Greetings, this is "COOLO Soundsystem" with a video sonic report from the frontlines of rock. This time, I took a road trip to the hills of West Virginia, to the birthplace of Don Knotts, Morgantown, where I witnessed the mighty Messer Chups in action. They are a Russian outfit who play a wicked mix of surf, horror, and rockabilly, and they started out in Hamburg, Germany, in 1998 - the same city where the Beatles learned their craft. This was my second time seeing them, and they blew me away with a more raw, concise, and intense show, influenced by the atmosphere of the venue, "123 Pleasant Street", a classic rock club with all the bells and whistles. The show was warmed up by two vibrant local bands, who had their own loyal following. I guess that's why the Messer Chups had to do their soundcheck on stage, right before they kicked off their set, which you can see here. They didn't have any of their usual visual projections, like clips from old horror movies, but they didn't need them, because they had the crowd in the palm of their hand, and they even got them to pogo along to some of their tunes. The Messer Chups did not let me down, they gave me a pure shot of rock and roll, although I would have loved to hear an encore. My favorite surf band. Olegs compositions and playing are highly original and his tone is spot on.
Check out the growlers. Start with their old stuff.
He took a lot of inspiration from Soviet cartoons. Check out "Nu Pogodi" (The Wolf and the Hare); there are traces of Messer Chups all over the score.
Surf rock, y'all. It's a thing. But Messer Chups do their own thing with it. It sounds good!

Gotta tell ya..this band rocks. Oleg is the master of the whammy bar and bending notes. Svetlana strong and steady on the bass. 'Surf style' drumming is deceptively simplistic..while the drum patterns sound rather repetitive throughout the tunes, the tempos are fast and it takes a lot of energy to keep up that pace throughout a show. I've tried it and I run out of gas after a couple of tunes. Kudos to their drummers for keeping up the pace. Just received their 'Spookarama' double album 'best of' collection great fun to listen to. Just straight forward fun music.

Saw MC at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia last year. I had the great pleasure to talk to them after the show. Great people, great band!!!! .
Talented and clever and dark at times. They do sound a lot like The Ventures. the songs all sound like Pipeline or Peter Gunn Theme. i bet they sound cool live. have fun in the states.
