For me, The Little Mermaid was the turning point. I don't actually hate the film, and there some things about I like (Grimsby getting a little more to do, performances that were mostly ok), but it was the first time I really felt that I was watching a hollow films with actors stuck having to repeat things that the original did. And while Halle Bailey was fine and is not responsible for the creative decisions, I hated the argument of 'a mermaid is a fictional being so her race doesn't matter.' Then changing it means nothing, and given there's a new kids show where Ariel is black, Disney clearly did it to justify the remake and try to make an appeal to that audience. I can't speak for African-Americans/black people, but I also thought, "Does Disney really think that they will embrace a 'new classic' that is that same story white people already did? Especially when there ARE stories about mermaids in African culture?"
Disney doesn't understand black people. They hire to the weird ones that think they represent us but actually sell us out for jobs that were stolen from white men with talent
yeah but Disney wanted to pander to black americans, not africans , africans have their own issues but it doesn't include "lack of representation in western culture", they don't give 2 cra*s abt that . Also in african legends , mermaids are evil and hate humans and that includes Mami wata , the queen mermaid , who herself is inspired by the european legend (wata= water ) . Don't trust Wiki and the western sources, africans didn't "venerate" mami wata , she's seen as an evil spirit there, trust africans speaking abt it on reddit or other forums .
I'm not black nor white, but thank goodness for that last thought of yours... Also the actress playing her doesn't know the source material. The prince wasn't stalking snow he was riding past the court yeard of the castle and happened to hear her singing and went to investigate where the singing was coming from.
Bro your thinking of Mary had a little lamb not snow white The song literally goes: Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb, Mary had a little lamb who's face was white as snow Also correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the song sound like it's referring to the lamb having a face as white as snow and not Mary herself, so even if this was related to snow white the line about the color of her face isn't even a reference to her it's a reference to the lamb

I feel like Disney no longer focuses on the characters and their stories themselves, they only care about their looks and skin tones. Is there a difference between a White say Ariel in this case and a Black one?, well appart from her skin color no. If they want to do a mermaid that appeals to specific group for some reason, then just make a new character but that is something they are not going to do.
The reason they don't do that is because it's all about being reactionary. They don't want to create new characters, because their goal was never to actually TRULY represent minorities. Their goal is to supplant heretofore white things. It's to tear down. Not build up. The result: both white people and other races get the short end of the stick in the grand scheme of things.
this is a good formulation: " they are no more in the movie business but in the sermon business". Indeed, we see how much the public likes to be preached at also during entertainment. Where did the talent from Marvel's studios or Pixar or Dreamworks go?
If Disney is talking about hiring a white male for Jasmine, yeah, that makes sense, as it would for a company to not hire a person of color for a role that is for a white person. Race appropriate would be the term I would use. What doesn't make sense is to base any hiring on some DEI quota system. Especially when you're talking about characters who have traditionally been one race. That's what people hate; changing the race, sex, gender, orientation simply to satisfy some identity politics shenanigans. And to have a decidedly prejudiced application of that rule (e.g., while Disney felt okay replacing white Ariel with black Ariel in the Little Mermaid, the folklore is actually from Denmark. Disney would never replace a black actor with a white one in a property based on African folklore and that makes perfect sense).
You know, for a Kingdom Hearts x Smash Bros. fanfic, I was considering having a side story having one of the antagonizing characters look like either Iger or Kennedy
THe Rothschilds lost their power bro. They are still awful people and way too wealthy, but they were even disbarred from Israel for not paying their taxes
The short answer: BlackRock. They mandate Disney to be woke in order to fulfill their ESG score, therefore more funding from them. It doesn't matter if movies flop, it's about pushing an agenda.
The audience you had been reaching represents 98% of people who went to movies. Disney feels that they need to make movies for the remaining 2% of people with their new messaging, and they wonder why their movies are failing.
As a latina that doesn’t live in usa, africans, and latinos (not latino-american, african-american) we have so many important problems, we don’t care about being “represented”. I think the ones that want to be represented are the descendants of latinos and africans that live in the usa. So its a super small number of people who want to see this movies. Never met someone or read about a latino (born and raised in a latino country, not descendant) who said wow!!! Im being represented!!! We just make fun of Disney.
Short and simple: Blackrock investments. A bit longer: DEI and other green crap come from investors thinking they are investing in something that can't be canceled because of identity politics.

