressed by the companies that own both the mines and the towns.

I dont rhink you guys understood Jayce's plot arc at all. Hes an ambitious inventor who still tries to the do right thing but can easily get carried away, blinded by his stive for invention.
Jayce has a history of just doing things because he has faith he can do it with little thought to the consequence, which is why victor and him are peefect foils to eachother. Victor is constantly bombarded with consequences, that supreass his growth and invention. After meeting Jayce he finds freedom in Jayce's here and now. His arc is Dr Frankenstein's.
Whereas Jayce by epsiode 9 is finally looking at the potential consequences of his actions. And making his call for peace end up not mattering is so devistating. And he will choose whether to accept that it is possible to do the right thing and have ot blow up in your face or that consequences are chaotic and therfore dont matter.

    • @timhaldane7588

His arc was one of being led from one bad decision to another because he wanted approval and to be seen as a hero. From the moment he got in politics, he always looked to others to tell him what to do. He was the perpetual "good boy". It ended with "with all due respect, I don't give a shit what any of you think of me anymore".

I am 99% sure Jayce isn't dead and that the person Madarda is talking to is either Jayce or her daughter because she always referred to the council in season one as "Your council" when talking to them. Also the gloves adding the hextex crystal to the right gauntlet is not Vi's and is new after Sevica destroyed her right gauntlet last season with her shimmer blade. Also Victor's arc is not done and ending one arc with the murder of the council would make sense, but not two, also Jayce was next to his hammer which can create an energy shield during the council meeting and Victor is half machine. Additionaly it wouldn't make sense if Madarda was bringing in her forces to help squash Zaun if she didn't think she would gain access to Hextech which was her whole motivation last season where her son had pissed off another faction in Noxious, and if both Jayce and Victor are dead then literally every person who worked with Hextech that we know (counting Sky who was turned to dust in season one) would be dead. To answer your other question as to why Piltover pressed Zaun the people of Zaun are primarily miners who work the fissures, and do materials processing and shipping while Piltover makes finished goods which would massively increase in expense if they were done safely.and had to be imported. Jayce says that is the whole purpose of the gauntlets while Victor mentioned their artisnal work with his Lazer claw.

I feel like the oppression of Zaun was explained in bits and pieces but still explained. Vander's mining gloves, the river toxins with mutated creatures, Jayce mentioning miners working without fatigue in the fissures with his shiny new hextech gloves, Silco mentioning the filthy toxic air that people who couldn't afford better had to breath, Ekko finding a living tree in Zaun meaning that the specific area was safe for life, Piltover counselors talking about shipping things and how hextech made it easier, Silco saying how Zaun doesn't see any of that money (which is widening the economic gap between Piltover and Zaun) because they can't trade with the outside as well as Piltover can, the illegal Pirate traders from Bilgewater seemingly the only traders Zaun gets that we have seen, the low quality of food in Zaun to the point sandwiches and cupcakes were special to the kids of Zaun, Victor's terminal illness being a direct result of the bad environment in Zaun, the fact that the only time Piltover citizen go into Zaun areas is when they are searching for something illegal from the shops or are enforcers, the trash shoots going from Piltover to Zaun. Piltover is like a rich corporation built on the back of Zaun miners. They are traders and merchants that care little for the environment as long as they don't have to deal with the consequences as Zaunites live and work in the filthy hazardous polluted conditions while unable to trade with the outside world since that is Piltover's job. Zaunites are your minimum wage working class miners that are giving up their lives to a hazardous job while Piltover is rich because they own thaw whole mess and are ok with exploiting workers and polluting everything.

I don't know if they're going in this direction, but I can see the logic of using the "Arcane" brand as the top-level name for a League-based Anthology Series, sort of like Fargo or American Horror Story. The core themes of each segment are pretty similar, but with self-contained storylines that execute and complete without interacting with each other. Big difference being it's actually a shared universe/IP, whereas other anthology shows often don't have any overlap between storylines. But the League universe is dumb as hell with tragedy with compelling characters at the center.
Icathia and the Fall of the Shuriman Empire. The Burning Tides in Bilgewater. The Mage Rebellion in Demacia. The Noxian Invasion of Ionia (or all the politics in both Noxus and Ionia that surround it). The War of the Three in the Freljord. The Darkin, Mount Targon (Leona x Diana is probably too close to similar vibes as Vi and Cait). Each of those also have logical sequels or prequels as well. Obviously, The Ruination.

