  • An intellectually charged and thought-provoking event between two influential voices, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Kathleen Stock. They engage in a riveting discussion on "Cancellations and Free Speech in Navigating the Youth Gender Crisis." In this unique and timely conversation, Ayaan, a renowned advocate for free speech and women's rights, shares her insights on the alarming rise of cancel culture and its impact on open dialogue, particularly in the context of the evolving challenges surrounding youth gender identity. Kathleen Stock, a leading philosopher and scholar, brings her expertise to the table, delving into the nuances of free speech in the midst of a growing societal shift in perspectives on gender. Together, they explore the delicate balance between fostering a respectful environment for diverse voices and the imperative of maintaining the freedom to express dissenting opinions in the face of cancel culture.

I’m 77 and very grateful to my parents who let me be a tomboy. They were so smart. They knew enough to let time be the solution, to not criticize me for not wanting to wear skirts or dresses, to basically ignore me and to let me handle the bullies, both girls and boys. I learned a lot from the boys I played with in terms of athletic skills and limitations, in terms of repairing bikes and etc. Independence is freedom and tomboyism is not genetic or contagious. Neither of my kids were tomboys but I encouraged independent behaviours and passed on feminist (old school) thinking.

I had a similar experience as a child, and played outside a Iot 😊. I remember hearing the word tomboy used about me ( both to me and about me) and thinking how it didn't fit me. I wasn't bothered to respond although I did think that it was an odd saying, and I knew it was about me liking climbing trees and running around - which most kids like to do of course). I hope I passed/ pass on [old school] feminism, too.

@@theAHAfoundation Social transition is the first step of a healthcare intervention, it can be as simple as a child changing pronouns and name. This is the start of gender affirming care. Some schools feel its acceptable to start this without consideration for consulting parents or healthcare professionals? The impact of this intervention was reported in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The article entitled, “Gender Identity 5 Years After Social Transition” was published 13 July 2022, and it was based on a study that started with 319 children. The average age of subjects when they joined the study was 8 years old.
The result is simply this: after five years 94% of the children continue to persist in their transgender identity. What this means is there is now a large number of the subjects in this study that have already moved on to medicalization - the next stage in the protocol - and this involves using puberty blocking drugs and then cross sex hormones. The researchers expect the children who have not reached puberty, and continue to identify as transgender, to eventually follow in this medicalization path.

I was a tomboy in the 60s and my parents also were great. I played sports with guys darts built forts and was well liked i was never bullied. This is dangerous what is going on today. I also was not masculine as a tomboy. I was a very pretty tomboy definitely a girl. 75 percent of tomboys are heterosexual woman. I knew other tomboys they did not seem masculine. I think thats a stereotype.

Growing up I hated being a girl. Thankfully I had no idea what trans was. I knew I wasn't like other girls, and never fit in . Last year I was diagnosed with autism. Autistic kids are so susceptible to this because we have an internal sense of 'I'm not like everyone else '. When you suggest trans to a child like that it can seem like the answer.

A story from my family: In 1920 one of my relatives was a very loud, strong, boisterous woman. She was attracted to, and married a quiet gentle widower, a man with six children. They had two more children together, and her adopted children loved her dearly. She managed the farm which allowed him to work part time and spend time with his children. He was remembered as often sitting on the porch steps telling stories to delighted children. My point is that embodying roles opposite to stereotypes was not being a man or woman, just a different expression of it.

There are exceptions, there are outliers. How much of an outlier or being gender nonconforming is an issue personally that causes gender dysphoria to develop ?
The rules are not fixed but norms that do cause people to view others differently especially before transitioning asking questions like "what are you". Also just the way it is.

    Hello, everyone!
I wish more mature people could share their teenage journey for other to understand that feeling lonely/alone/trapped in your body/isolated/anxious/shamed of your body transformations are all part of the process of growing up and transforming from a child to a more mature person. The confusion, the depression are not signs that is something wrong with you or your body. It is everyone's path, it's just life. Sometimes even as an artistic person you will deal with so much internal struggle, but here lies the beauty of Becoming and finding your true self. The acceptance of all you are it's the real and only finding of ones self. I am so sorry that young people are so confused and hurt and they really dont have a tribe of healthy people to help them. In the end we all came from a woman's womb, there is nothing to debate about it.

