- This short film stars Edgar Bergen and his young pal, Charlie McCarthy, the hugely popular radio duo. Bergen plays a judge, and McCarthy is a young boy on a school trip to find out how the justice system works.

Creepy how he admitted he loved his puppet more than his daughter. He had a special room for him at home and put him in his will yet left his daughter nothing.
He never said such a thing. He did have a room where he kept all his figures, that's true. He also left all his money to his wife which is what most husband's do. When she passed the rest was divided amongst the daughter and son.
He never said that! Candy was a wack job or she wouldn't written a book trashing her dad.

Edgar and Charlie appeared in numerous Warner Bros.-Vitaphone shorts from 1931 through 1936, while they were looking for their "big break" in vaudeville and night clubs. It wasn't until their engagement at Helen Morgan's night club in New York in 1936 that Bergen got the idea that Charlie should look like a "man about town" for that club's clientele- and from then on, he was decked out in top hat, white tie, and tails....

Walter Thompson ad agency {representing Rudy Vallee's radio sponsor, Standard Brands} caught their act, and convinced Vallee that he shoud feature Edgar and Charlie as guests on his "ROYAL GELATIN HOUR" that December. They were an instant hit, and were soon featured regularly on "THE CHASE AND SANBORN HOUR" (also a Standard Brands product) in May 1937, eventually becoming the stars of the program...
Thanks for the info. Many of the radio shows are freely available on Old Time Radio websites. They're still very funny, and some of the special guests (Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, W.C. Fields, Mae West etc.) are fabulous. Do you happen to know if anyone's ever written a biography of Bergen (and McCarthy)? The closest I have is Candice Bergen's Knock on Wood.

That's what I say, I was watching sha na na and him and his dummy were on there but he was much older so I thought his mouth was moving cause he was getting old. Then I found this when he was younger and he's never been a good ventriloquist cause you see his mouth moving when the dummy is suppose to be talking
