I'm not sure, I think it's a procedure which helps to ensure constancy and quality, I've seen similar behavior in Japan. I would suspect it helps prevent these types of accidents from happening shanghaiist.com/2014/11/07/woman-crushed-to-death-after-getting-trapped-between-doors-beijing-metro.php

Brian Lockwood It still seems kind of strange to me. Here in S'pore where i live, the doors will auto-detect if there's some big items between them and it will open again for a while before they slam shut again. It won't move if it detects something between the doors. Also the metro lines are driverless, with exception of one line I think. Even when I was in Shanghai, Chengdu and some other small cities, I don't see the driver coming out to make such checks. I don't there's any chance of a person trapped between the train doors and the platform doors as the gap here just wouldn't allow that. Not sure how it could actually happen in Shanghai. Anyway in China, even without such malfunctions, many needless deaths can still occur because drivers and sometimes pedestrians are reckless and run against traffic rules. Buses can burst into flames too and toddlers can drop from the windows. Need I say more.

I only noticed the driver coming out with the stations above ground, I think that is because the wall separating the train from the platform provides partial protection. I'll ask David Feng twitter.com/DavidFeng see if he knows the true answer, he knows the China train systems really well

Just like anything else, e.g. your computer, car etc.. it will fail over time or other technical problems, you'll never know, it is always nice to step out just to make sure everything is OK, nothing wrong with that, i will say it is a quality service.

The driver came out to confirm whether there were passengers on board or off the train , all for safety
