Just to be clear - I already knew Michael's general feelings about Legozzz before getting this, and I was not offended or upset by his comments at all. I honestly got it for us to enjoy putting together, which we did and we had a lot of fun. If I added anything to this review, it would be that these type of kits are very enjoyable to build, but then you're stuck with the end result, which is usually only okay looking. I'd say that this is one of the cooler looking final results, and the size makes it very displayable. It is pricey, but remember - you can also display it as the cats!! Finally, i feel like the final sword is kinda weak, and I agree the mini figures would have been a nice addition. Those are my thoughts, for anyone who was curious.
Hey... you had fun together, which is awesome. In nursing school, my wife had to hand out suckers with messages on them (about dental care, if I recall) to kids in some elementary schools. 1000, to be exact. I helped her print, cut out and tape these abominations together... and we had fun. The end result was an enormous pile of crap for which we felt nothing good, but we enjoyed doing it together. If you're able to do that, to hell with what anyone thinks.
Have you done Fantasy All Star evil toy line up? Your video on the first run Voltron not having a size compatible Robeast to fight got me wondering, for example if Inhumanoids stood in. If so, what would be the ultimate evil toy team up that looks like it makes sense.
I bought two sets lol. One to display as Voltron and one as the cats. I really like the goofy/blocky look of the cats and the pop of colors in cat forms. I collect mostly vintage 80s toys but this was must have for me :)
I really enjoy your videos. Yes, they are high end when it comes to production values, but I really enjoy your vocabulary. Useful vocabulary is sadly missing in popular culture. Additionally, your videos are informative. I always learn things about properties I knew little about, like voltron and robotech and about properties I felt well versed in. I will continue to watch until you stop making them!
I'm really glad you've reviewed the latest classic-style Voltron toy! Coincidentally, I just finished building the lions today. The creative uses of parts is outstanding. You know that curved piece on the side of the Green Lion? That's a car windshield. The 1x2 tiles on the Lions' tails are gold ingot pieces. If you end up doing an episode on vintage LEGO Space, I'd recommend using the Brickset database for reference. It's pretty comprehensive, especially for older sets. EDIT: The reason those tools are included is out of the designers' hands. They always come as a set because they're made in the same mould. Any set that uses one of them has to include the rest or else they'd have to redo the tooling, and LEGO Ideas sets never include new moulds.
I'm from Denmark, I grew up with "tons" of Lego, and am not the slightest bit offended by your pronounciation 8-) heck I might say it your way myself, when speaking English. Love your channel. Very inspiring and brings back a lot of childhood memories :)
I knew Lego made a Voltron but I didn't actually seen one personally. I also didn't expect it to be this cool. I pity the kids in this era who never got to play Lego and other similar toys that helps them learn to build things using their imagination and that most of them are so focused on their smartphones and tablets instead.
kirby march barcena what are you talking about? LEGO is still huge with kids now more than ever dude. They even made a movie about it.this generation ain’t all bad.

I can't wait to see your vintage space stuff, as I still have mine from my childhood too. Have a great day today, and a better day tomorrow.
One important thing you didn’t mention. This is not a regular production designed LEGO set. This is a Fan Designed “LEGO Ideas” set. LEGO Ideas is Lego’s crowdsource platform. Fans design and suggest product/project ideas which are voted on by the general public. Projects that get 10,000 votes enter into a product review commission to see if they can be made as a viable product. LEGO Ideas sets are generally short run sets, with typically a few thousand sets made. The Ghostbusters Ecto-1 was a similar Ideas set. The fan designer of this set does incredible work. He has similar versions of Vehicle Voltron, and a few other classic robots. The reason for no minifigs comes from the sets short run Ideas origin. One of Ideas restrictions is “no new parts”. And the pilots helmets didn’t have a decent already existing approximation. The original designer did have a version that seated the pilots. Although I think it was a hair larger. As it is the LEGO Voltron is the largest and most expensive fan designed Ideas set yet made. Nothing in the Voltron set is purpose designed for Voltron. Things like the curved fairings used for the Green Lion are newer pieces than your blocky classic space stuff. But they are mixed role regular LEGO parts. Even the Gold Cross is simply a Minifig tire iron recast in gold. The tools always come together in a little bag as a set. Which is why you have the other tools even though it only needed the one.
