Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
'Barcelona' was the first single to be taken from the album of the same name, in October 1987. You can see the original David Mallet video elsewhere on this channel. This alternative footage was filmed at the open air La Nit festival at Montjurich Castle in Barcelona on 8th October 1988, by Gavin Taylor. See also the beautiful 'How Can I Go On' and 'The Golden Boy', also filmed at this event.

To the fans, Barcelona is just one of his extraordinary hits, but for Freddie, it was the pinnacle of his career. He called it “a dream come true, although I wondered if our voices would match or she would accept to do it. I hope the people in Barcelona, well everyone, I hope they like it. It’s for the whole world."
Thank you for this incredible masterpiece, Freddie! 😇❤️

FM...wrote this song for Montserrat after he met her for the first time in the lobby of a fancy hotel...in her home town where she was born... Barcelona! He was nervously waiting..and impatiently pacing back and forth in the lobby of this fancy hotel...as Montserrat was late getting there...she was also very nervous to meet the great showman Freddy Mercury! How Adorable!! Respect and Love for one another's musical abilities! ❤ He commented upon hearing her sing for the first time... that she had the greatest voice of anyone in the world including himself!!! Sweet!! Montserrat walked through the Hotel doors....Freddy spotted her....and the lobby full of people ...just parted the the Red Sea...as they made their way towards each other. As they shook hands Montserrat thought to herself...omg his hands are freezing cold...colder than mine...so that shows me that he respects me as much as I respect him!!! Awe!!! How sweet!!! So.they both hit it off and stayed awake all night long singing together laughing together & most of all ...dreaming together!!! What a masterpiece they have given us to treasure for all time!! RIP FREDDY & MONTSERRAT!!! You both will never be forgotten!!! ❤💖💛💙💜💚

After Barcelona was selected to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, Mercury was approached to write a song as a theme for the forthcoming games. The idea was to create a duet with Caballé, as she was from the city. He had been a long-standing admirer of her and she in turn grew to respect his talents very highly.

As improbable a duo as they may seem, they recorded an entire album together as well as this duet. Freddie had a lot of respect and professional admiration for Montserrat and sought her out to collaborate musically. Barcelona was her home town and he wrote the song for her.

You realize they are not really singing live and it is pre-recorded in a recording studio., right? You can see there are no microphones in front of them. There is no outshining Caballe, her singing is always spectacular without strutting around and posing. Even here, Mercury is a bit rough. He did compose a marvelous opening.

I'm from the former East Block and I remember 1984. I was 14 years old and in the morning, on the way to school, they played song I Want to Break Free in the only state radio. It was a shock because at that time we had a totalitarian regime and everything from the west, including music, was censored and could not be officially broadcast. Great song and especially daring for that years. And since then he is in my memory like a singer with a specific voice. However, I perceived him marginally only- just then was the gold era of Heavy metal and Depeche Mode for me. It was full of great bands and singers and Freddy was one of many only. As the world goes, only after his death I began to realize, how genius Freddy Mercury was. Its enormous energy was like from another galaxy. And I'm really sorry that I lived when he was here and I didn't take the chance to go to at least one of his concerts, to see his show and to hear his voice called. Honor his memory.

The magic of Barcelona has been dying as millions and millions of tourists have been coming to the city. The soul and spirit of the city is no longer like the one that inspired the declaration of love of Freddie Mercury.

Judith Shipstad Yes, Freddie was a climber. He would have climbed every mountain big or small. It was what it was..... He said once im an interview "I've done it all" or was it "There's nothing i haven't done" Well, I have to disagree....if that aweful disease hadn't shortened his life he would have sang with many many others. My little bro drowned im 1984 he loved music... Everything on the top during the late 70s early 80s being just an 11 y.o. young boy. He would jam to his favorits. Two being Queen and The Gap Band. Makes me tear everytime i go into deep thoughts dreaming of what my brother would have been like. Would he have had children. Crazy because i would give anything to get a glimpse of him as an adult with the simplest stuff like arm pit hairs and a first girlfriend.. Same with Freddie, although he lived an outgoing life past his 30s i still feel us fans didn't see the best of him. Although we were blessed with what he did leave for us.
His music will last as long as mother earth lives.
      Rest In Paradise....
