Such a powerful scene at the very end. The music and the singing of course are phenominal, but then the staging and acting went so far above and beyond. The spot light in the shape of the cross shining on her depicting divine mercy allowing her to spend eternity in Heaven with her son instead of being condemned. I cry every single time. Puccini was not messing around with bringing out his audience's emotions. Bravo!
I saw this in HD on the big screen at the theater when it was performed. I was so impressed with Barbara Fritolli. She has the singing chops and is also a great actress. Fritolli could make an atheist cry.
She is without a doubt one of the best Angelicas ever to grace the stage. Her voice has just the right size, her top is free and open and she remains singing instead of screaming even in the most dramatic moments. And she is a terrific actress on top of that. Wish I had been there! Brava Barbara!
Ok, I know I love this. I think it is just amazing. The way she moves around the set, the way she commits everything she has, and the great singing!! I also believe this clip will be one that people look back on as a classic moment in opera!!
How great to see that she must have had a director who understood that each and every action is to be found in the music. And how fantastic is she? Really didn't expect to see something of such a high level of artistry in this day and age. Bravissima Barbara!
It was the finest performance of "Suor Angelica" I ever saw, and made me realize what a masterpiece the work is. She sounded wonderful in the opera house, from the orchestra
This year, in December, I will be seeing Patricia Racette, a wonderful artist, also doing the part, and all the main soprano roles in "Trittico." It will be interesting to see if she will be comparable to Frittoli
From 'prince gualtiero' to the final scene, this work is a masterpiece, listen it to believe ....Bravo Levine, Bravissima Frittoli e Blythe And of course Puccini...Incredible
Yes. Angelica is the best (a music that is so beautiful that frightens) The Tabarro is very beautiful and especially musically modern Gianni Schicchi is a fun rhythmic experiment. However all three are beautiful but Angelica is the most beautiful
I read Sills autobiography many years ago and remember her stating that she sang Angelica for one performance only because the role broke her heart. I do know that Sills had a disabled daughter but I do not know if she suffered the loss of a child.
I have a recording (audio) of Sills doing her one and only performance of this role. The emotion is almost unbearable due to her personal circumstances at the time. I think Frittoli is wonderful!
Does anyone know where I would be able to find the full length film of this production? Ive tried searching but the only ones I have found for sale were her 2008 la scala rendition
The Met refuses to release it or add it to their On Demand library - it was even telecast on PBS in 2007. I don't know why. There was also a telecast of Diana Soviero back in the early 1990s. No record of it now. Very strange.
There is no DVD of this performance, but it might be on Met Opera on Demand. The DVD I have of this has Renata Scotto in this role. She is equally riveting.
I am searching for this performance as well. No DVD/Blu-Ray seems to exist and I checked, the performance is not available on the Met on Demand platform (it’s one of the very few Met HD production to be missing). Sad...
@@opera_orange Back in the day a friend of mine worked at the Met and the official rumor was that one of the cast members didn't like how s/he looked on screen and then stopped the release of a DVD,. Since the scandals of two years ago this version won't be released. I was hoping that the most recent cast would get to do the Live in HD, since this was the centennial of this work's debut, but that didn't happen. Christine Oppolais was equally good in this role and Stephanie Blythe also appeared as La Principessa.
This piece just simply breaks my heart. God bless Puccini for all the times he has made me cry.

@@TheContessa52 This was the best Trittico imaginable. Why is not available as a DVD?
Levine , Frottoli, Puccini a great trio for one of the most inspirational music !

Barbara always sings perfectly. I've liistened and seen her as Liù and Desdemona. She's great both in Verdi and in Puccini. Brava!!!!
I saw this performance live in New York,
and it was incredible

This piece, this rendition is so touching. Brava Frittoli, you have read my mind.
Fritolli is absolutely superb! I could watch/listen to this performance all day long. Probably will. Beautiful death scene.

Saw this live in HD at the time of performance. At curtain call Barbara Frittoli was still collapsed on stage. Simply best ever seen!
Grazie Giacomo Puccini! GRAZIE
God, this is terrific! I've tear in my eyes! What a glorious scene! Thanks to share with us!
Omg! She’s amazing
This is beautiful!!!This Opera isn't so famous, but this is so touching! One of my favorites of Puccini!
So great, precise, fulfilling, spiritual and moving. Wonderful. a moment..
Should the day ever come when I am not left in tears as this heartrending finally comes to a close I'll know I've lived too long.
Her acting after she drinks is simply astonishing
absolutely stunning performance
Everytime I watch this I cry like a baby!
Her voice is amazing enough...but I am equally as mesmerized at her silent acting as she finds and considers the poison flower.
Can’t wait to see this three masterpieces at Salzburg festival next week 😃
Maravillosa
Puccini eterno y único !!!! Estremece el alma
It's back this year at the MET - Finally!!!
A perfect reading. Brava!

That had to be the best, most dramatic death scene ever. YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!! She did that!
I read Sills autobiography many years ago and remember her stating that she sang Angelica for one performance only because the role broke her heart. I do know that Sills had a disabled daughter but I do not know if she suffered the loss of a child.
Her son; Bucky is severely mentally challenged and had just been institutionalized when Sills did the recording..
Meraviglioso!

At 7:15 the choir is not women only but is mixed, no longer just the Sisters but the heavenly choir also. Puccini is the master.
