  • I have been sharing a lot of streamer lately is seems and that probably because one of my favorite things to do early in trout season (April to early May) is to swing streamers. This pattern is a small minnow style imitation that will work great on my tandem wet fly rig. When swinging wets a lot of times I like to drop the pattern that matches the hatch on my dropper and with my point fly I use a streamer. The streamer pattern will often trigger an aggression strike out of the trout because it looks like it's chasing the hatching insect and "stealing" the trouts meal. I've had a lot of success over the years with this rig. When fishing this way I will often put a split shot or two in front of the streamer to get it down a little bit.
On our website, www.holsingers... we just began carrying a few product from Moonlit Fly Fishing and one of those products are Pine Squirrel and Mink Zonker strips. We carry them in a few different colors which allows you to tie this pattern in a variety of color variations. One of the reasons I really like these Zonkers is because with the mink and squirrels you get more uniformity with hair length than you do with rabbit. These Zonkers from Moonlit are some of the nicest ones we've found. The uniformity of the cuts of the strips are incredible. I highly suggest checking them out. Please head over to our website for the Zonkers and all the other materials needed to tie this fly. Thanks for watching. -Shawn

Nice! I like Olive pine squirrel over a translucent white dubbing brush belly palmered over a tan or gray underbelly...heavily weighted.

I like the olive backed streamers also, especially on Erie for the steelhead run.

How would this swim with a cone head or dumbbell eyes on it? I would be more confident with weight added to this pattern. Have you fished this pattern with weight added to it to get it down to the fish? Your thoughts?

I'm fishing this as a small minnow sized pattern. You could definitely tie it with dumbbells or a cone. I'm just trying to keep it small. I like to swing these small patterns like this on my wet fly rig with a team of wets. I don't like a lot of weight when swinging wets. I can always add a split shot or two to my line and adjust my weight as needed.
