So you’re right that the standard way to play that part is higher up on the neck around the fifth fret, which is definitely how I would play it on an electric guitar. But on the acoustic I prefer these classical-style fingerings, which take advantage of the open strings to create a fuller sound. So I guess my answer to you question is that it depends on your instrument and what you are trying to achieve. Hope that helps!

I think you mean the right-hand fingerpicking pattern? For that I use index, middle and thumb. In a nutshell it's alternating middle and index for all plucked notes on the high E string, and thumb for all notes on the B. Hope that makes sense!
That was astoundingly brilliant. I just recently started trying to play this on electric, more middle and top of neck. You make me want to start over and try like this. The fingerpicking is insane though. Are you Steve Vai?
