I live not too far from yeovilton and Yeovil so see these guys in the air a lot. Yeovil is the only civilian place I’ve lived where nobody pays any attention to military helicopters flying over their heads all day
I see these wonderful beasts flying over ours quite often, they're like the transit van of helicopters. No mistaking their distinctive sound, like the chinooks, just got their own signature
Awesome helicopter and an awesome pilot! Very informative! We need more videos like these of military aircrafts! I have scoured the internet for a good walkaround video of a CH53E and CH53K for so long but still can't find a decent one! Anyway, thank you for sharing this video with us!👌👍
They're not the easiest of aircraft to keep flying are they. An RN mechanic told me that they need far more tlc than any other helicopter he'd worked on, before the Captain of the ship interjected n' told me they were great :)
It is weird how things go full circle. On the Sea King the addition of the British engine made it a better aircraft than its original US version. On the Merlin by all accounts the American GE engines give better performance and require less maintenance than the RR engines.
It’s a P.O.S no use in hot and high conditions, best thing the RAF did was give it to the navy. As an engineer in the RAF it was the most manpower intensive aircraft I worked on.

I sure hope that the rumor I heard isn’t true that you have plans to use this as an aerial weapons platform (gunship)! If so your crew will be on a suicide mission. We, the US, have slowly learned in it’s multiple engagements that rotary wing aircraft HAVE TO BE specialized. A gunship can’t carry ground troops and troop carriers are way to large and slow in reaction time to be efficient Gun Platforms.
Theres a ross kemp video where he gets on a merlin i believe and joins them while they intercept a hijacked ship, if i remember rightly they mention sub capabilities but cant remember off the top off my head im afraid, just signed up to be an aircrewman on the helicopters. Cant wait
A brilliant informative vid that but just not long enough, could have done with another hour at least. Look at a stripped down chopper having its service or inspection. Then there's the pre take off vid you could do then the in flight vid, and so on..... See lot of these helicopters fly low over West Devon several times a week, these are like the transit van of the helicopters now I suppose replacing the Sea King, which incidentally I saw one fly low over us last week and I thought they had all been pensioned off. So come on, do some more vids please.

The Navy are trained to help others in crisis not just to kill people. Also this helo can get our injured boys out of harms way. This is a utilities helo not a fighting machine hence the wince and underslung hook. Its not a damn gunship like the AH-64

Wish I had half his abilities and intelligence! Just thank god we have these people looking after and defending us! God bless you sir!
