Oh God. I've never heard a soprano in such emotional pain doing the little scream when her son appear. Heartbreaking. I also love Barbara Frittoli in this from the beautiful Met production, also on here.
She is amazing, singer and actress.

Holy cow, she’s a Queen. What a brilliant actor. What a voice. I’m going to hear her sing Turandot with Jonas in December, and I’m counting down the seconds.
What did you think of Turnadot? I saw in 19th and was blown away. I am now huge Asmik fan girl. And unpopular opinion, but the staging worked for me.
@@Culture_maven AMAZING!!! It knocked my socks off. I saw it the 22nd and pretty much bawled from the second act through to the end. Asmik is unparalleled right now - she in such good form. Ever since I saw her sing the hell out of Suor Angelica in Salzburg, I've been a stan. Jonas was dreamy, too. I expected to hate the staging, but it totally worked for me as well - like they created it's own universe in which to set the action, and I surprisingly loved the overall production in addition to loving the glorious singing and orchestra. (Bummed that Asmik doesn't stage door, but that's her prerogative. Jonas was delightful to the fans at the door.)
@Porn05Mouth I didn't know he stage doored. 😫😫😫😫 Jealous! I'm in US and was looking at her calendar and she Met debuts for 4 performances of Madama Butterfly in May. Thinking about going..... Thinking about arranging my whole life to follow her performances actually!
@@Culture_maven She’s debuting in that production??? I saw that production in Vienna last summer, and was thinking about catching it again at the Met in May. If she’s singing Butterfly, I’m booking immediately. Thanks for the heads up! (It’s a GORGEOUS production.)

Oh THANK YOU! for putting this up. I was at this performance in Salzburg and I still can't get over it. Completely overwhelmed. Asmik is a stage animal like no other singer I've seen. I could go on and on about how wonderful this was but am basically lost for words.
Trully welcome! Also saw it in Salzburg, felt the same, completely overwhelmed, no words, only tears!! Only great artists like Asmik can transmit those emotions in the audience.
@@ebencook5672 Absolutely. I sat between the music critics for the London Times (Fisher) and a German MEP (typical large macho German guy). We were all sniveling at the end. Best singing actress since Callas.

Oh my God. What an amazing voice. I've seen so many people do this roles where either everything's great but the high notes are thin, or the voice is too heavy to mobilize up to all those Bs and Cs at the end...or the singing is ok but the acting is not, or the acting is good but the voice is too light...Asmik has all of the weight, the flexibility, the resonance AND the acting chops. The way she sits in the chair and looks over at the herbs...I'm just blown away by this.

Well sung but did she poison herself or what? seems she took out her own eyes with the Sissors? then how did she see the child - I felt it was emotionally unsatisfying - a catharsis requires a bit more than that ending delivered.
I was a little confused by that too...but in the original libretto, the "miracle" is basically her hallucinating (she sees a vision of The Virgin Mary presenting her son to her) which may have been brought on by the poison. I'm guessing that's sort of what happened here. The scissors might have been the director's way of saying "OK the vision-via-poison might not be clear enough here so let's give her some additional way for her to imagine seeing something that's not actually there".
XVII secolo....difficile accettare una trasposizione scenica per un capolavoro assoluto incentrato sul dramma di una madre di un figlio illegittimo finita in clausura...peccato perché una gran bella edizione con ottima direzione e altrettanto brava la protagonista ... basta mettere due quinte e un fondale e il resto viene da solo, basta lasciare fare a Puccini...
Sorry folks Scotto owns this role followed by Sutherland's recording. And I'll add Sill's performance with NYC Opera the "night" before she put her OWN son into an institution. Angelica is heart wrenching for sure...I have directed it.
Mush mouth Sutherland’s recording is barely listenable as she squeaks through whole opera. It’s not even remotely comprable with Asmik’s near perfect performance in Salzburg.
Astounding performance!! W hat a major talent! Stunning vocals matched with dramatic acting skills!! Puccini would be impressed ! Brava Asmik!!

I LOVED directing Angelica too. I agree that Scotto and Sutherland will never be forgotten for their Angelicas.... Grigorian, I felt, blended all of the demanding singing with opera acting such as I've never seen before. Her voice is definitely lyric but she was able to utilize her formant to its most resonant, and used every bit of her facial muscles to hone and perfect each tone... It's great though that we will always have our favorites and it's all open to interpretation.

Dear Asmik, the idea is wonderful to make her a woman again and no longer a nun in the finale, but the theatrical timing... sorry Franz but the music is too fast... but the drama in this case is more important...😘

The directing and staging is not her choice. Likely she had a great deal of say in the tempi; I disagree and felt the tempo was ideal. Even stretched out for some of the vocals which surely were taxing.
