- Life in Laos - The life of a bicycle world traveler stranded in Laos & everyday life in Laos
The new rail link from China (Kunming) to Vientiane, Laos was officially inaugurated on December 3rd 2021. It’s the first fast train in Laos’s history - called "Lane Xang Train", named after the former Lane Xang (Million Elephants) Kingdom. The railway section in Laos runs from Boten via Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng to the capital Vientiane.
The day after the opening, I wanted to take the opportunity to go on a weekend trip to Vang Vieng with my buddy Jaypee. So we packed our bags, loaded them on our bicycles, cycled the dusty road to Luang Prabang train station and started our journey.
Well, unfortunately our travel plan didn't work out the way as we wanted ...

What a great adventure by cycling in Asia! I’ll be following your journey, please keep all of us update. Have a safe trip.
Thank you Vince! I'm not only cycling in Asia. I want to cycle all around the world. I started in Germany 2.5 years ago. Take care! ✌

Thank you so much for review Laos
You're very welcome! ✌
The ticket seller gave you a wrong answer. According to the China Railway policies, you can either use a railway consignment service or fold/dismantle and box your bike as carry-on luggage onboard, there’s also size-weight requirement.
Yes she did give me the wrong information but I'm glad that the service staff solved the situation and made sure that I was taken care of.
Danke fürs Mitnehmen
Sehr gerne! ✌
Thanks for sharing. I've never visited Laos and not sure when I can have a trip there. I saw other vlog shows the schedule in 3 languages (English, Lao and Chinese) maybe you passed that in a hurry.
It's a pity that you didn't take the train in daytime, the scenary along the railway is brilliant.
I bet the scenery is brilliant! I'll for sure travel during the daytime on my next trip.
Good journey! Thanks for sharing - danke.
Thanks for watching Nick! ✌
China has good heart ❤️ they make developing countries youths educated for free for future innovation project+ give real life pratical for example High speed railways ,roads , school's, institution, hospital, financial industry etc etc
Congratulations on this... Enjoy
Thank you! And thanks for joining me on this trip! Next time up north? ✌
I am glad to see you traveling again and I hope life is going great for you..it's Seem like everyone is excited about the train ride, and hopefully life will be easier for the people. 🙏

@@ChrisFritze Chris.. Than you . 🙏
Very nice
Hi Chris! I think you can absolutely get off at Vang Vieng station if the ticket goes through there.
Hi Timothy! Yes, usually you can. But on that day we were told by the train service staff that nobody was allowed to get off due to a Covid situation in Vang Vieng. That's why we got the replacement ticket to Vientiane instead.
This was very interesting. Your perplexed look has been matched by coverage from others. No online booking and information, lack of restrooms at the stations outside before you can get in. Hotwater dispensed *only* at stations and on board the train. Virtually no staff on board, etcetera. Seems it needs time to settle down.
It surely needs some time to settle down. I'm quite sure everything will be improved soon.
Thanks for sharing,i come fron China.
Thanks for watching! ✌
The Chinese engineers built exactly all the same electrified railway system in Laos. But it's much more difficult than the project in China. Because there are so many mountains and rivers in Laos, and they have to dig tunnels and build bridges.
Yes, I can only imagine what kind of challenging project it was to make this happen.
And it took Chinese experts about 5 months to clear up the unexploded bombs that dropped by Americans during Vietnam War along the route.
@@ChrisFritze Hallo, this railway uses the lowest standard of Chinese railway system(160km/h single line electrify railway). So it's rather a simple project for China.
@Leo Miroslav
there are several million of un-explode mines and bombs left by US during WWII, which increase the difficulty

You're welcome Kenny! Thank you for your kind comment and your support! I really appreciate it! ✌
In China ,there is a rule for the luggage when u take a train(similar as airplane),which is “weight< 20KG,lenth+width+height< 160cm”,(unless u take a wheelchair for disabled people)。I think the LAO station follow the similar rule now
Maybe! In my case they were just unable to communicate it and there are no information in any other language than Lao and Chinese provided yet.
Hello, are you from Germany? Have a great trip
Hi Terry! Thanks! Yes, I'm from Germany.
looks like not fully ready yet. probably would take 1/2 or 1 year before smooth operation.
No, not fully ready yet but I'm quite sure we'll see improvements soon.

@@perileSo well said ! The hypocrisy and prejudice in this comment sounds so familiar, exactly the same tune as the mainstream media here in Europe.

Looks much clean and better than the Bahnhof München in Germany.
DB = Delayed Bahn
Seriously, Germany was ahead in train tech last century, they should catch up in the 21st century.
I couldn't agree more. I think it's probably because the German politics didn't manage to implement new train technology in the past and then sold it to China 20 years ago.
@@ChrisFritzeSadly, politics took priority over many things here in Europe. The maglev train operated in Shanghai since 2003 was also German technologies, but even in Germany until now, there is NO maglev train under operation. And China developed even more maglev lines (Beijing, Changsha, Zhuzhou) domestically.
I took a night train from Lucerne to Berlin a few years back and to my horror, the sleeping cabin has three tiers packing six persons to a cabin. I just wonder how the big size european can sleep properly in such a tight space.