Yes and no, you are correct that LEGO ideas are BASED on MOC submissions. However LEGO will re-engineer it before releasing it. I think you hit the nail on the head regarding minifigs. There's a huge chance though that some KO company will make the minifigs sooner or later. Thanx for explaining the golden tool set.
@@GenXToysGeek They reengineer it to meet Lego build and production standards. But it's not the same as a new regular product built from scratch. The Lego designers are trying to as much as possible recreate or preserve the fans design core, just within the limitations for production, budget and intended ages. Having seen many of len_d69's marvelous designs over the years, I think Lego stayed nicely close to them.
Wow you are spoiling us with all this January content. I think this Voltron Lego style looks fantastic with the obvious limitations it's going to inevitably have. I must say that I had to chuckle when I saw the disclaimer at the beginning! Isn't it crazy when you have to even consider things like that, you have my sympathies! Anyway loved the video and as always, much love and support your way my friends.
Lego's classic space stuff has this absolutely timeless look and design that I don't even have the proper words right now to describe. Very Dieter Rams-ish. Their photography for each kit really inspired the imagination and has this very wholesome vibe. There is just so much to say about them, very excited to see your take.
Classic Lego Space is something I've revisited very recently and getting the Galaxy Explorer (set 928) was, probably, the greatest thrill I've had, since I started collecting vintage toys. I had quite a few sets, when I was a kid, but never this. I would always take long looks at it in the catalogues and it was wonderful to finally get it and build it. I've almost completed my '79-'82 collection, which was my main era and I'm looking forward to the upcoming videos.
your intro reminded me of the time I briefly worked at a toy shop that specialized in building toys, LEGO being the main one. the company rep would grill us every time we said "Legos" Great review as always!
Retroblasting doing classic Lego Space, the stuff i so dearly loved as a kid and still do as an adult. This is close to seeing the unaltered OT on the silver screen again. All my sets are nicely arranged on display along with my Lego NASA stuff. Make that a long video, i'm really excited about it
The tools are because they always create the full bag when they do a color - so they just gave us the whole bag. The joints in mine seem to be much much tighter.
The cross on his chest is a wheel cross, right? So you get the whole set of tools. Lego does the same with kitchen utilities...if there's a fork or something in a set (like in the Big Bang Theory set) they throw in a whole bunch of other kitchen stuff like plates etc. in the same color. I think they always produce a whole set in one go even if the model needs only one part. And sorting out the unnecessary parts manually would be too expensive. So it doesn't mean anything, it's just a bonus :-) !
I'll take a quality video, no cussing, no "THAT'S BAD ASS DAWG" or garbage language as most "pop culture" videos are...that's a sign of being lazy. This channel is top notch quality and I appreciate that!
I know i'm late to this video, but from what I heard, most of those little tools were only included because they come on the same sprue that the one cross piece on his chest does. So just included the whole thing. They do that for different pieces in various sets.
Why are some many people on Michael for the resell comment? He literally starts the video by saying you either collect LEGO or something else. He doesn’t say he will sell it but if you follow this channel closely you know Michael and Melinda are always trying to expand the RB collection so maybe one day selling a complete Vultron LEGO set could help the collection or the channel
I clicked on this video as soon as I got it on the notification. Another awesome review as always Retroblasting looking forward to seeing more of the space legos
The reason that there are all of those extra gold tools is because the "cross" on his chest is actually a clever re-use of an existing tire iron tool. All of the little hand tools are molded together so when they molded the tire iron in gold the rest of the tools came along for the ride. Then they all got bagged together because that's how the Lego manufacturing process works. It was more cost effective to toss them all in the kit than to selectively remove and bag the tire iron. Plus if they did that then they'd have a load of incomplete toolkits molded in gold laying around.
The reason you get a full array of tools is entirely because the entire set of mechanic tools is molded together on a combined sprue so in order to have the piece they used for the chest cross, they needed to include the oil can, spanners, screwdriver, etc. I know when I used to get race car sets in the 90s I'd get them all still on the sprue, don't know if that's changed with more recent sets since I normally hyper-focus on Lego Castle and so I don't have a lot of use for automotive mechanics.
Another great video! If I were a Lego collector, I would get this. But I am one of those guys RB is talking about in this video: I can't afford to go down that rabbit hole!
