    Ireland's wonderful broad gauge locomotives! It's interesting how this 4-4-0 looks somewhat midsize in pictures without people, but then when you see another with someone next to it, you notice the size difference more.

    GNRI: "Hey can I copy your homework?"
    LMS: "Sure, just make it look different so that it doesn't look like you just copied it."
    GNRI: "sure thing."
    And thats how the Class V was made.

    • @Spud607
      @Spud607 4 года назад +6

      Then the GNR(I) needed somthing bigger.
      GNR(I): Hey can I copy your homework?
      Southern Railway: Sure just change it a bit so it doesnt look obvious
      GNR(I) Sure thing.
      Then the VS class was born.

    • @Spud607
      @Spud607 4 года назад +1

      @Dan T technically speaking they were not bigger in size but hey have a lot more power. I am comparing them to the Schools because they have smoke deflectors (like the schools), 3 cylinders (like the schools) and massive drive wheels (like the schools). The only real difference between them is the fact it is a V class on top of a VS class frame. I think the size of the drivers and cylinders is a bit different aswell but im not sure. Thats where the "just change it a bit" came from.

    • @Spud607

      The VS class looks like a copy of the SR schools. How was the LMS copied?

    The NER had many compounds that worked, notably including the 3CC which inspired Johnson and the 4CC atlantics which were very highly regarded, but not replicated due to a dispute around patent royalties.

    I wonder if some Irish locomotives like this one can fit on British standard gauge track like they did on their own track in Ireland, can they?

    • @hibernia91
      @hibernia91 6 лет назад

      Unfortunately no. Ireland uses a broad gauge of 5ft 3in as opposed to Britain's standard 4ft 8 and a half. It would probably be an expensive job to re gauge Irish loco's to fit the British network.

    • @gquayle
      @gquayle 6 лет назад

      Daniel O'Hare. You could probably do it by putting the wheels inside the frames and adding outside cranks and rods. Making them look abit like 'City of Truro' or a dukedog

    • @Spud607
      @Spud607 5 лет назад

      British engines can come to ireland butvirish engines cant go to britain. The frames are too wide.

      Indeed, 5 ft 3in is our standard :)

    • @Spud607
      @Spud607 5 лет назад

      Yes. We use 5ft 3 inch gauge because our land is much softer than britains because we are britains rain shield. If ireland wasnt in the way, the uk would get much more rain. Therefore making ground softer and its more likely to sink. 5ft 3" gauge has a larger footprint. Thus its less likely to sink.

      The larger gauge is cause of a gauge disagreement. 5 3 was chosen as a standard as it was the middle ground between the 2 already built lines.
