The 10,000-20,000 hours concept is frightening to many beginners because they mistakenly believe it means that they'll be BAD at the task for years. In reality, you can become DECENT at a task in a very short amount of time, you can become GOOD in a reasonable amount of time, but MASTERY takes a very long time to achieve. This is an important clarification because many people just want to become decent or good at something, but hear the 10,000 hour rule and decide that it's too much, so they never start. (inspired by Tim Ferris, The 4-Hour Chef)
It's only scary if you are not prepared to put in the work. it's about conviction. "I am determined to do it" "this is all i think about" "I cant see myself doing anything else"
Chris Loper this is misleading... you have to make a lots of repetitions BUT they have to be with the perfect form until you get them into your muscle memory and they become second nature, if you build your learning on thismprinciple you will get there probably faster or at least if you need 10,000 hours those hours will be better spent... I say this because a beginer might focus on puting hours while not using proper form and the result would be a lot of wasted time

+Brian Johnson But at some point you're gonna reach the everest, then what? ;) btw I just completed 'Selected Writings of Emerson' today. Took me more than two months to read more than usual for after every essay and journal I needed to take a break before I could move to the next topic which were alot to take in emotionally. What was really astnounishing for me thoigh was how many of the topics in the book were still relevant to this day and age and could really give a boost to anyone who want's to learn more about them. Also I it was very easy for me to relate to his passion and deep profoundness to nature for I'm studying Landscape architecture :)
+Mishel Fayad Happiness and Mastery are two related but separate things. And no one can deliberately practice for 10 hours per day. Work, sure. But those aren't the hours we're talking about in this context! Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me
@114941293474565261543 Well, 10 hours a day of deliberate practice *any* day is nearly impossible and absolutely impossible ever day! It's incredibly taxing to be THAT focused at your edge and you need recovery. It takes 10 years to put in the 10,000 hours of true practice with rare exceptions at the 9ish year mark! I still download music and won't pay 10 bucks a month for streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify, due to my passion for music and learning but a low income. 10.000 is about 3 years (for 10h per day). I know many people who have worked for that and much longer and still are unhappy!

Hehe you got a point there on deliberate practice! I guess it depends on the person's determination and vision!

Thank you! I always wondered how many years one need to reach mastery. 10 years sounds reasonable to me! I better start getting serious about it! :)
