thanks for the video. my husband left his family for a 25 yr old and so i have been trying to mrs. fixit now. your videos have been a great resource for me!
Great easy-to-follow instructions. Here's a tip: G=green for ground, W=white for wide prong, that just leaves B=black for the remaining wire. Thanks for pointing that out!!!
Hedge trimmers are notorious carnivores of extension cords. I too, had a 100 ft cord fall victim to the trimmer. Like you I just lost a few feet and had to replaced the female end of the cord. I chuckled as I listened to your story. Your instructions were very easy to follow.
Thank you for pointing out the size of the slots vs color of wire to it. VERY HELPFUL I'm sure to those that do electrical once every few years LIKE ME!.
Thanks for the video. gonna repair mine now! and Ned... its an instructional video for beginners... nothing wrong with taking your time and showing someone who doesn't know how to do this the correct way of fixing things.
Just wanted to say thank you. My son ran over my extension cord with the lawn mower and he and I were able to fix it with the help of your video. Thanks again! :)
This video just blew my mind. Thanks for all these, wife and I are looking at getting our first house soon and I'm taking a crash course from your videos !
Perfect demo. Same thing happened to me just yesterday. Cord was brand new, first use, and I can't believe I ruined it. Thought I could just put electrical tape but your idea is much safer!
I have been using my electric chain saw and trimmer for years without so much as nicking the extension cord. I used to get upset at my wife and sons when they would come to me with a chewed up extension cord after they had been weed whacking or trimming. I repaired the cords easily. Some of my cords had many new ends and splices. Fast forward 10 years. I'm out working like a dog trimming, whack I cut a cord. Grab a new cord, trim some more and whack I cut another cord. Then, days later I'm cutting limbs with my electric chain saw and whack goes my third cord in a week. Now when I screw up cords I don't mess around, each one of these were nice 14 gauge outdoor grade 100' cords, ouch. The worst part was I had forgot how I had fixed them in the past. I knew where the green wire went but for the life of me I was unsure about the black and white wires. I bought some replacement ends and no luck. No instructions or markings of any kind. Then I went to the trusty internet and came across Paisteboy's video. That's the ticket. I went over to Home Depot and bought three exact female plugs like Paisteboy was using. To my pleasant surprise the plugs are marked on the inside telling you exactly what hole to put the wires in. In 15 minutes all three of my extension cords were fixed and rolling full steam! The only thing I might do is use some clear caulk to seal up the plug when the cord goes into the plug. There are very tiny spaces that might get moisture in them if you use the plug in wet conditions. Bottom line thank you Paisteboy for helping me through my senior moment with your great video! NOTE: one tip for the future I will be using a 10" sacrificial extension cord between my professional grade 100' extension cord and my trimmer in the future. If I knick the sacrificial cord I'll just toss it but I save my nice long cord from damage.
Cut through my hedge trimmer cord too. Asked a neighbor to repair it and he forgot about it. Saw this video. Great instructions. Saved myself $5 by doing it myself.
Thanks so much. The ground prong broke off my lamp but I can't seem to disassemble the plug cover should I just cut the wire behind the head and by a complete new one? Also is it ok to use aplug with a broken ground wire, I don't intend to but the ground won't affect performance just safety issues correct?
Thanks for the video. I bought the same exact orange plug you did. I haven't installed it yet but I noticed on the side opposite the screws, they have a strip gage to show you how much insulation and wire to leave exposed. Also, on the inside, it's molded with "black, white, green" to show which wires go where. Also, the black jaws that clamp on the wire can be turned around to accommodate if your cord is flat instead of round. This is really a well thought out replacement plug.
Believe it or not, we cut THREE extension cords today, all with the same sort of trimmers. I cut the first one and then my daughter cut one. I ran out to the store and bought a new cord... and an hour later, I cut the new one. Thanks so much for this simple explanation on the repair. I'll be giving it a shot tomorrow.
Just watched the video and yes it's very good with good tips for those like myself who knows just enough about electricity to not get killed why trying to work on something electrical. My question is, does it really matter which side the black and white wires are on? Will the cord still work right if they are switched? How would it affect what your are trying to power? Just wondering...Thank you for the video!
Thanks a lot, we found one we love and are hoping it works out for us. The best part will be having a basement to play drums in again and have a music room after they've been either packed up or set up an hour away for the last 5 years!
Hey I really appreciate this post. I have had a really good 100 foot ext cord laying around my garage for years, and I can finally get a new female end put on it and make it useful again. God bless man :)
Thanks Buddy. I just fried an extension cord and the cord on my heat gun for paint-stripping. They just fused together, and would NOT come apart. Really weird. So I have to put a new plug on the heat gun, and a new female on the cord. Doh! Thanks for refreshing my memory.