I waited patiently the full length of the video waiting for the question in the title to be answered. But if Disney is obsessed with diversity, this video doesn’t tell us why. I’ll take a stab at it. I don’t believe they are obsessed with diversity. I think that just like all public companies, they’re obsessed with money. They understand demographics, want to reach the broadest markets possible, and they’ve jumped the gun. They’re 10 to 20 years too early, and their releases are much too saturated, and far too soon. That’s only a guess. But one thing they are not is a wing of some high-power “liberal” agenda. There is no “agenda” to destroy America, turn the frogs gay, or whatever. I definitely see why people think there is, but you can’t get progressives coordinated enough to change the channel, let alone undertake some mammoth plot.
Just wanna say how impressed i am with this video. The editing, the perspective and your words are very poetic. I’m glad I found your channel. Can’t wait to dive into your videos and promote this channel to all my friends.
Okay, when the race of a character doesn’t matter to the plot or their arc, if the actress is the best one for the job, they should absolutely cast them, no matter the race. Hailey Bailey is an amazing Ariel, she perfectly fits the wide-eyed, curious character.
Exactly! When it comes to Disney remakes, the characters can be whatever race as long as they reflect and capture the personality of what made them memorable in the first place
@@robin.marvels2585 oh bowl bowl bowl bowl bowl bowl bowl bowl, your precious Bailey is not an amazing Ariel and don’t give me that it doesn’t matter about her race crap yes it does. Kelly Sue De Conick ever says " If You Don't like my Politics then Don't buy My Books " This quotes from her really reflect the Modern Disney business approach that sounded says " If You Don't like My Political Correctness , Then Youre Problematic "
Just the opening made me smile because THIS is what I've been saying this whole time: the real down to Earth people who are of minority groups want to be valued by their merit not their skin colour, gender, religion, who they kiss, etc. They are cool with characters not being just like them to the letter and will even come out and say that DEI routes will hurt the character/lore. It's too bad Hollywood doesn't give awards for being dignified.
The problem is a great blurring together of all of these things together.p, where may be you may try to tell a great story that has not been told before and someone else will call it “woke” or “DEI”.
@@mk_wizard and I’ve noticed that sensible people in minority groups don’t appreciate the changes like did you see the little video of the little girl who called out the BS and said that that wasn’t Ariel that poor child got dragged all over social media why because she spoke the truth.
If Apple buys Disney then it would come around full circle. Hopefully, other companies will pick up on the errors of Disney and other companies that have pushed DEI & learn from it. I also think that the problem is not diversity and what that means is you can create wonderful stories as a whole because you can have diverse characters. However, the main problem is when you force it into the story that is where the main issue lies. A story contains plot, conflict (both inner and outer-while inner is what usually drives the character's motivation for doing things), character, setting, point of view, as well as themes. There are both good and bad examples of this. An author's main purpose is to either inform, persuade, or entertain. Usually when it's to persuade is for essay purposes or debates. Inform is usually for educational purposes, similar to what we would see in documentaries. While the average moviegoer goes to movies or TV shows as a means of escape. And when you replace what shapes what makes good TV or films with something that would maybe only be seen in a persuasive, argumentative essay, or debate and try to force it into a story or genre where both of those narratives don't go together they evidently crash together and everyone suffers as a result. Timeless truths used to be the bread and butter that held up many of the stories we would see in movies and shows but sadly that's slowly starting to become a thing of the past.
I used to believe that it was Disney pandering to the loud minority, but I'm not convinced it is the agendas of those who are working on these new properties that have caused this drastic shift
I remember in 2018 I was pumped to see more woman protagonist in previously male dominated genres. In 2024, it's like the 50th woman protagonist, I'm saturated and not invested anymore. It was hard to feel invested in all Marvel movies in the 2010s, how am I supposed to be invested in all the "strong woman" movies of the last 4 years?
Poor Unfortunate Souls is iconic. Not as good as Hellfire but it's almost impossible to reach Hellfire's level, so getting anywhere close is still an impressive achievement.
Disney is not about entertaining anyone ,its about diversity and theology messaging throughout these projects. This is where losing all audiences older and some younger each every time because audiences don't want these messages but an escape in the entertainment by good story telling. Look in the mirror and take a look yourself sometime and will see what's happening and that's a message to these big studios.
Interesting point with studios clipping creative wings, if I were in a focus group giving the choice to watch lynch dune or any film of 2023 I would pick dune. It is so much more entertaining and interesting. And since it is a flop itself with a nice group of fans, I think that says it all.
