    THIS STORY:
    Marion A. Eichholz was the last known survivor of the 1915 Eastland disaster. On July 24, 1915, Marion and her parents were on the upper deck of the SS Eastland when it listed, then rolled on it's side killing 844 passengers.
    MUSIC:
    The famous recording played in this episode; "Nearer My God To Thee", can be heard in countless similar renditions in memory of the RMS Titanic. This was the last song played by the ship's band. This recording in an anonymous contribution.
    THIS CHANNEL:
    _________________________________________________________
    The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
    IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
    This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
    Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
    Some are famous.
    And some infamous....
    ....and some with tragic endings.

    I’ve been looking forward to this episode. I love to hear the accounts of people who lived during this time and what happened to them. Marion and her family must’ve relied heavily on their faith in the aftermath . How touching that she was buried with the Bible a suitor gave her.

      This is very poignant. Marion reminds me a bit of my great Aunt Jeannette who remained unmarried after her parents refused to grant their permission for her to marry her sweetheart, who was Catholic ( her parents were strict Presbyterians ).Of course, this was some time ago as I am now in my 70s and she has been deceased many years past. She took an interest in me as a child and took me to museums, historical sites and the annual family reunions back then. Marion sounded like she is was bright and full of life like Aunt Jeannette was. May all these family members rest in in peace.

      I was thinking about a coworker and friend recently. He’d passed about 4 years ago. I called his widow to say, I was thinking about Ron today. (This or that) reminds me of him. And actually think of him fairly often. She was so glad to hear this, it made her day. She said her worst worries are that people will forget about Ron.

    I noticed that both girls' last names did not change. They chose to remain single. I can understand how she felt that guy was probably her Mr. Right and she got her heart broken once and didn't want to go through that again while not ever getting over the love she had for him. That can make a person choose the single life.
    So amazing that the Mom and Marion were able to escape that tragic ship disaster and that Marion lived to be the last remaining survivor and lived a full life to 102! Wow.
    Great documentation of the events, and the life she lived. Great collaboration! Thank you for telling about this family.

    A great story, very sad and poignant. You wouldn't think a leisure cruise boat would over book so many people! That. seems so irresponsible! However, things were far different back then. I'm glad you covered Marion and Iris's story. I wonder why? he didn't go back for his wife? That's a mystery that will probably never be answered. It's very odd...he told her to stay on the deck as long as she could....you'd think he said that so he'd know where to find her. Obviously he had no intention to go back, but why? He meant for her to stay on deck hoping she'd be rescued? Just a very odd way for a man to behave. It really makes you wonder?

    • @jflan92
      @jflan92 Год назад +3

      I think Mr Eichholz must have suffered from emotional & psychological trauma resulting from shock which might have affected his mind and behaviour after the disaster. Pity he & his eldest daughter Marion didn't get medical attention as both of them should have nor did they get counselling on how to deal with the traumatic effects because in 1916, if you survived and considered to be mentally & physically fine afterwards then there was no need for getting immediate medical attention as you were simply told to get over & move on as best as possible afterwards. I know this sounds shocking but this was the kind of ignorant attitude which prevailed back around that time. Quite sad, really.

      @@kayevans2964 I don't understand myself. Perhaps he was afraid for Marion being that she was wet and it was so cold. Or like others said, he might have thought someone would rescue her. I would imagine he didn't want to leave his 3 year old daughter standing alone while he jumped back in to rescue his wife especially with the chaos going on. You sort of have to question her actual memory of the event being she was only 3 years old. Perhaps she remembered bits and pieces well but other parts not so well. The Eastland Disaster was unusual in that it wasn't the result of a collision, a fire on board, getting hit by a torpedo, or hazardous weather conditions. The ship didn't even make it out of the dock before capsizing, which makes it such a bizarre and heartbreaking tragedy. It's also amazing that this one particular family survived, AND the parents were able to have another child the following year. As for why the father didn't go back to rescue his wife, it's still pretty puzzling, even though the guy was obviously in a state of shock at the moment. Maybe he thought that it would be easier to swim with the child to safety first, and then go back for his wife, but it's still strange that he didn't. Maybe he figured that she was in a safe place on the dock and that the ship wasn't going to sink any further, but still, it was a strange thing for him to go home and change into dry clothes with his wife still on board the ship. We'll probably never know why he did exactly what he did -- but it's still a miracle that both parents survived, and the child wasn't left an orphan, as some children who survived this tragedy were. Marion lived a long, full life, and no doubt she witnessed a lot, including the Great Depression and WW2 when she was still a fairly young woman. RIP to this incredible woman, and the victims of the Eastland Disaster!

    What a full life she had, strange that the father didn't go back for the mother, wow, surely he had his reasons.... Thanks for the story and the walk.

    I'm confused. You said a daughter's name was Shirley, but the grave of the two daughters was Marion and Iris. Where is Shirley, and why isn't she buried with her family?

    • @FacesoftheForgotten
      @FacesoftheForgotten  Год назад +7

      Shirley is buried elsewhere, yes there were three sisters. Not sure why she is buried elsewhere probably got married had a family and guessing that’s where her husband is from.

    The date on Iris's grave stone is wrong. 1916? When the tragidy happened in 1915? But both go really old. Iris 98 and Marion 102, wow.
