  • The trade friction between Japan and the US during the 1980s was massive. With Plaza Accord and US-Japan Semiconductor Agreement taking effect, the Japanese chip industry eventually lost its competitive edge. However, the two countries have decided to put past grudges aside, with IBM and Japanese chip manufacturer Rapidus forming a strategic partnership. What brought forth such change?

Japan has proved to be reliable in promoting the western rules-based order.
It is also democratic and promotes freedom. Japan is a natural ally of America.

The US is cooperating with Japan now. What prevents the US from giving Japan an elbow in the throat if Japan's semiconductor industry is getting big again?

That could of course happen however it might want to avoid Chinese reliance, securing good relations. The issue however is the flip-flopping of the it's government, but currently tariffs are focused on China not Japan, and friendshoreing seems to be the current strategy.