I went down the Lego rabbit hole long time ago much to my wife's chagrine but it all good I don't drink do drugs or go out clubbing so spending money on another collection is all good
As someone who grew up with almost every Voltron toy available in the 80s, for some reason I had this fascination with making my own Voltron out of legos. I’m glad to see that many years later, a real lego Voltron was made. Thank you for this review! Finding this in Japan will be difficult.
Man....that is the most bad ass Lego set ever......I want......$200nis pretty steep though.... When you do the space Lego video, you should also do the megablocks space ripoff, specifically the huge city with the motorized car that runs around it
Nice video and well said. I felt the same way regarding the two key issues with this set. It seemed like a given that the minifigures would have been included, so I was really perplexed when I found out it wasn't going to have them. They really didn't even need to fit inside the Lions, imho. I just wanted to have official Lego minifigure Voltron pilots to go with it. The non-moveable legs in combined form was a disappointment as well. It does look nice in combined form, though.
Your brave my man.. I got this for Christmas from my daughter and it sits sealed. We have a no shoes house rule and well lol its been my experience with Lego is if you drop them no matter how much you look you will always find one late night when your barefoot lol
I don't know if you remember the Space factions, but Voltron V. Blacktron would be friggin' awesome... I'll keep it short, butclassic Space Lego was the only Legos for me. Can't wait! Fair & objective review on Voltron, also. Agree - keep as Voltron.
Well the tools came with the set because the cross on voltron's chest is a piece that only comes together with all those other tools. So their not really seposed to be anything, it's just the way that piece is made.
Pretty sure the tools are included because of the gold cross in the middle. For whatever reason, LEGO includes a full set of tools even when the set only requires one of them.
From what I've seen in build videos, it looks like the gold cross is a tire iron. They probably have a bulk mold of all the tools and were unable to just make the tire iron only. So since they had to make the rest of the tools for the one the needed, you get bonus parts?
Because of the Lego movie. I was hoping that Lego would revisit the old space line. It was my favorite line. Great small and large set. It's a 1980's base line. But it had a 1960 to 70 syfi look and feel.
The reason there's a set of gold tools is because LEGO doesn't produce single tool pieces (with a few exceptions), instead they package them all together in a plastic spur or a baggie.
My wife got me this for Christmas as well and I love it. I've modified mine a bit to beef up the sword and put more smooth tiles on the wings. It really is a well engineered build.
The extra tools image there because they produce them, along with the cross piece, as a set and they didn’t want to have a mass of useless tool parts lying around in the factory
It's good to see an overview of this. I remember a couple of friends of mine seemed excited when this was revealed. That feeling was lost on me because I'm not into Lego(or the Lego look in this specific case) so I'd also rather look at some of the various premium Voltron/Golion non toys. Not that it isn't impressive how they put this set together. The issues you pointed out such as the lion legs would bother me as well. But I'm glad I got to see a Retroblasting review of this. Thanks. Also, I was a few days behind, but the Robotech part one video was quite enjoyable. I love that show. I never got to see it until 1997 and I was instantly hooked.
I never purchased a lego toy until this came out. It was fun to build and I really enjoy it. I probably won't buy anymore lego unless they make more voltron. I also have the mini pla model kit and had fun with that too. It's more of a toy with great articulation.
This looks great. If you have an interest, there is a website called Brick Forces that specializes in custom Lego compatible mini figs. They have a Voltron minifig, and they sell figs of the pilots.
Danish person here: We always use the mass noun version; Lego. But we're also aware of the tendency of other nations to make it a singular noun; Legos, and we're absolutely fine with that. The Danish word for toys, 'legetøj', is itself a mass noun, like money, water, furniture etc, so maybe that's why. We do the same with GI Joe, He-Man, Barbie etc, which obviously aren't Danish, so who are we to judge? Each to their own.
