I love how you are so honest about why you were looking for another pattern when you had the perfect one. I think a lot of knitters do this at least once. I know I have stayed away from patterns because I thought it was too hard and then when I did it I was like why did I put that off for so long. I like your tips and tricks. I’m going to use the different color stitch markers for a capelet I’m knitting right now. Two of the wedges require me to Purl every other row but I get in groove and don’t realize that wedge was the one I had to Purl. I’m hoping changing the color stitch marker will remind me.
I love stitch markers!!! Both the light bulb and the itty bitty round plastic ones.... I use the light bulbs for counting rows and the plastic ones for marking on my needle, because they're not dangly and don't get in the way...... I think I got a divided box of about 1,200 light bulb markers and mini safety pins for about $8 on Amazon, I definitely did a happy dance!!!.... Update, I checked & the same one is $12.99 now, but STILL a great deal...
I just started to learn to knit and keep on starting projects and starting them over, of course, I don't know how to make a sweater or even a sock. I remember learning how to knit in Jr.High which was many years ago, I'll be 60 this coming February and graduated in 1980, so that is many years ago. I'm willing to take any tips tricks or advice any experienced knitter can throw my way. I don't even know how to measure and didn't know there were so many different knitting stitches there were but have learned a few o them. I'm looking to make a lace table runner for my dining room which we just remodeled and want to look kinda country and a little victorian, my house was built in 1864, so I think this old dog is ready to learn some new tricks.
Great video. The same concerns that we’re stopping you from all over patterns are the concerns that I have always had. I will take a page out of your book and get out of my own way.❤
Do you or anyone in this thread, have suggestions on how to keep track when your chart has multiple motifs/patterns with different row counts? For example 2 chart sweater with 8 panels and each panel pattern has a different number of row repeats....
I do the exact same thing with colored stitch markers for both charts and pattern changes. It saves a lot of time in the long run by catching mistakes as you go Here another place for those bulb markers in the plastic storage case: www.hobbylobby.com/Yarn-Needle-Art/Notions-Tools/Yarn-Tools/Bright-Bulb-Pins/p/80876172
What wonderful hints. Also it’s amazing to me that you worry that you’re not capable of doing a project. Caleb you are an amazing knitter, and you give confidence in me that I can be just as good with practice. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Just break it down and with colors, what great ideas. I've never been into separating steps for anything by colors but I'm going to buy more stitch markers like you suggested and start looking for my first sweater. You're honesty helps build community.
Thank you! Those are great tips. I’m working on The Oxbow cardi right now, and I have the sleeves and half the body done. But I’m nervous to finish, to do the neck shaping and the place where the arms go (I can’t remember the wording), so it’s hibernating for now 😬 I just need to take a deep breath, clear my mind, and try! Thank for the video…always great to see you!
You got this! I do that when a project makes me nervous too (and I think it’s so necessary sometimes to take a breather), but you can absolutely do it and you’ll do great when you pick it back up!
I also use stitch markers when making a lot of increases. I pick a number that correlates to the increase (say 21 for seven k2, M1L) and every time I increase, I figure out how many stitches should be between those markers and check each set before I move on. It goes a bit slowly but not nearly as slowly as tinking.
I do something similar when I am working raglan increases on a sweater! Definitely can take time, but sooo much less than sinking... you are right! Thanks for sharing your process :-)
Gundren lives in Reno! I’m hoping I’ll run into her one of these days, because we shop and hang out in some of the same places, chat with the same people. She’s kind of my hero!
OMG this video xouls not have come at a better time. I purchased a kit for a garment that has a lace insert on the side and am foing to move it to the back. I've never knitted a garment. I was decided I would knit a sock pattern before I started this doe all the reasons you gave. Wish me luck
The garment is from ravelery and called Cascata t-shirt by Rosarios 4. I was in a yarn shop and she had made it and put a kit together. Oh love the sock pattern from Earthtone girl you suggested.
Absolutely agree with everything you said here Caleb! . Those coloured bulb stitch markers are my fav as they do not “pull” on the stitches as well as being extremely light weight. I’ve been stalling with starting my summer sweater that includes cables and colourwork - having angst about the time/mental commitment. Now let me take a page out of your book “and get out of my own way” and start work! But first… I need to buy some summer yarn. 😝
Thanks so much for your tips. I have been knitting forever, but never with a chart and decided to try one. The biggest help so far is your suggestion to put stitch markers at the start of each pattern repeat.....SO helpful! I'm a little nervous about keeping the pattern going when i get to the decreases for the armholes, etc.....but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!
I am doing the same thing right now with a cowl pattern! It’s a super easy pattern but I use a loom so I’m soooo intimidated by trying to convert a knitting pattern to a loom pattern. There are so many letters that stand for crazy things! I’m going to try the swatch suggestion you made in your beginner video. Thanks so much!
These are great tips. Thanks for sharing! I normally get to the end of my row and find out I've messed up somewhere and have to backtrack to figure out what happened. These will help me not clown the pattern
Thank you for this awesome video, love the chart tips and especially your honest feelings about being intimidated by a knit pattern, design, size etc. sometimes we do have to just get out of our own way. I look forward to seeing your progress on the beautiful cardigan.
Thank you Caleb - I’ve been a knitter for many years but too stubborn to use stitch marker in the belief ‘oh I’ll know where I am and what I’m doing” but I don’t!🤦🏼♀️Even more so now I’m older, so I’ve taken to coloured stitch markers and it’s wonderful! It really does take the stress and anxiety out of knitting detailed patterns. Btw, I love your videos and could listen to you talk all day!😍Love from South Wales, UK.💐
Thank you so much!!! And I’m sure most people would be fine without the stitch markers… but no need to skip something that makes your life easier. Haha. That’s what I tell myself. It just makes it more enjoyable because there is less worry and less concentration required :-)
As simple as it sounds, that first tip is SO good! Charts scare the life out life out of me because I know I already mess up cables in patterns with only 4-5 cables at all. Definitely gonna try out that tip & thanks for another great video!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!! I used to skip the stitch markers (mostly out of… laziness, I guess. Haha), but I just find that they really help me stay focused which makes it more fun.
I love your honesty about being intimidated by the pattern. Color-coded stitch markers and lifelines are crucial for me while working a complicated pattern. Keep knitting! Love your channel ❤ 💕 ♥
Great tips, thanks! I also find a lifeline really helpful so I don’t have to tear back so far if I do screw up! That sweater looks amazing, can’t wait to see it when it is done.
I have not worked on charts until recently but stay with a simple knit or purl repeat style. The advice is greatly appreciated and I look forward to expanding my comfort in knitting
I love the timbre and pitch of your voice, it's weirdly relaxing for me!

