National Security Law is not interpreted under Hong Kong court and common law system. Its definition and usage is controlled by PRC. This is an evidence of PRC breaking promise of "one country two systems" and the common law system. It is in doubt that how we can keep on trusting these political changes not affecting Hong Kong economy and financial development. If the PRC cannot show respect on the common law and ease the abuse of use on national security law, who can imagine how foreign people can be willing to invest Hong Kong under PRC law system and still feel safe? but at least it is not surprise that some rich people are already in danger like Alibaba's Jack Ma and Appledaily's Jimmy.

_"National Security Law is not interpreted under Hong Kong court and common law system."_
Of course it is (IDIOT) since Hong Kong have an independent judiciary, and as we all know, Hong Kong have no extradition treaty with the PRC.
It DOES NOT contradict the "One country 2 systems" and IT DOES NOT violate the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
The reason the PRC enacted the National Security Law was that Hong Kong have been obliged to do it themselves but never got it done.
If the National security law did not confirm with Hong Kong basic law it would be struck down by the Hong Kong court of final appeal.
Would claim the British former chief prosecutor of Hong Kong to be a trustworthy source on this.
Grenville Cross was the Director of Public Prosecutions in Hong Kong 1997-2009 so he should know a lot about the law.

@@qinby1182 Hong Kong’s sovereignty was returned to China in 1997. Governance depends on sovereignty. Hong Kong HAS NEVER BEEN SOVEREIGN so really China COULD do "anything" but it has not since it follows the joint the sino-british joint declaration.
Since the Basic Law is the product of the the sino-british joint declaration China CAN NOT change this without breaking the the sino-british joint declaration, which it has not done.
So really "What if's" and hypotheticals does not really matter.
As it is the the sino-british joint declaration is followed and hence the basic law, ANYTHING violating the basic law would be struck down by the Hong Kong final appeal court.
What happens after 2047 is another discussion.

of the People’s Republic of China will resume the exercise of sovereignty

Given what I've heard from adults who actually lived in HK or has family in HK, I support implementation of the HK National Security Law. Any society must have law and order in order to be sustainable. So called "violations" of civil liberties are excuses to destabilize a sensitive and impactful region. For example, patriotism should be a requisite of any government official or candidate seeking office. All elected and appointed officials in the US must swear an oath to the allegiance of the country. Would anyone want an official who doesn't love or isn't loyal to the country he/she is supposed to serve?

I do believe that many people disagreed to this bill and that I respect and accept. They demostrated peacefully and rationally. Unfortunately, the protests have changed from a peaceful march to a city~widespread demostration. Many people brutally and violently attacked the pro~Beijing camps public figures and government officers, demanding for five purposes.