So on your oppression thing It's more subtext and less explicit but there are several elements that highlight it.
Piltover is pristine and clean while Zaun literally lives in toxic run off and the air is killing them. (pilties cannot breath Zaun Air it is so pollutide so they wear gas masks.) It's not explicitly stated but its pretty clear.
Police brutality. was just very evident.
Jayce wanted to make gloves to help the Miners in Zaun.
The implications are that Zaunites are the Manual Laborers that procure raw materials, Zaun is also the place that Piltover dumps its toxic waste.

From what I remember as to how Piltover is so oppressive to Zaun, dates back to how they split in the first place. They used to be one city, but in attempt to gain more wealth they decided to blow a canal through the mountain the city is on, this sank the poorer half of the city and the wealthier side didn't lift a finger to help. The people of the under city end up being used as cheap labor for Piltover's industrial economy, the very industry that poisons and kills them as all fumes and chemicals spill down into Zaun. Even if someone managed to make it out of the slums and are on the path to becoming wealthy the "Noble" Houses of Piltover will assassinate them, Piltover does not allow Zaun to compete with them. Chem Barons would eventually take over the under city sponsoring dangerous experimentation(hextech alternatives) and allowing crime to run rampant with the occasional heavy crackdown from Piltovan enforcers whenever they would riot.
TLDR: The rich screwed over the poor, and now would rather kill them then let them be a part of the economy, the poor get mad and revolt leading to oppressive crack downs, resulting in a positive feedback loop of resentment.

Man so hyped for Season 2!
I feel like you didn't realy get the "Class-Hierarchy" and the reasons for the devide that exists within Piltover-Zaun, maybe you should do a rewatch before the next season drops. The entire season is sprinkled with social commentary and shows and tells very well how things are as they are.
The Undercity/"Nation of Zaun" is the dirty Industrial parts of the city, where probably most of the industrial output of the city is generated (but oh well, the profits clearly do not go to the workers there... seems familiar to a lot of periods in human history). Oppression due to class divides like that is something we sadly still have in parts all over the world. Ghettos, street violence, drug abuse, gang activity happens when a society does not care for economic equality of all it's citizens, which was mentioned clearly by Vi when she spoke to the council, only to be thrown out due to them not understanding the situation at all. The undercities situation was also several times commented on during season 1. Stuff like (Vi to Vander paraphrased ): Their living like Kings while we have to make due with their scraps. Also Victor is speaking in Season 1 about wanting to improve the lives of the undercity's residents with their hextech devices. I.e. the gauntlets for mining in the fissures & the claw laser for artifice work were clearly discussed (while not even thinking about the potential for abuse at that point). But apparently building out the portals to make Piltover a global shipping hub to profit of was more important, so that the rich council members can enjoy their illegaly imported alcohol, wohooo.

It looks pretty damn insane ! Can't wait for it.
Adressing the "Final" season of Arcane, I'm pretty sure it's because Fortiche prod is tired of working only in Riot Game's shadow (they've been working together for nearly 15 years), and now that Fortiche got fame and critical acclaim from all over the world, they want to produce their own shows. News just came from the Annecy animation festival (basically the animation industry's Cannes festival) that they unveiled their next project to be Penelope of Sparta, a sci-fi movie inspired by Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
And the first poster looks even more bonkers than Arcane !
Since an animation show or feature, especially at this level of quality, takes approximatively 5 years to produce, that means Fortiche is done working for Riot on League of Legends stories (at least for the foreseeable future), so if Riot wants to make other League stories, they'll most likely have to find another animation studio to help them make it.