That would help many that are being influenced by social media etc. There is no debate that everyone sees me as a female & women when i walk out my door. If i wore no makeup ( i wear little ) , if i wore men's clothes people would just be confused, If i had not transitioned a little less so. This is not about you or replacing you but us fitting in WELL to society & eliminating long standing gender dysphoria.

Fleming's point about the loss of the family as a central reference for the formation of one's idea of who we are is VERY important.
The neo-liberalism of the 1980s has a lot to answer for.
Society's familial cohesion was derided as inconsequential and a hinderance to the individual's economic self realisation.
I think this atomisation and loss of the family has had unrecognised consequences.

Thank you for this very important and insightful chat.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali mentioned the "natural family", while Kathleen Stock repeatedly reduced the term to the "nuclear family". At one point Ayaan Hirsi Ali embraced this merely sociological term.
Well, the matter is not - only - sociology, and not only a modernist vernacular structure.
The crucial question is not only, whether two adults care for kids in a family-like setting (and not any larger community of adults). The crucial question is, "who we are", and how we are linked to each other in our embodied reality. If the body matters - and it does! - it also matters how a child is biologically related to the people who care for it. Not only our sexual identity, but also the "self", the self-understanding and identity of a human person is closely linked to his/her holistic and bodily descent. Biological lineage is a central part of this: Yes, it is crucial to know where we come from, who our ancestors were - or might have been. It is important to relate to them, either affirmingly or in a distancing-critical mood, whether the relationship is/was harmonious or wounded. Children raised by foster parents, or who are being adopted will need to be allowed to grieve and mourn for the crucial, existential loss not to be with both their biological parents. They will need to understand and to reconcile with the circumstances of the separation. This is a lifelong process, hopefully a healing one, and it will be boosted in their own mating and parenting phases as well as in high age.
It is, therefore, no banality not to know your biological father, or the woman who carried you in her womb. It does matter; how many siblings you might have (part of the "nuclear family", too), where your grandparents came from, how they lived, how they looked like, what health issues they were exposed to and how they coped with the challenges of life. Attachment and self-identification occurs - not only, but to a huge extent - over our biological chemistry, in the resemblances we discover in eye-to-eye-contacts, because not only our consciousness, but also our genes, our lymbic system "remember" and react. The programmatic relativisation of the "natural family" is certainly a dead end in Western civilisation.

The thing about the push to surgically and chemically transition these children is that it takes their fertility and their sexual pleasure. Their very sexual urges are being destroyed and the outcome is never what is promised. It is a cruel abuse, and I can't help but think there is an underlying misogyny and self-hatred within the trans movement which seeks to take revenge on feminism

Transtrenderism (spelling on purpose) is a modern disease happening in the developed world, the rich countries. I believe this is because indiscriminate activism is the only thing those activists (just them, not the individuals who actually have skin in the game) have left to do. Most democracies have charters of rights and gays and lesbians have earned them after decades of righteous activism. But this new development is crazy.

Chopping my body up because I didn't embody the Stepford ideal wouldn't have solved anything. Who thought it was "progress" to break oneself to fit into a broken world? I did my time trying to fit into that nonsense, now I'm a 57 year old woman in jeans and flannel shirts, and that's exactly how I'm staying. If anyone thinks I'm not what a woman is supposed to be, the problem isn't ME, it's THEM. My body is fine, your mind is what needs to change.

Artificial womb really is just a more advanced incubator for preterm babies, scentists are working towards saving infants at earlier gestation age. Me personally, I don't believe artificial womb will ever replace pregnancy, which is a shame. I think we must work to reduce an enormous suffering women go through to keep human race reproducing. But I imagine Kathleen as a philosopher has a different perspective and is looking into the future and foreseeing ethical dilemmas that might arise. Who could have known that IVF technology will give rise to surogacy industry that created new ways to exploit women in poor countries, outsource suffering for the benefit of the wealthy.

When feminists are criticizing "the family," they are criticizing the DEVALUING of women/mothers and inequities in marriage. I think Ayaan's view on this is superficial, and just reproduces the existing misogynist insistence on a hierarchy of male/female (superior/inferior).

    • @umwha
      @umwha 8 месяцев назад +1

You do have a point. Feminist crituque of 'family' and 'marriage' was meant to criticize power imbalances. However, it dosent stop there. Much in the same way, feminsts developing the idea of 'gender role' was a logical, reality-based analysis of how social roels are constructed. But in both of these critiques, feminism has far exceeded any logical point. Feminists generally belive in Genderism now, and you wont find any talking positively about long-term monogamou relationships. That is traditional heteronormative culture. You will find feminists extolling the virtues of polyamory, destigmatising female promiscuity, affirming the childless woman with no affirmation for women who become mothers.