This is so problematic. And I’m a Mixed person (white mom/black father) . Why not just create good characters and not focus on their race? It’s clear that in the past Hollywood had a huge white wash problem(cannot deny it). But you don’t fix that by flipping it the other way intentionally. It just promotes racism in a different way. So my question is. How can this change? Just stop with the messaging. You can have people of different race. Just don’t push this race problem when most people don’t care about race.
Diversity has two definitions, first is the reasonable and admirable definition that respects that everyone has different traits, gifts, and talents. The other is the Marxist or “woke” one where the oppressed has the right to discriminate and gain vengeance against the oppressors. Keep in mind that a certain Far East Asian country that refers to itself as Communist and practices Communist principles essentially controls Hollywood.
People that say they hate diversity must want TV to go back to the days when it was segmented and segregated into white and black TV. The fact we live on n racially integrated should be no excuse TV shows and movies to lack diversity.
This is ridiculous Iger was here since 2000 and made everything perfect. He can easily choose to stop going diverse and go fantasy the way Disney was ment to be. They can sell diverse shirts and dolls But they need to make the parks and movies fantasy again inside of reality
But going back to 1950s style subburbian life propaganda won't do it. I don't want the old characters, I want something that fits in our time without being to progressive or to conservative. Snow White with all her cleaning made sense in a time when most women did nothing else, when the Propaganda said that bring a housekeeper is the highest goal for a woman. That's over 70 years ago, that's not what people want nowadays aside from Nostalgia. I don't want Remakes of Originals that portay an outdated Lifestyle, I want New stories.
Your last part about the audience weary about any project being a Trojan horse is exactly why I fight against DEI. I’m a writer and my characters are black females who I fear will be see as a girl boss and a check mark
@riblo72 honestly, the way they sold the movie in commercials made think the opposite. Hollywood has trained audiences to believe action movies with female leads will be about a girlboss. Those trailers didn't help Furiosa's case. Even the commercials to release the movie to streaming and DVD, just make her look like another girlboss. But also, they waited way too long to finally put out a follow up Fury Road.
Well said , well researched, well exposed I wish people would just stop going to see new releases Disney movies , that would be our strongest protest … make them loose money
It seems to me that the focus on diversity is so much that quality storytelling gets backseat. Also racism is plainly bad not what direction it goes. Sad but true. Well my solution to that, is to vote 🗳️ with my wallet 🪪 😊
I'm gay but I don't wanna be 'represented constantly, it feels forced and cringe at times. I want diversity when it makes sense story wise, that's it. If you're trying to find a way to include everyone in a story about 14th century Britain.. just stop
Outside of all this DEI nonsense, Disney has a terrible marketing strategy. They had a built-in consumer base, and instead of just opening the inclusivity gates for new members (and I feel that a lot of folks who just like Disney anyway were mrmbers of those demographics) to add them to that base, they chose to ignore or flat out exclude that base in favor of their new friends. We saw the same with Bud Light. The marketing exec, a dyed in the wool, Ivy League, woketavist who hated that the customer base of BL was "frat boys and rednecks." Instead of a campaign touting BL for everyone, she actively pushed to replace the base, which handed BL its success for decades, for her new friends representing only what? 10% of the population? I'm an optimistic though so my hope is that it will level out and we'll see a return of content that appeals to a broader audience without actively excluding anyone. After all, when Star Wars debuted, a huge portion of the population loved it. No doubt there was organic representation in that population that just loved good storytelling without pandering and needless messaging. True inclusion is just that; good storytelling
Classic cinema is classic for a Reason. By rights, "It's a Wonderful Life" shouldn't appeal to ANY modern audience because it's old, mostly white, and, well, too WHITE!! ... And yet it still works its magic. Representation is a piss-poor substitute for quality storytelling.
Actually these kind of people really have benefits if you think about it, For example you can focus on your real life like achieving your goal and not distracted and spent your valuable time for entertainment since they only sell garbage now, and you can save some money, like why you subscribe stream service that sells garbage that's not worthy at all.

I think this video is overblown.
I'm just like "you wanna celebrate diversity and embrace new stuff but just do the same thing we've done over and over and give us leftovers instead of our OWN stories?"??? Hell there aren't much pop culture representing my own ethnicity yet these "diverse" stories don't bother to do something new and fresh with something like showing that ethnicity in more stuff and show otherwise unknown cultures to others

The song literally goes: Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb, Mary had a little lamb who's face was white as snow
Also correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the song sound like it's referring to the lamb having a face as white as snow and not Mary herself, so even if this was related to snow white the line about the color of her face isn't even a reference to her it's a reference to the lamb

If you substitute the word "diversity" for "activists," these policies start to make sense. They write, film, and market these movies & shows for activists.
