- Visit Union Station's Summer Train Fest 2017 event in Los Angeles with the 'Big Engineer,' a perfect day for a railfan! You can even get there riding the LA Metro!
The Santa Fe 3751 was under steam. It's a huge 4-8-4 steam locomotive from 1927, and can go over 100 mph! The Santa Fe 3751 was present when Union Station first opened in 1939; it pulled the very first passenger train into Union Station Los Angeles!
Big Engineer got to operate a real HO scale model train set for the first time, thanks to the Pasadena Model Railroad Club.
Metrolink had one of their new Tier 4 EMD F125 clean diesel locomotives on display, number 911. These new 4-axel locomotives have a 4,700 hp V20 engine and can go up to 125 mph while pulling 10 passenger cars.
There were also a variety of railway passenger cars to explore, including Amtrak business class and dining/cafe cars and the 'Tioga Pass,' a private car from 1959 for business executives, classic Pullman cars, and others from LA Rail's fleet of Amtrak-approved vintage passenger cars from the 1940's and 50's.
Operation Lifesaver was there, along with lots of food trucks, vendors, and there was even a Kids Zone to play in!