@@umwha That is a lie. I know, because I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and that BS was a complaint from the get go. The push back, derision, and accusations against feminists (i.e. non-compliant women) was simultaneous to the origin of feminism, and this anti-woman (anti-feminist) narrative has not changed much. Why? Like I said in my post, it is about values, and ultimately the dismissal and devaluing of women and motherhood that existed in the culture well before feminism emerged on the historical scene. The problem is not feminism, but men, and their resentment and misogyny.

    • @jujutrini8412

You will also find feminists who talk positively about long term monogamous relationships and affirm mothers. I am one of them. Feminism needed to critically examine “family” and “marriage” because the way that society was structured before definitely had negative affects on women. Women were basically just chattel in a marriage before ie men were allowed to rape their wives until relatively recently and it’s down to feminism why that is even considered as unacceptable in society now.

To start with "Reality matters" is a distortion of what is going on and leveraging the idea that policies can easily & fairly or even consistently be made on by sex alone or SHOULD be when there is a modern concept of no discrimination on the basis of sex alone. What activists demand in the form of acceptance of gender ideology & queer theory , forcing change to society ( as feminists are still doing ) is a different discussion from what to do with us as children & adults being very GNC with severe Gender dysphoria. Yes the activist push the Trans umbrella that Trans women are women which is inaccurate and conflating the issue as Stock does ...no one would say i was a "man" before transitioning nor now but male , biological male yes. Stock does this because she does not want to recognize ,acknowledge that many transsexuals easily pass blend in to live as women are SEEN as women hence being against transitioning full stop . Being a feminist that thinks gender & the feminine / masculine are socially constructed is part of the nonsense that allowed gender ideology & queer theory to develop in feminist dominated university departments , to quote a scientist " gender is the software to sex" ( Heather Heying evolutionary biologist ) . It is not an accident that people like myself score very highly in female psychological traits with the "big five " and why people are at odds with us from childhood . Self ID simply never should have happened but has for nefarious reasons including approving transitioning for people that could not possibly fit in so they lobbied to change the DSM years ago because they were gatekept .Odd Stock does not mention that people with gender recognition certificates have a coding into their health care to recognize them which is fine so long as it is not used down the track to identify us all as Kellie Jay Keen wants to do and reverse our documents .
Redifining words , making up new words, censoring started in women's studies , when i medically transitioned every female were completely supportive of me unquestioningly. Two people said "are you sure " both men, THIS needs to be talked about because women swing voting , policies, institutions etc in every western country when you pretend that women & men think the same this problem cannot be addressed. BTW it has always been the case that "same sex attracted" people want to transition, this has been consistent over many many decades and why not ? I still sleep with men just not gay men.

Obviously I don't know you, but I feel very strongly that I would have seen you as a "man" before your transition. I believe that we are all comprised of "masculine" and "feminine" traits and that having more "masculine" traits doesn't render a woman a man (or vice versa). I don't claim to understand what gender dysphoria feels like, but could it be partly related to rigid notions of masculinity vs femininity? Do you believe that you could have found a place of peace with your male-ness if your feminine qualities weren't seen as disqualifying you from "manhood" in some way?

@@ponygirl1716 Because of how you have responded in your first sentence i will try to answer.
You said "feel very strongly" I think that you are coming from a social constructionist, blank slate ,feminist view point that humans are made to be feminine or masculine from birth by culture which i do not believe. I believe in what i can observe with my own eyes & evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology. The place where i would agree is that people do have some masculine / feminine traits. We are a sum of all our total characteristics to a degree , people can be influenced to a degree or shifted slightly. When people read us as a gender & sex us it is not just our reproductive parts . To answer your last question the answer is a very clear no, my gender dysphoria would not have gone away & i would never been comfortable fitting in , nor date who i want to . Everything that was a problem is now an advantage quite literally
You seem to forget that the world and humans are naturally structured around a heterosexual society , all i needed to do to fit perfectly into a female "role" as feminists call it was transition. By doing so i have not forced society to change as feminist, queer theorists are trying to do .

It seems anti-intellectual, at times essentialist (women's rights), anti-individual and paternalistic (the poor parents).