@@ryanwilliams8723 Oh I'm not saying they will never partner anymore, I'm just saying that for the next 5 years of production of their own movie, they most likely won't have time to work on anything LOL related (keep in mind that Fortiche is only a little French studio, they're not like Disney or Pixar who have hundreds of animators they can allocate in different teams for different projects at the same time. It's all or nothing).
But also, they're not the only animation studio Riot Games has a partnership with (they only happen to be the best one).

Mel is alive because the line "your counsel is gone" is clearly her mother trying to get her to side with her and her way of doing things.

Yup. Viktor is definitely alive... at least he will be later in the season. Jayce, I'm fairly confident will survive as well. I think Viktor will have saved him, but will be in critical condition, with the only thing able to save him being the hexcore. Mel I'm hoping didn't survive. Nothing against her, I love the character, but she was right there and she's technically expendable.

From what people are saying this will be the end of the Piltover/Zaun chapter and then we're going anthology style to different lands in RuneTerra to meet other champions.
As for this trailer that's definitely Mel's mother narrating, so I'm holding out hope that Mel (and Jace) are alive. We also didn't see Viktor and I'm wondering if that werewolf-y falsh we see towards the middle is Warwick. I'm just so hyped we're getting S2 and wish the best for the Fortiche Production house.

  • @k-sanend6474
    @k-sanend6474 21 день назад

I think the economic oppression in S1 to me was very obvious. But that might also be an influence of me knowing the lore of the game to begin with.
In the lore there are countless stories depicting the wealth disparity, between both side. And I think the show did include many lines about mining, denser/toxic air, toxic river, poverty and later on the obvious class discrimination between Zaunite and Piltovan.
So I don't think they straight up point to the chalkboard and explain the whole systemic problem of their city to the viewer. As you've said it might be boring for a larger audience to dedicate 5mn in an episode just to explain the issue in the show. There is also no reason as to why a character need to explain the issue to another character. Zuanite would know already since it's their life. Piltovan wouldn't give a shit since they are the one benefitting and causing the issue.
So I believe that is why they never point it out clearly, but rather went with a more subtle approaching.

Yes. This season will wrap up the Jinx/Vi, Piltover/Zhaun, story arch. Mel is perished. But that was necessary from a storyline perspective. Her death opens us up to the rest of Runterra, specifically Noxus. This will be the jumping point for the rest of the world. I always knew Mel would die for just this reason. Same with Caitlyn's mother. How else would Caitlyn and Vi, become Enforcers as they are in the game. A little surprised that Jace would be among the dead. Figured he would live to create Caitlyn's three scoped rifle and a new gauntlet for Vi. Guess I was wrong about that part.

It said Final Chapter... not Final Season or Final, Final. I believe they have left an opening to explore other section of the world. There are over 160 characters in the game. Many of them more popular than the handful we got in Arcane.
On the council being dead? This could mean there is less than half of them alive and in need of replacing before they can Rule all the people of Piltover. I would think that Jayce made it out alive. Caitlyn's mom????? If she made it out alive...(Which I don't think she did) She might be badly hurt... setting Caitlyn and Jinx on a collation course with Vi at the center.
We only got a glimpse of Warwick... Now that's a reunion I want to see.

I'm sure Jayce and Viktor are alive, I'm on the fence about Mel. I love her character, but I don't see what she has left to contribute to the narrative that would be more impactful than her death. It would feel like a cop out if only the other bozo councilors died and not a major character, and both Jayce and Viktor have more potential.

Totally agree, for me Arcane is a 10/10 in all aspects except the development of the economic relationship between Piltover and Zaun, what is the resource through the exploitation that Pilts takes from the underground city? I would love to know more about it, I think it´s about mining basic materials or something.

    • @theguitardragon2341
      @theguitardragon2341 19 дней назад +1

I think they avoid explaining it because in the original lore zaun extracted the minerals (galsite) for the production of artificial hexite and piltover provided the industry for its refinement in zaun, piltover kept the hexite to use and export it and zaun used the remaining waste to create chemtech, this relationship had been going on for quite some time because hextech was created a long time ago by the ferros clan, unlike arcane where jayce recently discovered it so the dynamics no longer make sense, so we have to assume that zaun simply extracts raw materials for piltover in arcane.
