Due to their nature as being more magically talented, the use of close quarters weaponry like SMGs have become a popular choice of sidearm amongst melee infantryman. Unlike machine guns, the SMGs take less magic to operate while still being fully automatic, making them less risky, albeit trading off that risk factor for less powerful projectiles being shot out of the gun. SMGs are often a popular choice amongst troops who fight in close range, due to SMGs not absorbing as much life force from the users, they don't require as much training to be effective and to not be a burden on the person wielding the gun.