The gold piece to make the cross on his chest is a LEGO tool piece and all the other tools come with it in its own little accessory bag. So normally when LEGO sets like a car garage for example comes with tools you get a bag with a full set tools in it for the figures. But the voltron set only needed one of the tools to make the cross so the rest end up being extra. You can’t get one tool without the rest if that makes sense. So that’s why you get all the extra tools. The Big Ben clock set used a few wrench 🔧 pieces for the clock hands so it also comes with a bunch of extra tools too. I hope I explained that okay
As far as trying to engineer a working Voltron with the individual lions that can combine into Voltron, then LEGO succeeded. My only real complaint is why the Hell didn’t they include mini LEGO figures that look like the pilots of Voltron? Michael brought up a very good point when he said that LEGO are know for having mini-figs you can place in or around your LEGO set. It’s definitely fail on Legos part.
Cool review! You really narrowed down who it’s really for, I think. I have the Toynami MP, Panosh Place, the Playmates Classic and was considering this one but the price was my drawback. It doesn’t seem to go down in price. Thanks for the heads up on this.
Thanks for another awesome video! I'm very much looking forward to that Space Lego review. It's hard for me to believe that licensed IP Lego sets are the norm now. It'll be interesting to revisit a time when the set was just the set and the children filled in the blanks. I feel a little sad that I missed out on all the Star Wars and TMNT Lego, I must say, but not very. Best.
I made the mistake of picking up this set now I am hooked on picking up some Classic Space Lego sets from my childhood. I found this figure more satisfying than the SOC because of the coolness of building it. As a matter of fact, when I get home today I will have the pieces I need to finish the Lego Galaxy Explorer, set 928 (or 497 depending on where you are).
@@RandomAmerican3000 Really cause the creator confirmed on twitter that it was made of pieces that was used on older sets. Not that I don't believe but that's what he said.
@@retroblasting How about instead of getting shitty with me, go back and watch the video you posted and see if you can spot all the things about your intro, your delivery and your demeanor that inspired my comment in the first place.
Although I had many Lego classic space series as a kid the only sets, in fact the only toys, that survived my childhood are my Lego Space Police 1 sets. I'll be looking forward to those videos in the future!
I do agree with this that this set is not for every one. I guess i fall into that odd category that can collect a small selection of lego and continue my other collecting passions I don't have to have every set I see if I see an affordable set i'll pick it up. As far as mini figures it might have bumped the price up slightly but they also could have used the mini mini figs (statues) that they have used in the past with bigger sets to have a bit of extra play value. The ones that got up set when you said "IF I ever part with it" key word is IF people he didn't say "I will part with it" I think we have all said that as collectors that's why we still keep things in the boxes or try to protect the packaging materials just in case we want or need to sell something from wanting to pass it along to a new collector or something happens and you know that item being sold will help out. once again good video and review continue the good work! P.S. let 2019 be the year Vader gets his arms back lol
I’m impressed by the overall look of this piece, even though I’m not really interested in Lego. Also, I was wondering, is your shirt depicting the DeLorean time machine as a Transformer? If so, that’s pretty cool. Gotta eventually track down a TARDIS one!
Great as always, I have this set since it was announced, for me is a standard figure, I'm with you in the mini figure missing, and the extra parts came in because of the chest piece that come in all together
Great review, I’ve been tossing around getting this but ultimately I’ll just buy a few castles or pirates sets from my youth to satiate my LEGO need and pass on this. Thanks Michael!
It'll be interesting how well Lego/Legozz' version of Voltron will fare overall in terms of popularity and, of course, sales. While I do not particularly care for the GoLion version (Vehicle Voltron was my fave), its rather good. Like the level of detail, though, in both the toy itself and the video proper. Perhaps if it sells well, Lego will branch out to get license from other mecha properties like Great Mazinger, Combattler V, Voltus V, maybe even Transformers like Optimus Prime or Omega Supreme. Wonder if a Castle of Lions set will come next?
I got this for christmas from my family and was not disappointed. It kind of stinks that you have to partially take black lion apart to change it from lion to torso. Also the massive amount of spare parts was a little frightening.
Just to be clear - I already knew Michael's general feelings about Legozzz before getting this, and I was not offended or upset by his comments at all. I honestly got it for us to enjoy putting together, which we did and we had a lot of fun.
I've always wondered myself if its Lego or Legos....is it plural? AHHH I DON"T KNOW!!!! Anyway Love you channel Michael, keep up the great work.
The golden tools all come in a separate bag along with the cross used on the chest. They had to be included.
You're going to showcase classic space LEGO sets soon? WOOHOO! Music to my ears. Can't wait!