You covered all the bases, actually more than I needed. Out of necessity, I have graduated from idiot novice to "knows JUST ENOUGH to be dangerous" I had previously replaced the end of my cord, but all of sudden, running blower and no juice. I assumed it was a loose connection inside the plug. Took it apart and it was the hot wire. Being a MANLY man, I ended up with all the wires and connectors out of the shell. I knew where the ground wire went, but wasn't sure if the hot wire went wide or narrow side. Thanks for covering that as well - that's what I needed. White=Wide Of course when I put it all back together; no power. Couldn't figure out the issue so went BACK to the garage, got a shorter cord to test. No power. But BEFORE I took the thing apart AGAIN, went to the basement. Checked the box; I tripped the circuit breaker when the wire came loose. So before anyone stands out in their front yard cussing and fussing, double check that breaker box. Have a GREAT weekend! Roll Tide!
hi who makes the replacement end you used on this video i'm a musician and have to repair extension cords sometimes and i have the ends that you have to wrap the wire around a screw and then tighten it up i like the one your using just stick in the hole and tighten up makes more sence and won't comes lose thanks
Thanks! My B&D Weed Hog fused to the female plug on my extension cord. $8 for the plug at Home Depot, your video, and 10 minutes later the extension cord was fixed. Now all I have to do is fix the male plug on the B&D Weed Hog, but I think it's almost identical to your B&D hedge trimmer so I might be able to pull it off, too.
I found a discarded carpet shampooer and cut the cord and made a twenty foot extension cord . It works . Is there a potential problem making an extension cord that way ?
d rouse As long as there was nothing wrong with the cord it should be fine. It also depends on the gauge of the wire. Don't use it for heavy duty use if it is thin gauge wire.
susie here-yesterday cut my cord with the same tool you showed in video, I watched you and I am going to fix my cord myself-I think I can, I think I can, I think I can---remember that old saying--thank you.
Exactly what I was looking for. Ate my extension cord with the electric snow blower, but there was enough left to make it worthwhile to fix. Just wasn't sure about the wiring. Thanks for a solid explanation.
I can believe this! I went to turn on my air conditioning and realized that the end cord is broken where you plug it to the wall socket. I'm wondering if I could do the same thing. Are the wire same as the cord you demonstrated? if it is where can I buy the end? Can I get it from home Depot.
If the plug can be plugged into a regular outlet then it will wire the same way, but if there is a different looking outlet that looks different, then it will not be the same.
right on the money, I did have two wires crossed. They should paint the screws on the inside so no issues will ever arise as to did I do it right or wrong?
OK. One screw should be silver for the white wire. One screw should be gold for the black wire and one screw should be green for the green wire on modern equipment. Technically the white and black wires could be switched and it will still work, but the green has to be in the right place.
I repair cords since I was 12 years old. It is so easy! I have since over 20 years some short cords after the electric tools before I use the long one. For camping I use CEE connectors between the cords.
thank you sooo much it's my 1st time trying to repair anything electrical but one of the teeth in the male end of my vacuum broke off. u make it look simple enough hopefully i dont make it worse. not sure what to cut the cord with to get a nice clean cut. i'm a single mother of 2 not many tools to work with
I had to change a female plug once but twisted the wiring around the inside tightly then tightened with screws... you just put yours in and tighten screws , is mine done properly? My female plug looked a little different then yours... but not much. My appliance plug that I redone doesn't get hot unless I have it on high heat but it always did if it got set to a high setting , nothing scorching hot, just very warm otherwise a regular heat setting stays cool.
I am a 60 year old gal. I just cut my extension cord using a hedge clipper. Instead of throwing it away, I fixed it. Of course I had to watch your video a couple times, but I sure am proud of myelf.
hey good video, just wondering, am I able to replace any 2 prong wire with another? My dog chewed the plug off right at the base so i can't connect the same 2 prong plug, but can I cut, say, my ps2, 2 prong, av cord and use that? I would have done it already but the number on the plugs don't match.
paisteboy thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to show us who have no clue about electrical stuff. I also managed to cut my cord ... hehehe . But your video really helped me, you explained yourself professionally and understandabillllly . thanks for that also. I subscribed to you and can wait to see other show me stuff. deeman
Ack, I just now cut my 100 ft cord with the exact same Home Depot hedge trimmers! I was hoping there was some safe way to fix it. I still have to go to the hardware store to pick up the plug, but maybe I can also fix some other extension cords that have been laying around useless. Thanks!
where did you get those orange plugs from? What brand is it? Lowe's has just those cheap replacement plugs and the copper wire wouldn't stay tied around the screws at the neutral or lead. It was just pain in the derrier. These seem better.

tip- In the future, try using a carabiner to run the extension cord through and attach the carabiner to back or side belt loop to keep it out of the way of the trimmer blade..
Best tutorial on RUclips. Would this work for a plug in heater?
Thanks. Yes, it will work but make sure that you get a heavy duty plug end rated for the power you are going to draw.

Thanks for the easy looking vid! Funny enough I cut mine with my neighbors trimmer! Need to be more careful! Thanks again!!
How would you have repaired it if the cut was somewhere in the middle of the lead?
Buy both ends and make two shorter cords.
tip- In the future, try using a carabiner to run the extension cord through and attach the carabiner to back or side belt loop to keep it out of the way of the trimmer blade..
Good idea!