Thank you! 🙏 Welcome to my channel! ✌
I wonder if bicycle was packed in box and flat tire ,will it be possible to bring along on the train?
Yes, it is. If it's in a box or bicycle transportation bag, then you can take it on train.
The train used in Laos is the same as the high speed train in China, which is similar to the ICE in Germany. But one of the differences is no one has the need to carry bicycles on board therefore no specialized carriage for them, only passengers with normal luggage. For those who want to ride bicycles in combination with train it's very easy to get these ride sharing bikes, they are everywhere in China. But for Laos buses/subways as connection to the city is better.
It's not high-speed train
Well, we had the need to carry our bicycles and I'm quite sure there'll be more people in the future with the same need. I don't think that you've to be specialized to carry them. I think a bicycle is also just luggage like any other item. And in fact, now I found out that you can take a bicycle on the train if you put it in a box or bicycle transportation bag. Like on an airplane. Unfortunately there are no shared bicycle stations in Laos.
@@derekwampum8861 Why not? The CRH in China runs at a top speed of 350km/h. It takes the fastest option about 4.5 hours to go from Beijing to Shanghai (1300km), which means the real world speed is about 290KM/h.
The ICE in Germany runs at top speed of 300km/h. It takes the fastest option about 4.5 hours to go from Berlin to Munich (580km), which means the real world speed is about 130KM/h.
The train in Laos the same as CRH train in China. But it is running on tracks designed with top speed of 160KM/H, which makes sense for Laos as the first step.
@@ChrisFritze Do you mean a bag like the Thule carrying case? It costs several hundred euros and do you think it makes sense for normal people in Laos? Plus, I have used this bag before and I can think of at least two practical problems: 1. its designed for sport bikes with quick release wheels as you have to take off the front wheel to fix into the bag. Do Lao people ride fancy sport bikes with quick release? Any bigger attachment such as a basket will also not work. 2. Once you arrive at destination. Take the bike out of the bag ready to start riding, where do you put the big bulky bag?
@@JC-kl1sw CR2000J only runs top speed of 160 km/h
Hast ja wieder einen tollen Trip hinter dir.

It is a very busy railway station
It really is!
I have never seen bicycle on any passenger train in China. The ticket sale staff probable did not know the regulations, it is all new to them. May be some of the older slow train has special compartment for bicycles.
Apparentely she didn't. But I'm glad that the service staff was able to solve the situation.
So, how far away is the “Freedom bridge” from the station?
Do you know if Thai trains come to the station in Vientiane so passengers not have to use taxi and shit to get to the other side?
The Friendship Bridge is about 25 kilometers away from the train station. There are no Thai trains coming to the new train station yet. It's not linked to the Thai train network yet but according to the news that will be the next step.
Video good
Thank you! 🙏
I have heard many things about bikes on this train, some have said you can take a bike if it's in a bike box but no other way, but I'm not there so I couldn't say. I do hope to come to Laos next year and hopefully bring a bike.
Hi! Yes you can bring your bicycle on the train if it's in a box or in a bicycle carriage bag.

Good
As a Chinese, when I know you bought a ticket for your bicycle, I just wonder how could you past through the security check, and I am happy for you getting the compensation and upgrading lol.
Actually, you can also get off at Vang Vieng, if the Vang Vieng station is a middle station between the origin station and destination station of your ticket.
Enjoy the trip and welcome to China after the COVID-19.
Hi Shen! Yes, usually you can get off the train in Vang Vieng. Only that day we were told by the service staff that it wasn't allowed due to a Covid situation in Vang Vieng. I'm also happy that everything worked out well in the end.
May I ask, is there a direct train from Beijing to Vientiane?
I’ll arrive to Beijing with Trans Mongolian Railway.
@@chukwow5738 Currently, due to COVID-19, there is no direct passenger train from Beijing to Vientiane, and only the freight trains between the two countries are in operation.
So, if you want to travel from Beijing to Vientiane by train, you need to take the high-speed train or ordinary train from Beijing to Kumming, and then take the high-speed train from Kunming Station to Mohan Station, Mohan Station is the China border station of the China-Laos Railway. Then go through customs in Mohan to Laos. Before you decide to go on this way of travel, you may need to confirm that the border between China and Laos is open。
Maybe after the end of COVID-19, there will be cross-border passenger trains.
@@shenzou4778 Thank you so much for your reply.
Yeah, the C-19 situation is really a pain in the but. My plan is to go by train from Sweden to Thailand. The original route was thru Cambodia, but now I found out about this and I’m very thrilled:)