Thank you for the stitch marker link. Can’t find my markers anywhere. They will turn up now that I’ve ordered more. Great suggestions in your video.

Thanks for the tips. Im trying my first knitted chart and I've pulled it out 3 times now. I will try the stitch markers.
agree, with everything you said :) I follow similar tips when knitting charts

Really helpful tips Caleb! TFS!
Thanks!! Just ordered the stitch markers!! Your sweater is GORGEOUS…thanks for the great tips!
Thank you!!! I’m glad you found the tips helpful! :-)

Thanks, I have struggled with charts and just about decided to give up trying to use them. I will follow your method next time I try a chart.
You can do it! I hope there tips help!

like the tips i always have to go to the being and count when i mess up
I hope they help! I used to have problems with charts as well, and these things have helped out so much!
I can relate to so much of this, and it was quite an enjoyable listen. I will definitely subscribe to your channel, thanks.
Awesome, thank you!
You’re so darn adorable!!!
Yes to stitch markers!!!
BEAUTIFUL SWEATER
Gundren lives in Reno! I’m hoping I’ll run into her one of these days, because we shop and hang out in some of the same places, chat with the same people. She’s kind of my hero!
And yes, she produces such beautiful and (to me) complex patterns, so it’s very intimidating IMO
Wow! That's pretty cool! Does she teach classes at all out there?

Good luck! I’m sure you’ll do great 😊 What garment pattern are you knitting?
The garment is from ravelery and called Cascata t-shirt by Rosarios 4. I was in a yarn shop and she had made it and put a kit together. Oh love the sock pattern from Earthtone girl you suggested.
Great tips. I also like the color of the sweater
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the tips. Very useful. I like the idea of breaking up the pattern into manageable parts.
I’m glad you found it useful!! 💚💚
Really enjoy how you share your thought process behind your work. And the tips are so useful and clear! Thank you for sharing!😄

im sitting here like ah that makes so much sense... now the key will be actually putting these tips into action for my next project :')
Oooh yes! What good tips for patterned knitting 😍 I love the idea of breaking it up into smaller chunks. Also, What is a slog?
Yes! Love this. I also break up the pattern like this .... much easier to keep track of
Great tips and the emotional part of being out of your own way!! Thank you!!
Thank you for this awesome video, love the chart tips and especially your honest feelings about being intimidated by a knit pattern, design, size etc. sometimes we do have to just get out of our own way. I look forward to seeing your progress on the beautiful cardigan.
Of course we know this ……. We just need to DO it! Thanks

Wow! Thanks for sharing! Stitch markers make knitting sooooo much fun! Trying doing repeats without them leads to a big headache!!
100% agree!
Thank you for the very helpful hints. I really enjoy your videos. I’m going to order the stitch markers that you suggested.
You’re welcome snd thank you so much 💚

Great tricks for working up intimidating patterns!
Thank you 😊
