Why no mention of Fraternal Societies? Institutions founded, and run by workers themselves that were non-profit. These weren't charities, yet they provided welfare, healthcare, insurance, and were far cheaper than the alternatives. David T Beito has done writing on the subject and has been interviewed on the subject as well.

One of the big debates in economics today has to do with what role the government should play in providing welfare to citizens. It's a tricky balance and many arguments exist for more or less government intervention.

"The Welfare State is the oldest con game in the world. First, you take people's money away quietly, and then you give SOME OF IT back to them, flamboyantly." - Thomas Sowell (American economist, b.1930)

Your taxes would be based on your income because we have a 21st accounting technology known as "Computers" so this doesn't really apply...

It's not a con unless the money taken is benefitting politicians and or billionaires. If it genuinely benefits the less fortunate or everyone equally, it's a very good thing.

Anyone who says that is dumb as bread mold.
They’d rather save a few thousand dollars than pay for children education, their own healthcare, the military, veteran’s healthcare, police, road maintenance.

@@TheSilentWalkerz Its is theft if the peoples money isn’t used for their benefit to begin with. You really can’t trust any government with your money so there needs to be checks and balances in place.