FYI the cross isn't actually across it's a tool that's why the other tools are included in this set
It looks good and I love legos grew up with them, great building toys, but at that price I'd rather get the SOC version. Great review!
“There are two drawbacks....”
if I critiques my wife’s presents this much, I’d never receive any more presents. 😉
Keep up the good work.
We both know she bought it for two purposed - Lego cats and video review. She's good with it.
I really don't get why Legos isn't recognized as the proper plural. It sounds a lot more natural.
I clicked "like" as soon as I saw the disclaimer in the beginning :)
LMFAO....Yoda is the Yellow Lion pilot
I had no idea this set existed. Thanks for making this video!
If my wife gifted me that and I told her, "I didn't ask for this," I would be wearing that around my head, box n' all.
Just out of curiosity would you be willing to review super Minipla Voltron?
Cool review! You really narrowed down who it’s really for, I think. I have the Toynami MP, Panosh Place, the Playmates Classic and was considering this one but the price was my drawback. It doesn’t seem to go down in price. Thanks for the heads up on this.
Another great review! Can’t wait until the next video!
9:21 I'd love to think that when voltron goes of to fight whatever monster or robot hes slipping on his shoes before going out
Thanks for another awesome video!
Actually the creator said this, but every piece was from a previous lego set, no custom pieces or cheat bricks to make this guy.
Also this was not made by lego themselves but lego ideas which is fan submitted content that could be turned into lego's set.
@@RandomAmerican3000 Really cause the creator confirmed on twitter that it was made of pieces that was used on older sets. Not that I don't believe but that's what he said.
@@RandomAmerican3000 those pieces were not new for this set.
@@RandomAmerican3000 nexo knights mostly.
You can reverse the legs on the lions to make them more anatomically correct for cats. You get more pose-ability that way
That's my biggest gripe about this set, no minifigs.
For future reference - when someone surprises you with a gift you didn't ask for, the correct response is "thank you!".
Sigh..... Melinda is the co-creator of this channel. She bought this for us to review. Geeze...
I am aware of that, but ya really made this one sound like an unwelcome addition to the collection and a real chore to review.
Why don't we let Melinda decide if she wants to chide me over this? She's an adult and can certainly stand up to me if she feels necessary.
Have you considered.......shutting your pretentious mouth? It might help.

How about instead of getting shitty with me, go back and watch the video you posted and see if you can spot all the things about your intro, your delivery and your demeanor that inspired my comment in the first place.
Any bets if Voltron makes an appearance in Lego Movie 2? (Never understood how this qualified for the "Ideas" line)
I have one of these and I love it! I agree totally though that they REALLY missed when they didn't include mini figures.
Another great video
Wow! I have never seen this. This looks glorious!
I’m impressed by the overall look of this piece, even though I’m not really interested in Lego. Also, I was wondering, is your shirt depicting the DeLorean time machine as a Transformer? If so, that’s pretty cool. Gotta eventually track down a TARDIS one!
Yes. DeLorean transformer
Great as always, I have this set since it was announced, for me is a standard figure, I'm with you in the mini figure missing, and the extra parts came in because of the chest piece that come in all together
I remember asking if you were going to get this in one of the live streams! Glad you got it!
what happened to the live streams haven't seen any for a long time
Good video keep up the great work and love you’re videos
Did you have or Remember Ideal Toys Manglors?
This set just makes me sad that there will probably never be a Lego Voltron game.
Well, heck. The original die cast Voltron did not have mini figs. Its an issue. However I don't see it as that big of a deal.
RetroBlasting I am Begging you, please Have Some Marvel Ones Because I Loved Your Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends Please Retroblasting Please
I kinda want to get it for my nephew and watch my brother's head explode.
This was a fan design under the ideas line, they won't be branching out. I'm sure there are some fan designs on Flickr, though.
Great job on the reviews of all the toys
Any plans the get the super minipla lion voltron since as you said in the video you review all the main line releases?
I got this for christmas from my family and was not disappointed. It kind of stinks that you have to partially take black lion apart to change it from lion to torso. Also the massive amount of spare parts was a little frightening.
+once you build it then what do you do with it?
This would be the perfect set for Will Ferrell's character in The Lego Movie. Bring on the Kragle!
