- [Electronic/Synth Pop/Pop/Pop Rock] Here is a special video for all the fans of the original 1984 "Ghostbusters" film. These are my personal extended film versions of the song "Magic" aka "I Believe It's Magic" by Mick Smiley. This video contains two versions: 1) "Magic (Extended Film Version)" and 2) "Magic (Apartment Version)" where i changed the ending and inserted the Elmer Bernstein verse from the movie. The song was prominently featured in the scene where all the contained ghosts break free after Walter Peck and his cronies shut down the storage facility. Years ago when i first saw this movie, i loved this scene as it just fit with the visuals that director Ivan Reitman incorporated. It wasn't long before i purchased the CD of the "Ghostbusters (Original Soundtrack Album)" that i couldn't wait to hear this song again. First of all, when I first heard it on the album, I thought there must have been a mistake. I hit play and a down tempo power ballad cued up, filled with "In The Air Tonight" Phil Collins-esque beats and lyrics like: "Strangers meet, strangers dream ...some call it love, I call it magic." And then all of a sudden with no buildup whatsoever, it made a hard left turn into the chilling composition that all Ghostbusters fans know. Personally i have never seen any song do that and quite frankly i was disappointed as the second verse is clearly the superior part of the song. For years i (and presuming many fans) wanted to understand why it was so "different" from what you hear in the movie but unfortunately Mick disappeared from public whereabouts after this song was recorded. In 2016, he was finally found by a man named Abraham Riesman and he did an amazing interview with Smiley. Ill give a brief overview of the interview: "Smiley," as expected, is his middle name which was chosen long ago as his stage moniker in place of his surname, Cipolla. In his 30's, he had his own band and they would perform in various places around the LA area. Because of these efforts he eventually befriended star producer/songwriter Keith Forsey. To make a long story short he ended up recording demo tracks with Forsey (one of which was this song) and somehow it ended up on Ivan Reitman 's desk to be used in Ghostbusters. After Smiley did a small music video for the song (parts of which can be found online) he learned that he'd appear on the ghostbusters soundtrack, though he got no synopsis of the film or description of where his track would fit in. He only got to see the synthesis of footage and tune when he sat at a pre release screening for the cast and crew. He states that he was puzzled because it felt like it was purposely scored for the film and his suspicion is also matched with mine. The film version is definitely heavily edited with small ambient synth cues conducted by Elmer Bernstein perking up in every scene where we get a glimpse of Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett / Zuul). Further more, Smiley went on to write: "Kiss Me Deadly," which Lita Ford took to no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988 and then he vanished until 2016. Today, he has his own successful DJ company titled "Better Music Services" and considers the second verse of "Magic" his favorite. One of his wishes is to have a full length version of the second verse of the song that was featured in the movie ...this is where Anthony's Channel comes in, lol this is for you Mick (and to all Ghostbusters fans). This OST song was released under Arista Records '84.

Hey guys! Just an FYI that the purpose of this video was to extend the second verse of "Magic" found on the "Ghostbusters" 1984 original soundtrack to a full 3-4 min version (something that Mick actually wished for in his interview). I will definitely try my best to give you guys the "Magic" Elmer Bernstein version from the film though its nearly impossible to extract / remove all SFX's. When I get my hands on it i will gladly post it but overall the purpose of this video was to give you guys a full radio edit of the second verse of the song. The apartment version is just a fun separate extension i wanted to include for the visuals, lol.

It’s also weird to see how sweet half of the actual song is. There’s this almost eerily sweet half and then there’s the other half, which played in this scene of Ghostbusters. There’s this weird emotional power and then it cuts halfway through the song to this section.

I'm a Xennial (born in 82) - and I'm going through this phase where I'm revisiting music from the 80's and being completely blown away. The synth vibes from that era are totally my style and I can't get enough.

Hey everyone! Man, I get a viseral reaction when this part of the movie comes, and the song plays. It always felt scary, in an unpredictable way. It was also SUPER sexy. I really don't think any other song would have matched the emotions we all get with this song. It's absolutely perfect, and this movie is more culturally impacting than 83' congress. I've seen Ghostbusters probably over 100 times, and I still get excited at the very beginning when it shows that statue, and that dramatic music outside Dana Barrets apartment.
Giant flames come out of the twin towers as the ghosts spew forth... right at the start of this sensual song. I thought it was Bowie for a long time. The orginal song and video resemble this very little.
You nailed the feeling... scary, unpredictable and sexy. I came here to revisit this song for the exact same reason; it always gave me goosebumps!!

The "magic" was this dark synth track and the fact they had the team fresh off poltergeist doing the effects. It was a dark horror comedy. This combo packed the uniqueness that left an indelible mark on culture. It's what made it a classic. So listen up hollywood. Stick to the formula. Don't tone it back, ramp it up.

The thing with music that makes me adore it so much more. Is understanding what it takes to make certain songs/sounds. If you ever get to see the featurette of the dark knight. Watch it. The sound of the joker like when he created chaos is literally the sound of the thing going across the top of the violin. Where they strum it. That's literally the sound it is. Idk how Christopher Nolan even thought of that. But it's beautiful.

I remember this song from the movie when I was a kid, I'm glad someone else remembered it also. I remember I didn't like Sigourney Weaver, didn't think she was hot in the movie. Now I'm 43 and looking back I have to say "WoW was I wrong".

Remember Mick Smiley in an interview I once read saying that when he saw a preview of the film, he felt that the use of it was very inspired as it made him feel he had written the song especially for what was happening on screen. He wasn't half wrong - a great atmospheric song that was heard by the director and used in an ingenious way.

This track reminds me a lot of ‘ Suicide’s ‘ second album. I remember watching G.B at cinema on release , and this was the stand out score track for me. I was mesmerised.

I wonder if Mick Smiley had any idea when he wrote it that his "love ballad" type song would be used in the explosion scene in a sci-fi film (and help to make that scene even more awesome/scary)? I also wonder, is the apartment building actually based on a real building or totally fictional? That edgy, gothic art deco style was very popular in buildings of the 1920s and 30s.
There are some great videos on here about the half fictional building (floors were added, architecture was changed) and I think they said obsessed fans still pay tons to live at the actual address

I swear I saw the base of the building last time I was in New York. It was kind of an obsession that day through Central Park exactly what building to search the skyline for.
As to the apartment, the building is real, but eight floors and the gozerian temple were added via matte painting.

I never understood the concept of the original song by Mick Smiley. It is as if it is completely bipolar and Mick is going through an identity crisis. First half of the original song is very typical of the era, but the second half is genius, was way ahead of it's time, and should have been a song all in itself. Heck, an entire album should have been based around the feel of the second half of Magic!

I always felt the first part of the song was an incongruous addition cooked up for the soundtrack. It's almost like they're two different songs - to me this part is the gem, and the other bit is disposable. But I know some people like both.

Wish Mick would've made the entire song sound like the ending as the first half of the song sucked and sounds nothing like this part. Had he done so he would've had a decent summer hit on his hands as it has Miami Vice tones to it.
